Title: Fun in FRED2 and "The Babylon Project" 2
Post by: Vertigo1 on April 27, 2002, 01:35:31 pm
Since my previous thread "mysteriously disappeared" for 'unknown reasons', I'm reposting this.

Screenshot#2 (http://vertigo1-2.freeyellow.com/FunFS2_01.jpg)

I got bored with the demo ships in The Babylon Project so I decided to have a little fun.  I decided to add some FS2 ships into the fray and see how they'd handle themselves against the EA and Minbari. :)  I altered the ships (except for the EA vessels) so that every turret had a beam cannon of some sort.  I decided to even things up on the GTVA side by reducing the timewait count for the beam cannons so that they'd have a chance against the Minbari.

It eventually led upto having 60 fighters and ~a dozen capital ships duking it out.  I even modified the Orion station so that it has Minbari fusion cannons and fusion AAA. :D  Needless to say, it can adequately defend itself. :p  Its actually a challenge to destroy this time. :)

As for the added ships, I brought in the GTD Orion, GTD Hades, and a Sobek. :D  Mainly cuz those are my favorite ships.  I might even port over every FS2 ship, slap them all into one big arena and let em have at it....just to see what'd happen.

To really sum it up, this sucker actually stresses my Duron 700 and Geforce3. :D

If you wanna try it, bug me on ICQ.  Just bear in mind that I am an uber Fred2 newbie so don't expect stuff like dialouge cuz all I really know how to do is make ships fire beams and how to make them warp in when something happens to a ship.

btw, what you see in the screenshots isn't even half of what's going on at that time.

[P1mping]If you have not downloaded and played The Babylon Project yet, you can grab the core files from here. (http://koti.mbnet.fi/~fury/tbp/) [/P1mping]

TBP Core is 58.7 MB, install it first.
TBP Core patch is 5.1 MB, install it after the core.

You have to download animations, musics and hi-res packages from somewhere else, I don't have enough space to put them all online. :sigh:

I downloaded the full pack (eventually) when it was released at the start.  Problem was the pack only had a few Earth and Mimbari ships.

I don't have the "patch" yet or any new ships....

Well according to the TBP site (before VW died), there was going to be another release pretty soon.

It was a DEMO!

There is no new ships from TBP team until release 2 is released.
For further information about TBP, see my signature.
(note: Volition Watch server is currently down)

Will release 2 include all the ships from release 1 AND the new ones or will it be a case of cutting and pasting entries in the ships.tbl?

Of course not...you'll get those exe files again...just click on them and you should have new ships, sounds, music, missions, etc.

Ok, what size am I looking at for the release 2 bearng in mind I already have the core files etc from the first release?

Need to know cos I only have a 56k modem and can't spend all my time downloading a 100MB + mod etc.

I don't know how that will be handled this time. I guess we make one more big package that contains release 1 and 2...but again different update packs for the people who already have R1...the core files will contain the ships, missions, sounds and voices again. But anis and music update will come seperately. As I said I don't know for sure....wait until IceFire checks here....he's in command.

I can't say anything about the file size now...but definately not a small 5 meg thing ;)

We'll probably provide an all in one download pack along with updates for what we already have provided you with.

There is a music update, new sounds and effects.  The core will once again be models and textures and so on...but you already have all of the interface materials so the update will be smaller than the core that you've already downloaded.  And sounds won't be getting too much bigger in any of the releases because you already have most of the major sounds (we're just adding a few guns in the next releases so thats miniscule compaired to the entire sound environment that you've already gotten).

Rest assured, we'll have different options.

And with the source code out, we can now have even cooler battles.

MAX beams giving fire is 40 at any one time. Tweaking that a bit, but I don’t think i ever saw more than 12-15 beams giving fire at the same time, in somewhat normal scenarios

But i did however load up an sathana vs. sathana with all out beams and put in repeat counts for all turrets to fire at the same time, and noticed that not all weapons where giving fire. Now I know the reason. MAX_BEAMS 40.

I understand, but you don't understand what I meant.

Yes, the campaign was a demo, so was the release itself more or less. R1 will be always just a demo in my eyes, whatever you say.

R2 is much more closer what we and fans does want from the TBP than R1 "demo" is.

BS, neither you or me is right or wrong, it is a matter of own opinion.
