I heard that there is a program (and maybe a source code) for a program that will allow one to convert 3DS files into Cataclysm GEO/PEO ship models. If you guys can find the program and/or the code, the Apocalypse Project would go much smoother. (I myself forgot the link.)

I'll take a look around and ask Ceejay, but no promises.

What would we need a progtam like that for? We are converting HW models to FS2, not vice versa.
Or am I just missing something here?

What I mean is that if we can reverse engineer the program, we might have a better chance of getting TAP done faster.

Hold the coach for a second and enlighten me.
How exactly are you converting the files from geo/peo to pof and what are you doing in-between.
Another thing, the same question but about homeworlds LIF files. Are you cutting and pasting those or using some type of codec file converter?

We're using 3Dexploration. It converts Homeworlc .peo:s to truespace .cob:s, and also converts the textures to .bmp:s.
A real handy program :)

Basically the standard method for used for many HW mods. Just wondering :)

Which makes me wonder, how were the 3dexploration guys convinced to put the Homeworld model code into 3dex. Did they do that themselves for fun, or did someone else. Or sumfing.
-
I'm not entirely sure about this but going back a good while to the prime of HW's days when the Red Project site was still up (which I understand joined or became part of homeworld universe, but don't quite that). Some of the HW community had ties to people developing 3D software viewers and modellers. I don't remember specifics but it is possible that this could have been the 3D Explorer development person(s).
Just a thought.
-
...aha. Just noticed that 3dex. actually supports a multitude of formats (quake, half-life, whatever). Cool.

There you go!

A note about 3dEx, don't DL the demo from the main site, it's cripple-ware that turns itself off after it's time limit expires and I don't think it supports PEO/GEOs anymore. Instead, go to The Relic Forums (http://forums.relicnews.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=3024) and DL from there. The version doesn't technically expire and it's not warez because you simply don't choose to upgrade.
