I need help to add a custom ship to both Freeespace2 and FRED. Can anyone give me a easy and simple guide of how to do it, the wiki didn't help me :wtf:. thx
-
Yes. Select a mod in the launcher (make sure you're on 3.6.12 or later.) Open FRED. It will respect the launcher's command line and open the mod files; you'll have access to its ships.
You may actually need to download a 3.6.13 build to be sure.
-
3.6.12 should sync the launcher's active mod with FRED already.
-
i made a mod folder placed both the ships model and table files into there, even changed them to tlb and tbm files and did not work, even tried editting the root_fs file and that didn't work. So what now, i need a guide thats tells me from start to finish on how to add custom ships to FS2 and FRED.
-
Okay. First, set up a mod folder. In that folder, make a "data" folder. In there, create directories named "maps", "models", "missions" and "tables". Put all .pof files into "models", all textures into "maps", and the tbls in "tables". Please refer to the FSWiki's modding pages (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/Portal:Modding) for more info.

[...] even tried editing the root_fs file and that didn't work.
You should NEVER EVER do that. It is very likely to corrupt your entire install. Keep off the original game files at all times, there is nothing in there that a mod cannot do.
-
Precisely. There is no reason to ever mess with the retail FS2 files.

guys i just noticed that i need to use the open version of FRED
but for some reason i need open GL 1.2 to run it and i have 1.1.
Don't say update my drivers i have done that and still i have open GL 1.1
Is there a way i can manual update Open GL , that would be help full.
-
What kind of graphics card do you have?
To answer your question, No, you can't update OpenGL manually if your GPU doesn't support it, and OpenGL 1.2 support is the bare minimum FSO needs. Meaning that it might work with OpenGL 1.2, but it won't be pretty, and won't run well.
Seriously though, OpenGL 1.2 was released in 1998. Any GPU you can buy today is better than that.
-
the type of card i have is a Mobile Intel 4 series Express Chipset Family. I've updated this and still i cannont run FRED open but i can run FS2 open with no problems, so how does that work. Is there a way i can check which version of Open GL i have, due to what u said i think FRED is not detecting it correctly. Also i need a tutorial on how to make a fighter/bomber for FS2,
-
Please run the FRED2 debug build (fred2_open_3_6_12d_INF.exe or something like that). Then post the file called FRED2_Open.log from the data folder here.

where do i get the fred deboug build?
I have run FRED open and it comes up with the following:
Error: Current GL Version of 1.1 is less than required version of 1.2

When you downloaded FS2_Open whatever version it should have come with 4 files. 2 FRED and 2 FS2. One FRED and one FS2 end in R these are the release builds. One FRED and one FS2 en in D these are debug builds. Runt he FRED one with the D.
-
GOOD NEWS!!!!
I opened FRED open, got rid off the error report, double clicked on a little blueish-grey box (which always appeared), minimized FRED and then re-maximised it and i can now see the WHOLE field :D
Now all i need to do is get it setup with the mod so i can use costum ships :D
-
Why the hell are you using FRED2_Open 3.6.5?????????
We're at version 3.6.12. Please delete those builds, and use the FreeSpace Open Installer (http://www.fsoinstaller.com/) to mupdate your stuff.
-
3.6.5 had a bug in it where by it would work out the version of OpenGL using only the number after the decimal point. Which meant that people often had OpenGL 2.0 or 2.1 and were still thought to be running the wrong version.
At least I think it was 3.6.5. Definitely some version had that bug.

So,
First download the FS open installer then install it, then make a mod folder then make a folder called data and put folders called tables, maps, models and a mission into it then put the .pof files in the models folder and the tables in the tables folder, Then open up the launcher, then in the launcher select the my mod folder then i should be able to use it both in FRED and FS, right? :wtf:
-
Yes.
-
Thx for helping to find the problem guys, i hope this works :p
-
Very good news people.
I've manged to get my custom ship into FRED. all i did was i got the ship.tbl file from the Root.vp file placed it in the tables folder in my mod folder opened it and copyed and pasted the custom ships tbl files data into it and saved it (i have not changed the root file in anyway tho). AND IT WORKS.
Now all i need is the maps for it due to it is invisible
thx for the help

how do i add textures to my ships thats i create. When i make them in true space and then change them to a pof file, then open Lith unwrap, but i do not see my model, how do i make it visible and add the textures to them, or do i have to do something else to do it?
-
you have to unwrap your model first. Look for a tut on how to do that.
here's an old tut for TS and Lith:
