Hi all,
Not sure if this is an issue at all but thought ill ask the question,
been a while since i played blue planet so i installed freespace last night and ran the updater for 3.6.12.
Everything ran fine and blue planet and war in heaven works fine too, but i realised that the star map looks a bit odd.
There is like a thousand stars in the background both AoA and War in Heaven missions, which i dont remember seeing when i was playing AoA about a year ago. is this something normal or is there something wrong?
I did a clean insall of Freespace and SCP so i dont have any of the old Media VPS files etc ... Despite this ive still DLall the latest media vps's and DL all the latest stuff i need from the site after the updater (just in case). Theres no errors at all and apart from the game and campaign runs fine. The other custom campaigns show normal amount of starts in the background, so i think its BP related only.
The funny thing is when i take as screen shot of it, and view it in windows, the screen shot shows a normal amount of stars in the background, pretty much the same amount of stars when i had a look at a few AoA gameplays on youtube. But when im acutally playing the game, the background is just littered with heaps of stars (when i mean heaps i mean like white dots clustered everwhere).
Thanks for the help!

I think the question here is do you enjoy this little "error" you have discovered. In Freespace, modders have the option to use a custom made 'skybox'. BP campaigns use a special skybox made just for BP, so if your experience was like mine it should be a good one.
EDIT: The maker of the BP skybox is "Herra Tohtori" if you are curious.
-
I think he means he's seeing an abnormal amount of stars...
Gamma settings maybe?
-
Yeah, I'm pretty sure he means an absurd/ugly number of extra stars. He did say that he went and watched gameplay vids that show the proper skybox (assuming that he didn't watch heavily compressed crap 360p youtube versions). Also, if the screenshot looks different from gameplay, something's up.
I dunno. I guess you could try posting a debug log. Not sure what that would show, but you haven't really given us much to go off of anyways.
-
Thanks for the quick responses guys,
Well the huge amount of stars is bearable.. but it looks out of place
I watched some of the cut scenes and gameplay on youtube on 1080p and they had much lesser stars (they look quite nice actually).
I thought id try to take some screen shots to show you guys but when i view the shots, they look normal (pretty much like the youtube clips) which is bloody wierd.
Played around with the gamma and detailed view settings in the game to no avail.
Best way i can describe it is imagine the normal starmaps in BP (as some of the star patterns look the same) and overlap the background a few times and you will have what i see in gameplay, an abnormal amount of stars.
give me 1 sec, ill post a debug
-
It's not supposed to look odd I guess, but it is definitely different from retail or SCP stars. The BP skybox reminds me of the time I went to the grand canyon on a clear night... just magnificent.
Yeah, I guess you are right. It's not supposed to be strange or anything, and certainly the gameplay vids are a good way to judge the standard. Maybe there is a graphics card/driver update issue? I should quit while I am ahead because I'm not very good in this department.

Debug log looks fine. Screenshots please. You may just be seeing HerraTohtori's 'realistic star count' Sol skybox, which is meant to reflect how the sky would actually look in space (sort of.)
-
It's not supposed to look odd I guess, but it is definitely different from retail or SCP stars.
I thout it could be my graphics too,
but everything is upto date and ive ran BP.AoA before (abt a year ago). The gameplay is brilliant, but have no idea what is up with it since i reinstalled freespace :(

attached are the screens zipped up.
The stars in the screenshots look alrite, but in gameplay they are alot brighter, and alot more and the stars are scatter more evenly instead of being clustered in patterns
I should add that the stars are exactly the same mission to mission.

Yeah, just based on the first screen shot that looks right. Doesn't that look cool? I think It does haha. That's kinda how space looks without the pesky atmosphere and civil lighting.
Anyways i'm pretty sure everything is working the way it should.
-
Yep, that's the normal Sol skybox. Painstakingly matched up to the exact constellations in that year, I might add!
-
Oh sweet then
thanks guys
I was just so used to all the nebula's and pretty colors that when i saw this many stars in BP, i wasnt sure if it was right.
Thanks for all the help

Didn't he just say that his gameplay looks different than his screenshots?
(I'm not quite sure he has his issue fixed yet)
-
There is no issue. It looks exactly like it should.
-

Yes the screenshot is different from game play, and it seems that the difference between the screenshot and gameplay is that the gameplay stars seem to be more intense and brighter, which could very well be why i see more stars in gameplay compared to the screenshot.
If the stars are supposed to look like that in the screenshot, then it could just be due to me my gamma settings.
The best way i can describe it is it reminds me of the old "star" screen saver on window 95, but if the screens look like im using the right visual and media files, then i guess there isnt much left i can do.
-
Maybe something to with your monitor?
-
How high is your -bloom_intensity?
-
Somehow I like this thread.
"Oh no, the skybox is full of stars... That's way to pretty, it MUST be a bug!"
Yeah, I know it wasn't exactly like that, still ;)
-

Best hidden insult ever! ;)

Hello xbladex4. As you've likely already found out, there are a lot of stars in that skybox indeed, and that's normal.
Whether or not it looks the same to you as it looks to me and others in this thread is not as simple a question to answer, however. Due to the nature of the skybox - lots and lots of dim stars - the display gamma settings can make a vast difference on how it actually looks when you see it on the monitor.
And I don't know if you guys forgot about this, but screenshots show the game as it's rendered, not how the display shows it. How the game looks on display is how a screenshot looks like - on the same display. In fact, looking at screenshots will always look the same as the game on your monitor. If xbladex4's display calibration is not set up right, there is no way at all that we could see that from screenshots. In fact if you have a good camera, you could go into the game, stop so that you only see immobile starfield (Shift+O disables the HUD, alt+pause lets you pause without the "pause" text shown on the display), then put your camera on a pedestal, adjust exposure time, take a "screenshot" without the flash, and post that to show how you actually see the monitor... however, you really need a pretty good camera and a dark room for this to be of any use. :p
The way I attempt to minimize the effects of gamma distortion on the graphics I make is that I calibrate my desktop gamma settings using these pages (http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/gamma_calibration.php) (most important ones are Contrast, Gamma calibration, Black level and White saturation images) so that the images rendered on the screen match the description on how they're supposed to look like.
Then, I always use -no_set_gamma option ("Disable setting of gamma" in "Troubleshooting" flag list on the Launcher) with FS2_Open. This means the game will use my desktop gamma settings instead of manipulating display gamma by itself.
Unfortunately, my display is by far not the most accurate thing as far as reproduction of low intensity colours is concerned. Ideally, I would have a CRT monitor for this sort of graphics editing, but I cannot do that because I don't have room for a CRT, so the closest I can get is to calibrate my LCD display as well as possible, make graphics that look good on that monitor, and then hope that the calibration is good enough that the stuff I make looks good on most well-calibrated monitors.
The unfortunate fact is that most LCD monitors don't reproduce colours accurately on default settings, and almost all of them require some degree of gamma calibration to reach optimal performance. CRT monitors are by far better for graphics editing as far as colour accuracy goes, but they're huge, bulky and almost extinct...
And finally, as with all art, not everyone can be pleased by the same work. You're not the only one to note that the starfield appears a little bit too "busy" or cluttered with stars for comfort... I hope the display calibration helps.
-
And Herra has exactly 3000 posts..
LCD indeed for me too does some funky things. Manipulating contrast, brightness etc can do a lot although I personally found the starmap quite funky. There's several suggestions in the HLP wiki for gamma and rendering settings, some might also give a really great improvement but I'm not sure if that goes for skyboxes.. spaceboxes, well you know.
