Who else thinks they are awesome ?
& how long do yours usualy last ?
& with how many people ?
4-5 days ?
7-10 dudes ?
-
Indeed they are fun. Let's you see gaming fellas you normally won't see (or even hear on TS).
Ours last the whole weekend, and once a year from thursday to sunday. And participants gor from 20 to 40, depending on the situation. Most of our dudes have work and family so... not gonna happen every time.

Been a few years since I went to one. My old CS clan used to organise a few, 14-20 of us in a scout venue down Kettering over a weekend, fun times except when we kept overloading the power in the main hall. As well as CS we also found out that drunken Ricochet was hilarious

They are indeed awesome.
The ones I attend generally last 4-7 hours (including lunch breaks) with 8-30 people. I'm not really into the whole 'let's game for days straight!' thing, I actually lack the ability to play a game for more than 3-4 hours with no breaks. There's that and I don't think I'd be able to put my RL life on hold for twelve hours>. :P
Generally the lot of us tack LANs onto other events, like curry nights, movie nights, post-exam gatherings/piss ups, etc. I guess that funny thing called school limits people of my age group from taking days out to play games as well. :D
-
My LANs are usually all-nighters with 6-8 people. Haven't been to one in a while. Will need get around to that after school's over.

Exactly the same for me.

I'd love to, but:
I don't have a laptop.
I don't have a computer I can just lug around.
I suck at CS. (Plus people always play the same stupid map...)
I'm slightly better than Novice at UT.
I don't have enough geeky friends...
But if I can, I do...and can only try to win by calling myself fail names...

I used to lug my desktop around (including one funny time I got stopped by the police with a mate lugging it by hand to his house and that was back in the day of CRT monitors), to be honest you dont need geeky mates especially with the modern WI-FI networks just need mates interested in the games you want to play. and as for games when its with mates anything with a multi-player option will do the trick, lost huge numbers of hours to StarCraft, Total Annihilation, Doom, CS, DoD. classic UT and FS2. there is nothing wrong with getting an hour of LAN play in, breaking for lunch, kicking a football about for an hour then going back on again.

I love Ladies, Alcohol and Nachos Parties

Not having a laptop would suck, but most of my friends are perfectly okay with console lanning and so it forms this middle ground between the '****, that's nerdy' and 'so when are we doing a 9 day lan again?' people I know.
Also, I suck at CS too. :P I just go around spraying the M249 and having a good laugh.

I second this.

im luckey if i can get 3 people to show up for a game of starcraft (and one of those is usually my sister who still hasnt figured out that missile turrets wont save her from zerglings). but as far as lan parties go, you can get a better turnout iff you buy a couple cases of beer.
-
light booze like beer helps, but for an informal gathering of mates 2-4 is a good number especialy if your game(s) has any vs computer capability so most stratargy games and games like UT with its own built in and idiot proof bot system are great for small gatherings. Set UT classic up on facing worlds 1 with the self balancing difficulty for good times (my dad wont play with me on that setting because the game ends up ramping itself upto the godlike difficulty and he has to be having a good game to keep up.

I'm going to one for the first time on saturday, and then another one next weekend :p
-
the closest i've come to that is when we'd have the entire programming class play RA2 over the classroom network back in HS.

good times, have fun :D

The Descent community used to have a bunch of LANs back in the day, but that was mostly before I was really active in it, and they've essentially died out now. It always seemed like a lot of fun.
-
There's still folks doing IPX over Kali.... at least a few in Descent from what I've seen.
-
I still go to a LAN every so often.
The kind of LAN i do these days, is drive to the guys' house on Friday (usually in a neighboring city). Friday night is just for having a few drinks, catching up, and grilling some food on the grill outside. We don't play games till Saturday. We game most of saturday, and most of sunday. We stop in the evenings, as that's when our girlfriends come over =). We also take turns cooking breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Leave sunday afternoon, back at work monday.
Maybe once or twice a year i'll do that.

I got turned down for the first one last night because *drumroll* ....There will be COD and Halo there. :ick: Jeez, I don't even intend on playing them.
-
Wait, what? They said you couldn't come just because there was Halo and COD there?
What the hell? What a bunch of cocks.
-
Shouldn't this be in the dedicated Gaming subforum?
-
yea, probibly.

Went to a LAN party yesterday, 6 players, machines provided, bring your own keyboard and mouse. We played Quake 3 Arena, I was the only one with any previous experience. First game was a "warm up" FFA on q3dm6, I won with 20 frags, second place had 3...
Bottom two players and me were stuck in a team for CTF, we won 12-0 :(
-
Wound up going to the LAN party this weekend, but I shouldn't have even bothered. As soon as TF2 finished downloading, everyone got on that and played until midnight, and I didn't want to ask if I could have a turn, since I don't know most of the people too well. The people I did know very well, on the other hand, were playing L4D2, which I didn't want to ask about since zombies creep me out. So I wound up playing online Alien Swarm with random A-holes I didn't know for 8 hours straight.
-
Alien swarm, eh? You're in the HLP Steam group yes? What's your username?
-
username (the one you put in the invite) is lusifur_the_schnozzle. The one that shows up is Lusifur.
