Title: Good SEGA Genesis Games?
Post by: Polpolion on September 18, 2010, 04:33:43 pm
I just bought a Genesis off of Amazon for $20, what are some good games other than the Sonic games and Streets of Rage?

I doubt the mileage would be universal, but my brother and I managed to get endless fun out of a yard-sale copy of NHL '98. :p

The thing about the megadrive was that it had a LOT of fun 2-player games:

EA Hockey was great; BODY CHECK B*****S!!!

Micro machines (All of them) are great fun.

Streets of Rage 2 was awesome; 1 and 3 were a bit crap IMHO.

World of Illusion was surprisingly fun despite being a Disney game ;)

Single player platform game of note include Taz, Quack Shot, Chuck Rock (I always loved the intro music ) all fun platformers but are beaten by Earthworm Jim 1 and 2; They're he ones to get if you can!
Rocket Knight Adventures and Sparkster (RKA2) are also excellent, although the SNES versions benefited from the extra buttons.

If you can find a copy of Zero the Kamikaze Squirrel, that's a great and very underrated platform-beat-em-up

JRPGs, the only two I remember being any good were the Shining Force and Phantasy Star series, but I don't think I ever completed them (Weren't a patch on the SNES' Chrono Trigger.)

Jungle Strike and Desert Strike are megadrive classics too, but avoid Urban Strike, which was pants.

Ecco the Dolphin was a beautiful game but HARD AS F*****G NAILS. I blame it for my dislike of dolphins. I never played 2 because was traumatized by 1 (The whole game is pure evil but the last level is PURE EVIL ON A STICK MADE OF EVIL WITH A COATING OF EVIL SAUCE* (*made of evil))

For beat-em-ups, I will say the Mortal Kombat series was much better on the megadrive than Street Fighter. The SNES had the better Street Fighter conversions.

But I will say this: If you buy nothing else, the one game you *HAVE* TO GET is Gunstar Heros.
It is bar none the best run-and-gun shooter ever made! And it's *two* player!!!

Rocket Knight Adventures, a definite must.

Herzog Zwei, THE first RTS on the planet. . **** dune.

Cyborg justice.

Strider,

Contra,

Warpspeed,

The Earthworm Jims,

Dynamite heady,

Ristar,

Bubsy was crap. Avoid like the plague.

Shining force, like a medieval Fallout combo RPG.

Gunstar heroes is A MUST BUY. I got it on a combo cart with flicky and some other crap on it I never play, it cost me sixty quid back in the late 90's. I paid that much for it because it's THAT worth it. Especially the boardgame level.

Altered beast is a learning curve everyone should go through.

Also if you have to beg, borrow, cheat, steal, kill and kidnap to obtain them, GET THE SPLATTERHOUSE SERIES!

Third one made me physically sick in my youth. Converter may be needed.

Also mega bomberman for the little kangaroos called joeys ;)

Bubsy was awesome, Ignore these naysayers! It was hard as hell, but the level design was a blast, and there were so many locations to explore. The instant deaths suck, but damn, that game was totally worth the challenge!

Oh,
And my recommendation list (based on my childhood memories, not actual critic opinions):

True Lies

Zombies Ate my Neighbors

World Series '95

James Pond's Aquatics Games (I liked it and liked it a lot)

Lemmings

Aladdin (another great disney game)

Road Rash
Road Rash II

(Road Rash III sucked)

Super Hang-On

Moto GP

Desert Strike (****ing awesome)

Woah there, let's not suggest something he might regret. He might like to keep his controllers intact (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=idZ9C0Qtj2A).  :P

Oooh yeah, General Chaos was quite fun too.

Alien Storm was another game run and gun that was quite fun :)

Didn't like Lemmings; Don't know how anyone could play that game with a pad - Mouse FTW! The Amiga version was way better anyway. Heck, even the PC version was better! Mooouse!!

Have you bought Gunstar Heros yet?????? :P ;)
