Title: Doc Ocks dream of solar fusion nears (eventually) reality.
Post by: Colonol Dekker on October 28, 2010, 01:21:15 pm
www.https://lasers.llnl.gov/ A test ignition was successfully carried out at 75% of full power at the national ignition facility using a capsule of frozen Hydrogen. It was a less potent capsule for safety reasons. . . We don't need a supernova taking out the american continent. ;)

i'm not really sold on inertial confinement.  sure it works, but not really viable for power generation imo since you have to zap one small pellet at a time.

Cost to Gain is not too bad though. Gotta admit.

Plus it looks cooler than all that steam turbine cack.

except there will probably be a steam turbine bolted on top of it to produce electricity.

and what is the current efficiency of it?

90% of the fusion stuff they teach us (which is already pretty limited) is about magnetically confined plasma.  i'm honestly not sure how they plan to convert the heat for IC fusion.  the shoot reload thing is too slow to build up enough heat to use a standard steam cycle i would think.  it's possible they have a direct ion conversion system for it, which would be ~90% efficient.  tokomaks use both direct ion and standard steam cycle for a combined efficiency of ~50-60%

Well it's better than burning millenia old animal matter. Plus it may lead to half-life syt;e scenarios too. :D
