I just tried playing FSO for the first time (never played Freespace before, either), and during the first training mission, I can't see the drone, only the red targeting box around it, and i can't see the lasers that my own ship fires. Any suggestions?

Please read this thread (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=56279.0).

Random guess. I'm assuming you used the FSO Installer here.
Go into your root FS2 directory, look for a file called 3613update, and move it into the folder called mediavps_3612.
Reading that thread won't hurt though. Debug log would be handy.

Thanks, that helped! I couldn't run the debugger until that fix you suggested, because the debugger just crashed on launch.

Out of curiosity, when did you run the installer? Please tell me it was before yesterday.

No, it was exactly yesterday.

About what time of day? Early, late, middlin'?
By the way if you want enhanced graphics make sure to select mediavps_3612 as your mod.

Well according to my downloads, the freespace open installer arrived on my harddrive at 9AM Oct 25th, but I recall it taking FOREVER to finish installing. What does it do, download the data online? Anywho I think I remember it taking until about noon-1PM to finish. Why do you ask, was one of the online files updated at around that time?

Yes, hopefully. And yes, the installer does download everything from the net (While we are all around awesome people, we haven't yet cracked the secret of compressing several gigabytes worth of data into one tiny java application)

Well I assumed the 30kb java app was the online downloader, it confused me that there was also another 20mb exe. I figured the EXE would have all the data included, but I guess it is just a java applet compiled with the runtime. I'm not used to online downloaders, most game mods include all the data in the original download, that way they can distribute it via torrent and save bandwidth.
Thanks for the tip to load the mod, btw. I was wondering why my game looked nothing like the screenshots I've seen, but now it does. Running at 1080p with full AS filtering and anti-aliasing, it looks simply beautiful. A very fun dogfighting game, although it will take a while to forget the experience of Xwing-vs-tiefighter.

FS2 manages to beat out XvT in a few respects. (Capships in FS2 are actually worth respect, for one.)

I have the almost the same problem as this guy can't see drone in the tutorial for freespace port, but I can see my lasers. I downloaded/installed everything this morning at 10am 10/28 if that information is useful. Only install error messages I recall were for Shivans and Twilight. I'm going to try the 1st suggestion and see what happens before requesting help.

Update.. I see that file has already been moved to the correct place. Tutorial works perfect if I play freespace 2. I'm just gonna play through 2 for now & I'll come back if I have problems when I go back to the FS port campaign. This is awesome!
