Title: About using tiny text in posts
Post by: Redstreblo on October 03, 2010, 01:25:17 pm
I have noticed a lot of people posting a reply to a topic and inserting 1pt text after their main reply. The only way that I know of to read this text is to copy paste it into a text editing program and increase its size there. This slows down the speed that I can read the post significantly and it is getting on my nerves. I know that I don't have to read it, but I do because I don't want to miss out on what they say (By reading the small text in a post I learned somebody was working on a campaign that might have interfered with Vasudan Imperium, for example).

What I would like to know is why make it this small? Subscript works just fine and can be read easily. Why post something and give people a hard time? Why not say what you wanna say or just not say it at all? In the middle of a conversation would you suddenly start to whisper so that people can not hear what you said?

Who else is fed up with this? Am I the only one who thinks this is very childish?

I tend not to see many forumites do it, and it's usually put in as a footnote or something along those lines, so I don't think it's so bad.

Yes.

Can't believe I'm explaining this, but: it's used as a way to explain a joke or point out sarcasm without instantly giving it away. You can simply hit 'quote' on the post to read it. When trolling or playing a prank, it's a good way to make it clear that you don't really mean it.

Get used to it, get to love it.

Last I checked, you couldn't quote in a locked thread.

I mean we can't. You can cause you're a mod.

Last I checked, you couldn't quote in a locked thread.

Well that's a special case! And what you can do is just highlight it and paste it into your browser's address bar.

Oh and for RedStreblo:

Quote
(By reading the small text in a post I learned somebody was working on a campaign that might have interfered with Vasudan Imperium, for example)

User-made campaigns don't need to be canon to each other, so that doesn't matter. Just keep on rollin'.

OMG Copying and Pasting into the address bar or quick reply area is SO ****ING HARD.

When I thought that the only way to read it was to paste it into a text editor, increase the size, and change the color, yeah I would have said it was way too inconvenient.
But they I learned to just paste it into the address bar like everyone suggests. As long as you don't hit 'enter' you should be fine, and now I enjoy it!

Yea I never actually thought about using the address bar or the quick reply (which I just turned on in the options), but now I can try it out to see if this improves anything.

I still have to stop what I am doing to read small text however, so I doubt that this time saver will change my opinion.

If you're using Firefox you can set a minimum font size for web pages. I'm pretty sure most other browsers do, or have a plugin/extension to do, the same thing. No c&p or griping necessary.

Then GTFO.

I've never had much of a problem with it, since highlighting stuff makes it show up in my google search bar (on IE).

redstreblo, I'm sorry to say this, but the small text thing, while maybe annoying, is part of the posting culture here. Get used to it, or ignore it, but complaining about it will only lead to sarcasm.

Don't you attempt to obfuscate the truth with false pretenses of humor!  You're skills at dissembling do not work on me, I see through your trickery.  Its quite obvious it's all part of you clever plan to make people squint at their computer screens.  Only the most wicked and perverse villains would perpetrate so vile an act.  But alas you gleeful revel in such foul delights, seeding the entire board with your awful cat's paws!  Admit it you scurrilous knave!

Well, I.... don't know.
I guess sometimes it gets annoying, but only with very small fonts that can't be read directly, I've used the font size option myself in the past so I vote for the third option, also thanks for adding snuffy to the poll.

I use it, but not often. Usually it's some snide comment or off-topic crap. Copy & paste the text into the address bar or search bar. Or stick it into notepad.

I happen to agree with Redstreblo here.  Tiny text is okay if it's still readable; you can do tiny text down to about 6pt or so and it'll remain legible.  But any smaller font will force the reader to do the copy & paste trick, which gets really annoying if it happens multiple times in one thread.

How hard would it be to set a minimum font size?
Title: Re: About using tiny text in posts
Post by: Goober5000 on October 04, 2010, 03:49:26 am
I wondered that myself, and now I'm officially annoyed enough to do something about it.

The bbcode has a built-in "validate" function that allows you to preprocess the parameter before using it.  So all I need to do is create a PHP function to separate the font number from the 'pt' suffix, clamp it to a certain range, and then reassemble it.

Unfortunately I'm too tired at the moment to figure out the PHP I'll need to do it.  In the morning...

Hey, I'm not tying to be one. Usually it helps to bring these things to the moderators attention though. I did post a poll and tried to get a general consensus from everybody to see if it was just me. Sometimes a few people get annoyed by it but don't complain about it. When somebody does (me in this case) it prompts discussion which goes to try and make this site a better place to be (not that there is much wrong with it, just little nitpicks like this).

I still don't see how this thread has gone on for three pages and the obvious solution has only been addressed in a few posts: minimum font size. Pretty much any modern browser supports a minimum font size option, negating any effects of tiny font in the first place, and if your browser doesn't support it you probably need to get a real browser anyway.

Text sizes: I can read size 04 until it becomes too pixellated...but I don't mind small text, unless everyone started doing it a lot more often, i.e. the amount in this thread is too much... ;) Big text sucks because other people around you can read it!

Size 12             Size 10

Size 08               Size 06

Size 05               Size 04

Size 03
Size 02
Size 01

I think the minimum font size option in the browser is probably the best solution - let those who want small text have it, while the others can have it at a readable size...I just tried it, it took 15 seconds in FF and works like a charm (except Snail's post)

I have a weird habit of highlighting everything I read. I think it comes from reading things at work and needing to sound like I'm working  :nervous:
So that's 1/3 of the work done already.
So things like this will completely visible. To me and other obsessive-compulsives. And those who figured there would naturally something here. This works better for really hiding junk

i dont really see what the point is to posting in very small text. i mean it doesnt make any sense at all. it seems like its something some internet troll would do to piss people off, or maybe some lame passive agressive way to make your self look cooler than you are. perhaps you are compensating for your excessively large penis thats always tearing holes in your jeans. i generally dispise 99% of what the people on the internet do, seriously people grow up. stop acting like a total emo douche and post in normal size characters. AT LEAST YOUR NOT TALKING IN CAPITOL LETTERS LIKE BILLY MAZE BECAUSE THAT IS REALLY LAME. YOU ARE NOT BILLY MAZE, YOUVE PROBIBLY NEVER SNORTED COCAIN IN YOUR LIFE. YOURE NOTHING BUT A BIG WUSS. maybe youre trying to hide how lame you really are, posting things you barely even admit to your self in little letters so peoplee can ignore them. you people need to get laid if all you do is type in little bitty letters. but of course nobody wants to **** you because youre lame. NOT AS LAME AS YOU BILLY MAZE WANABEES WHO WILL NEVER SNORT COCAINE IN YOUR LIFE AND YOU HAVE A TINY PENIS!. but youre still lame. i hope you get aids, even though thats impossible since you will never ever get laid. maybe you will try to cut your self with a dirty knife that has some other emo's aids blood on it and you will get aids too, then you will use the fact that you have aids to try to convince people youre not a virgin. youre so lame. maybe you will just need blood and they will give you aids blood because  they dont want to was non aids blood on your pathetic ass. i bet you couldnt even get laid in prison. the should lock you up to remove you from the gene pool, not that you will ever get the chance to reproduce. but we dont want you raping a squirrel because the offspring would be half squirrel half lame retards who run around in circles and chew on their own nuts. not that you have any nuts to speek of. youre so lame. i hope you die. wait what was this post about i forget, oh well im sure there was a ****ing point. maybe i just felt like being a troll. if youre still reading this you really need to get a ****ing life. it is obviouse that i am just being a douche and posting a bunch of random crap that doesnt even need to be posted but because the letters are so small they will need to be a lot of them for it even to look like anything was posted. its ok im allowed to post small because im a hypocrite, so that makes it ok. oh and ime not even gonna bother to spellcheck this because im evil and i got better things to do than to bull**** on the internet. oh yea, you people who post small are lame.

so whats the upper limit on font size?
