Hi All,
First post on the fourm! I got Freespace 1 and 2 off GoG. Really having a great time with Freespace 1, so far. However, I'm having a little bother on one mission. I have to disable the Tarrans so the Orion ships can capture it. The first time I tried the mission I died as the Orion ship were calling in a freighter to tow it.
Since that I have played the mission several times; despite disabling the Tarrans and destroying all the other ships, the Orion ships do not warp in! Am I doing something wrong? Or do they take X amount of time to arrive, no matter how quick you disable the Tarrans?
Cheers.

First off
:welcome:
Secondly, why don't you use the fsport? FS1 with up to date graphics and a few bug fixes too.
-
Few things.
1) Use FSPort unless you really really like FS1.
2) You have to disable it AND destroy all its turrets as well. If the IFF doesn't go green, it ain't gonna happen.
3) It's called Taranis.
-
4) They're not Orions. They're designated as OMEGA 1 and 2 (and the ship class is Elysium).
5) Moved, as this is more of a support thing. Not that anyone seems to care anymore.
If the IFF doesn't go green, it ain't gonna happen.
Goes "neutral" or whatever first.
-
Really? Never noticed that in the original FS1.
-
Hmm. Well, in FSPort it does that. Played the very mission a few days ago. But I admit to being very much uncertain about FS1.
-
Yeah, I copped on that I had to take out the guns, ect. Pain though, as they are hard to see in the low quilty graphics.
Speaking of that, what is fsport? I thought the graphics udate was only for Freespace 2?
-

No. If you get FreeSpace Open you can play FreeSpace 1, ported to FreeSpace 2, using all the graphical upgrades. The graphical upgrades (MediaVPs) also apply to almost all user-made campaigns like Silent Threat Reborn, Derelict, Transcend, and Blue Planet.
-
Oh ok. But, have you got a link, or a guide to install it? Sounds really hard....
-
Do you have freespace 2 already installed? have you installed the SCP and mediavps? if you have you're most of the way there.
-
Oh ok. But, have you got a link, or a guide to install it? Sounds really hard....
It's not.
Figure out where your FreeSpace 2 install is. If it's not already there, move it to C:\Games\FreeSpace2 (for convenience.)
Look at the top bar of this website and click 'FreeSpace Open Installer'.
If you have any trouble past there, we'll help you out.

Ok, thanks for the info guys. I hope you can give me more help?
I installed FOS. I think it worked cause the load screen said it was the mod, but the menus are all weird cause I use 1440x900, even though thats what I set the resolution to. For that reason I could not select the "accept" mission button, it was off screen. How can I fix this?
Also, some one mentioned that FOS would give Freespace one better graphics, how is this done?
Sorry if I'm a pain, but I'm a total noob at modding!
-
Please follow these install instructions to the letter: http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=61606.0
In addition, please visit the FSO FAQ found here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=56279.0), and post an fs2_open.log.
-
You know, I'm not a fan of members telling newcomers, "Don't play FS1, go straight to FSPort and play that instead". First of all, if it weren't for FS1, we wouldn't have the FSPort. Second of all, playing FS1 is worth it if only for the atmosphere and nostalgia factor. Third of all, playing FS1 first helps the player better appreciate the enhancements that went into FSPort and the mediavps.
-
Hi Joe,
I´d remember on Vanilla FS1 and FSport no Orion Destroyer is acting during mission I disable and disarm the Taranis.
2 Elysium transporters, named as Omega 1 and Omega 2,are calling the Haulkins freihgter to tow the Taranis to Tombough station on Ribos system.
And what happens to the Taranis on Ribos is a short article in Freespace maincampain only.
Also, some one mentioned that FOS would give Freespace one better graphics, how is this done?
This will be realized with fsport_mediasvps,FSport and the FSO engine.

Haulkins... freihgter... Tombough
Halkins. Freighter. Tombaugh.

Thanks for the info so far guys!
However, I have been unable to adress my issues on my own.
The main one, when I try to play with the MediaVPs 3.6.12 is that the menus will not show up right in my 1440x900 screen. I have set this resolution in the launcher. I can not progress past the briefing screens as the icon to accept the mission is off screen.
As for running fsport, I'm not sure which mod to select, I assume it is the Fsport MediaVPs V3.2? When running that mod, things look good; in the ship info section the ships clearly have new shiny graphics. However, when I try and start a campain, I get the following Warnings- "Invalid Type Subach HL-7" and "Unable to find weapons list". Strangely, if I ignore these warnings the brefing screen is the exact same as when running the MediaVPs 3.6.12 mod, I thought that Fsport was the Frespace1 game with better graphics?
Anyhow, sorry if I'm being a pain, I hope you can help though...

In addition to selecting FSPort (or FSPort MediaVPs) as a mod, you must also go to the Campaign Room in the game and select the FS1 campaign instead of the FS2 campaign. Trying to play the FS2 campaign with FSPort just ends up with something horrible happening.

Found root pack 'C:\games\Freespace 2\fsport\odeon_fs1.vp' with a checksum of 0x6b0eb146
What's this? This should likely be in a mod directory of its own... or at least I don't recall ever seeing it with FSPort.
EDIT: Nevermind, cutscene pack.
Initializing OpenGL graphics device at 1280x1024 with 32-bit color...
...and this tells that your FS2_Open is configured to run at 1280x1024 resolution instead of your monitor's native resolution. Could you check what version of the Launcher are you using, and also what Windows version are you using? Re-check that the Launcher's video tab really says 1440x900 when you start it. If it doesn't, it's possible that Windows UAC is preventing the program to actually save the changed resolution to the registry entry. You could try running the Launcher once as an admin, set the resolution to what you need it to be, click Apply, exit and re-start as regular user.
If this doesn't help you can always force the native resolution on command line by manually typing -res 1440x900 to the Custom flags field, but it'd be obviously better if the Launcher worked as it should.
FSPort is basically FreeSpace campaign (ships and missions) ported to FS2 engine. For the most part, it doesn't change the interface files, so they still look like FS2. This is one of the points that Goober5000 referred to - it's not quite the same as FS1, in many subtle ways. The story is same, and gameplay shouldn't be radically different, and personally I find the better in-game quality good enough offset for the different interface.

Ok, so a couple of things here....
@Jeff Vader, if I run FSport, when I go to the campagin room, I only see an option to play the Freespace2 campagin....
@Herra Tohtori, is the 5.5f launcher. I'm running Vista. It is like the screen has been pulled down and to the right.
I'm really thankful to you guys for trying to help me.
Edit; @ Herra Tohtori, I went back into the my FS2_Open, it is now set at 1440x900. However, even when running with no mods the desplay ius still off.
-

As Herra Tohtori explained, the game states that you're running at 1280x1024. And your monitor's resolution is 1440x900. You can see that the vertical resolution used by the game exceeds that of your monitor -> **** happens. Try HT's suggestions. They should correct it.

:wtf: Screenshots or it didn't happen. If you've selected the mods the way your fs2_open.log states, there should definitely be a "FreeSpace: The Great War" campaign in the campaign room. Accompanied by Silent Threat and Operation Templar. I'll show my own screenshots in a minute to make the point.
Also, please remember to create a NEW PILOT for each mod. FSPort is a mod.
Edit: The flight deck as seen when FSPort is active. (http://koti.mbnet.fi/reiler/FunkyFreeSpaceStuff/fsport1.png) The red rectangle is placed around the Campaign room doors.

Ah, you were right, I was looking in the wrong area! :nervous: Still though, I get the Warrning "Invalid type Subach HL-7" when trying to run the Freespace: The Great War.
New fs2_open attached.

Well, yes, because you haven't selected the FSPort campaign in the campaign room. Without doing that, the game will try to load the FS2 campaign, and naturally run into problems.

Well, I did the last time and still got the "Subach HL-7" warning. I think though, because I cannot see/select the bottom right of the screen I have to hit esc to get back to the main menu, therefore, the FSPort campaign is only highlighted, but never selected, as such.
-
Okay, here's somehing to try. Open the Launcher, go to the features tab, and select "Use fullscreen window" from the Dev Tools list. If you still get the "oversized screen" error, use a smaller resolution like 1024x768.
-
BOOM!!!!
I tried your idea, and it worked! I was able to run it at 1024x768 in a window. Not ideal, but still, better then nothing. That got me thinking though. I wnet to my desktop and turned it down from 32bit to 16bit......BOOM! Its running at 1440x900 in full screen! Wow! It is some change from the graphics before!
Thanks to everone for helping me in this thread.
Also, thanks to all the people who made tha mod!
Hugs all round!
-
You need a better graphics card then.

This is curious, because your GPU should definitely be able to run the game in 32bit colour, and moreover the debug log said all the time that the game used 32bit colour (same as desktop). By your account, now the desktop is 16-bit and the game 32-bit, which is not how things are supposed to be set up.
I wouldn't consider the issue "fixed" until everything works properly. As a default, you should be running desktop at 32bit and the game at 32bit.
-
Maybe its a driver bug. Update your drivers.
-
Update!
It looks like you guys were right, all is not sorted. Things were going fine, I played through many mission and was having a great time. I got as far as the mission where I have to fly the SF Dragon through the Shivan patrols so I can scan their freighters.
Upon loading this mission the game crashes. I have noted the when, on the top left, it says it is loading "modle load gun platfromo3.pdf" I get a warning noise and the desktop cursor appears on screen, if I hit enter the game continues to load. Then as the game tries to load "modle load support02.pdf" I get an error noise, again the desktop cursor appears, when I hit enter this time the game crashes.
There is no message other then the standerd Windows report one.
My GPU drivers were uptodate, I have since reinstalled them, just to be sure. No effect.
fs2_log is attached.
I hope you guys can help me out again :)

This looks like a completely different issue. Skilled professionals have been dispatched to the crash site.
On a note related to previous problem and how you solved it - are you still running Windows desktop at 16-bit colour or 32-bit colour? This doesn't have anything to do with the new problem, but running desktop at 16bit and game at 32bit is not the way it's supposed to be done, so please clarify what the current settings are.
Running the desktop at 16-bit will result in significant loss of colour depth and subsequently visual quality of the desktop environment, which includes all things done on the OS (web browsing, image editing, videos etc.)...

Great, hope they get here soon; I was wanting to play a little tonight, after college.
I'm still running it with my desktop at the 16bit and the game at 32bit. I never really thought of it as a big deal, just something to get the game to work. I always saw it more as a wide screen issue, as apposed to a GPU one. I have had to do it with several games, BioShock1, BBC:2, IL2, Fallout1, to name just a few. When I have encountered the problem I have turned the desktop down to 16bit, when I wanted to play the game, after I'm done, I but it back up to 32bit.
I never really found out why, I mean, my rig is far from top end (it is 2 and a half years old) but its OK. I have been able to run all the games mentioned on full graphics. I fact I can still run new games on full graphics, Mafia II, for example.

Anyone?? Please guys, if you can, I was having a great time with this game.

Please unpack the attached archive into fsport_mediavps\data\models.

Please unpack the attached archive into fsport_mediavps\data\models.
Thanks The E. Still no joy though. When I went to c\games\freespace2\fsport-mediavps/date, I have no models folder, only a folder called cache and a text doc called multi. I put the support02.pof file in cache first, when that had no effect I created a model folder and put it in it, still on effect.
I hit esc instead of enter when I got the warning as it was trying to load "model load gun platform03.pdf" this time. I got the following:

Can you try playing with a regular build? Or does that crash for you?
Not quite sure what you mean by "regular build", but, if you mean FSport v3.2, then yes, I can play the mission fine.
-
There are two kinds of builds for FSO. Debug builds, which generate logs, and regular builds, which are meant for playing. They can be distinguished by their filenames, regular builds are named (for example) fs2_open_3_6_12r_INF_SSE2.exe, while debug builds have a "d" in place of the "r". Unless you are modding or bughunting, you should stick to regular builds.
-
I think the debug build name format should be changed to DEBUG(rest as before). :nervous:
-
I don't think there is enough room in the file name for DEBUG. Remember 31 character limit and I think that goes for exes as well.
-
I don't think there is enough room in the file name for DEBUG. Remember 31 character limit and I think that goes for exes as well.
GRUMP.
Maybe once we get INF pulled from the filenames?
-
Ok....does that mean that I was using the wrong build? Is that why the game was crashing? What build should I use If I want to us FSport? I was using FSport mediaVPs V3.2
Also, could I use FSport for this mission, and then switch back to FSport mediaVPs V3.2 for the rest of the game?
-
Debug builds should only be used if the regular build keeps crashing, and you need to find out why.
And yes, you can do that.
-
I don't think there is enough room in the file name for DEBUG. Remember 31 character limit and I think that goes for exes as well.
The 31 character limit applies only to files loaded by the game. (And I think it further applies only to files stored in .vps.) I'm pretty sure the game won't try to load its own executable, so a long file name should be safe.
-
Indeed it should.
-
Thanks for aqll the help guys, I got past that mission and started using FSport mediaVPs V3.2 again. I still get the odd warning here and there, but the game plays and looks fine. :P
