Spoon, let's talk about the new equipment system we've developed together for our mods!

NO DROID803S ALLOWED

Spoon and I have worked out a GLORIOUS PLAN. In this plan, players will be able to sacrifice a mounted weapon for various kinds of equipment! These equipments will do things like:

Give you faster afterburner, shield or weapon recharge.
Give you resistance to specific types of damage! (Mount specialized shield generators or modular armor!)
Psi emitters that make nearby enemies LE STUPID! (probably more of a wings of dawn thing if at all; it's possible but stupid hard)
Ammo packs that automatically reload your primary or secondary banks!
Change the damage types your primary weapons are doing! Want a phase amplifier for your proton pack? Can do!

What else can we do, Spoon? Aren't we cool?

So, have you guys learned LUA behind my back?

I don't doubt that you can do it via sexps, but seriously? This is what scripting is for.

We can do this in FRED. It doesn't necessarily make it a good idea, but it's there!  :nervous:

No promises as to what extent or even if at all either of us will use this; we reserve the right to cut it at any time; etcetera and whatnot.

It's funny how great minds think alike. One day on IRC we started chatting about this subject. I was like "So here's this idea I had for WoD but it didn't make it in" and Battuta was like "Oh cool, I had a similar idea and blabla" from there on we started exchanging ideas.
I first had a slightly different approach but soon came to realize that Battuta's way was the best way for this.

So both WiH and WoD will come with equipment original idea, do not steal!


Like, take a shield generator add on, which will increase your shield regeneration rate. You just need to have it equipped on your craft to receive the benefits of this passive effect. But if you find yourself in a pinch and you really need your shields back up pronto. Select your shield generator and activate it! Giving you a instant boost to your shield energy, or an incredible fast recharge rate for a limited time.

Now doesn't that sound like fun?

Please, for the sake of sanity, USE SCRIPTING!

Don't do a system like this via sexps. This is what scripting was MADE for, so use it!


Of course, that just means that it'll be up to me to do it. Thanks for nothing.

EDIT: Seriously, have you not seen this (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=71501.0)? Sons, I am disappoint.

A zillion things have done this. It is not currently done in FreeSpace.

And I played Tachyon and loved it, thank you very much, but equipment there got its own slot.

Is there any actual work done on this system, ie is it actually functional at this moment, or not just yet.

It works 100% with sexp's
Scripts, still have to be done.

Will the number of guns/missiles in the equipment bank affect the effect? Like, if you mount a shield boost in a quad-gun bank, will it have twice the boost of the same thing mounted in a two-gun bank?

JG, he's talking about "external" equipment pods. Militaries today have similar stuff, most notable support equipment are radar jamming pods and drop-tanks (for extra fuel).

It sounds like an impressive project. Best of luck to you and Spoon. It would be nice to get them in the end working with their own banks, but best to do this one step at a time. Go for it guys! :yes:

You could just add a primary or secondary bank that only accepts the equipment items. Easy peasy.

I know that for War in Heaven part of the motivation was to have something interesting to do with the slots nobody uses on ships that have no primary fire linking (for example, the two-gun bank on the Uriel.)

Yes yes that is uber cool for stuff like drop pods and extensions, and for utility packages.

However, it is not so awesome for modelling a replaceable on-board reactor, different models of engines/thrusters, customizable shield generators, armor plating etc...At least not all a once. Which is what would be awesome for a merc-style campaign.

Well, I could do it now but it'd have about fifty billion clones of the same ships for every possible combination, which is hardly a good plan...

Well, from what I've heard the biggest issue in the way of adding "tertiary weapons" is the HUD...

For now, equipment slotted in Primary/Secondary slots is the best we have. :nod:

Used existing icons for lack of anything better at the time.
The art works for multi and for campaign.

It is tacked on. If someone wants to do something better, that'd be absolutely great. In the meantime, we work with what we've got. As you've told me before - don't get greedy!

Wow, this is precisely what I need! Interchangeable ship equipment!

This would work perfectly for modifying one universal fighter chassis, to be either a bomber, heavy assault, or interceptor. :drevil:

My search for fighters and bombers that look like Terran/Ancient hybrid craft is over! Now, how do I go about making secondary weapon ship configuration modules like this? Does anyone have a tutorial? Or a link?

Well, this equipment cannot modify hard tableside values like ship speed, max afterburner speed, total ship shield capacity, or anything like that. It can alter hitpoints (indirectly), and can give you more afterburner _time_, but I'm not sure about swapping between those three roles just with equipment.

Dang...I had a feeling that would have been too good to be true.

Then again, I just had an epiphany - I'll make multiple ship classes using the same ship model.
