Honestly, I don't frequent this site much (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/StandardSciFiSetting) but it made Freespace lose a tiny fraction of its lustre :(
edit- fixed titular typo.

Annnnnnd, after about two hours of tvtropes-ing, I'm back. Thanks a lot.
Yes, that page is frighteningly accurate for way too many stories.
-
It's all in how you execute anyways; only a few plots are truly dead.
-
That's the point of the site though: everything's been done before, in one way or another. Truly original plot ideas are practically nonexistent. The originality and freshness of a story is all in how the ideas are used and executed.
The fact that Freespace is not a really unique story at its core does not make it bad. The fact that it presented the atmosphere and story well and in intriguing ways is what makes it good.
-
Also, don't forget that FS is rather old, so at the time, it was much more unique than it's now.
Along with Wing Commander and X-Wing, it is one of the "space shooter archetypes", which others tried to follow.

Your beloved Starcraft is also on that page too. :P

Oh I get it! SCARILY............... I wondered what sacrily was!

It's not 'my beloved', and I read the page in depth years ago, you inbred lunk. I'd never defend Starcraft as a remarkably original piece of storytelling.
-
Starcraft is like FS in that matter though.
It's quite original, others ripped off it.
It's more a case of Seinfield Is Unfunny (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SeinfeldIsUnfunny), as these games (along with other SF classics from that era) basically created the Standard SciFi Setting.
-
I dunno, I think the standard SF setting happened around the time of Tolkien.

Wasn't there a rule about flaming other members?
Like, NOT TO?
WTF, Batman?
I can't believe I have to tell you this twice.

I like to think Hades and I have an understanding.

What you two are doing in the privacy of ...whatever..., I don't care. This is not IRC. There are different rules here, you understand? And I would remind you that as a Global Moderator, there is a bit of decorum expected of you. Or at the very least, a slight bit of respect for the rules.

If only America's policies on our non-heterosexual citizens were so open!'
In general though I think a bit of ribbing is a good way to prevent pointless megathreads. Better to derail into some juicy ad hominems than waste time on THINKING LOGICALLY

Scarily sacrilegious :nervous:

I dunno, I think the standard SF setting happened around the time of Tolkien.
It really depends what we're talking about.
Some parts of what is described on the trope page are as old as Lensman (which may be the first Space Opera in existance), while some, especially video game-specific ones, were introduced in games such as Wing Commander, Starcraft, FreeSpace, Descent or Quake. Notice how broad are some definitions on the page, standard SF setting wasn't created at once by one particular work.
FS didn't had many games (aside from X-Wing and Wing Commander) to follow, same with Starcraft or Doom.

Who are you and what have you done with the real General Battuta?

tvtropes can tropify everything. And FS was pretty original.

I dunno about original. Quality, in some respects, but FS1 did nothing new narratively whatsoever.

Who cares that its standard.
Its the execution that counts, and Freespace executes it pretty damn near perfectly (for me at least).
