Well Ive got a laptop to work on and since I lent Freespace 2 to my Uncle for a while I currently cant play it.
No matter, I shall slake the desire with this project.
I have started a few Freespace related projects n the past but never quite got them finished...at all.
But its not been wasted.
Ive been learning and improving, and today I moved on to the challenge of creating a high poly Terran marine.
Im trying to keep the same basic look but add new features and details so that it wouldn't look out of place in a current gen freespace FPS.
I dont have much so far because I only started it today and ive been trying to get the basic shapes to look right.
My two main references are the "Hall Fight" cutscene and a Hi-Res image of the Bastions main hall.
Ive included what I have so far and, to show im not joking around, the project I did before this, a bust of a Sith Lord that I designed myself.
(And dont worry, this time he will have trousers :P)
PS: Not quite sure where this thread should go as its not strictly Freespace modding nor is it missions and campaigns..etc

Heres the Sith Lord bust just to show you that im serious about this model.

The right hands seems a little bit too small. Despite that this model reminds me of Assassins Creed :)
-
Update.
The leg armour needs some work before I can really start detailing this model.
But i think its coming along quite nicely, I may have to tweak some proportions though.
Let me know what you think.

Yep, coming along nicely. But the hands look really odd. Maybe making them a bit thiker and folding the thumbs a bit inwards will help to make them look more natural.
So that the fingers would look like this :... from the front, only upside-down of course (assuming the hands are held forward, palms down).
Well.... not necessarily full 90°, but at least a bit in that direction.
-
The arms are placeholers really at this point.
Most of that will be addressed in ZBrush, where I plan to sculpt the cloth parts like the upper legs and the arms and in between the armour.
I generally move to ZBrush after the armour is finished though.
-
If this comes out anything like your Sith Lord model, it'll be something to drool over for sure. :)
-
I hope it does.
It may not look like much now but even the sith lord started out like this (see attachment)

So... Darth Katan, huh? I can't remember much about him. After the war, where did Katan settle?
-
More work is happening.
I noticed that in the hallfight cutscene their "breath masks" had the apparatus fairly visible underneath it (as a lump).
So ive made it a bit more visible by having "breath tubes".
Id have a picture of the whole character but theirs not much to show in the trouser department as its mostly cloth and wont be modelled until I get to the ZBrush phase.
Comments and criticism are (as always) welcome.

Nice work! I sent you a PM, did you have any thoughts on that?
-
I didnt notice I had a PM from you :P
But yeah it sounds cool.
I was planning on doing a vasudan anyway and comping him into a scene with the terran.
I am trying to get into this CG Art professionally so ive been working at it A LOT.

Update on the model.
I think its coming together nicely.
Let me know what you think.

Really looking forward to seeing these things shooting the hell out of a Shivan, only to get their ass blasted by another one.

There's just something about it that seems... off. The human proportions namely. For putting those to the test, I'd suggest trying MakeHuman (http://sites.google.com/site/makehumandocs/Home), if only to get a good approximation on proportions. Other than that, the design looks quite true to FreeSpace.
-
Ive built it around a stock human that comes prepackaged with my modelling package.
According to that the proportions are fine.
I know what you mean though, I noticed it myself, but I checked all the proportions and theyre fine.
SO I dont know what it is.
-
I hate to sound overly critical, but perhaps your base human model is lacking in terms of accuracy?
-
First impressions of the proportions, I'd say the chest and shoulders probably need to be broader, and the thighs needto be a tad slimmer - that might fix it.
Leaving aside the proportions though, as a pece of detail modelling it's very good.
-
I know the thighs are a bit bulging.
They are like that because the marines wear very bulging/baggy trousers. And I wanted to keep that element for my model.
-
Maybe this could be used to make a head ani for marines once you get a bit further.
-
Also, the wrists and hands look a bit off, especially the left one from this perspective. Specifically, the left hand looks as if it were caught in some sort of meat grinder and all the muscle and fat removed, leaving only skin and bone, in other words, really scrawny. I would assume that the left/right sides are mirrors though, which means either they both have the same problem, or it's purely a matter or perspective.

The right hands seems a little bit too small. Despite that this model reminds me of Assassins Creed :)
You know the hands and arms in general are identical right?
-
:bump:
How's it going? :D

Guys... Krallis hasn't been logged in since Oct 24... If and when he returns, he'll post an update. Until then, I vote we stop bumping this topic with smileys.
