Hello,
I have a FRED query: Is it possible to have the player wings show up under one name in the briefings and loadout editors, but then show up under different names in-mission? Something tells me that it's not possible, but I wanted to check with those superior to me.

Mate, we're all on the same level, it's alright. :) Those with experience have exactly that, experience, rather than any kind of domineering powers over the 'baby FREDers'.
Apologies for thread drift, I think I may have misinterpreted that.
Anyway, by showing up under a different name in briefing, are you talking about having the briefing icon names change, or something else? As for load out editors, I'm not sure about that one. I *think* there may be a sexp that can allow you to change the name of a ship at the beginning of a mission, so if worst comes to worst you can use that; but I'm not sure, it's been quite a while since I was FREDing on a regular basis.

I know I can do it with the briefing icons, that's no problem. It's the ship/loadout editor that's my main concern.
It'll be a while yet before I get to FREDding the mission in question, so there's time for others to input. No pressure. :D

Hm, well you could try using the callsigns in mission for the ships. What is it you're trying to do, more specifically; have wing designations in mission and something different in the load out screen, vice versa, or something else entirely?

This. Basically, to put this in context, the wings are supposed to have proper names (like Alpha, Beta etc), and I want those names to show up in the loadout screens. But, the plot is that someone has tampered with the designation system for the lulz and the wing names in-mission are totally different to what they're supposed to be.

So I'm guessing it's only implementable using a rather awkward solution, or otherwise impossible?

Well, you could change the wings in the misc tab of the editor.
Then make the ships in the wings invisible and make them disappear.
And replace them with oddly named ships.
I think.
But that's just my spur of the moment solution.

Problem that I thiiink I see with that is the wing indicators. However...if the player were, say, the only ship in Alpha, and everybody else was in Beta and Gamma, and then you used the last two squadron slots for the 'mixed-up' wings and vanished Beta and Gamma immediately on mission start...

Yeah, that's what I was getting at my changing the wings in the misc tab of the editor (which I think wings is under). Kind of. :P
