Title: Don't worry Englanders, you'll be welcome over here

We've had a few posts before, but it looks like the UK continues to go down the tubes due to budget crisis. But don't worry, you can become 'mericans! History loves irony more than anything else after all.

I suspect the British problem is probably more due to their trust in American currency than anything else  :doubt:

If they invest more in China I bet it'll turn around.

I'd just like to point out that many (maybe even most) colleges in America charge a lot more than that for tuition. Hell, my college is one of the cheapest and even they charge $7300 for out-of-state!

Yeah, it's kind of amusing to see people going haywire over $9000 tuition when there's a good chunk of US schools that charge over $40,000. :p

not many students actually pay that much to such schools however.  the scholarship money thrown around by private schools is insane.

At least we don't riot over here when the government has to renege on promises that 2 full generations of people have been conditioned to believe are not only economically feasable but their right.

Then why do you have guns? :p

The 2nd amendment claim has always been that you have them for exactly that reason. :p

I know. My point was that it's always been a claim that you need them to prevent totalitarianism.

So instead of rioting you wave guns around and threaten a revolution instead. Not exactly a less violent solution, just one that has more violence, less often. :p

I didn't see anyone (credible) waving guns around this most recent election two weeks ago.  Perhaps I was watching the wrong channel.  The conditioning I was speaking of is the (misguided) idea that a Middle Class lifestyle is a right of every human being currently alive.

the lifestyle per se is not a right, but the ability to attain it is.

I've seen many people on the GOP side waving guns around like there's a zombie apocalypse on the way over the last two elections.

Really? So you'd support the raising of taxes for middle and upper classes in order to raise more taxes for defence and public projects then? Cause if you raised the tax you could very quickly get rid of the national debt.

you forget we've got a couple trillion in brand new government programs to fund now also.  the tax raises are just going to be keeping us afloat from those.  raising taxes might be an easy way to dig us out, but that doesn't mean it's the right way to do it.

i honestly can't form an opinion on taxes right now.  i've always idealized that i would have no problems with paying them, so long as it's actually called for and not made unnecessarily high by paying for rediculous ****.  i suppose i'll be making up my mind in a couple months when i start working.

I didn't forget. I'm simply saying if you're starting from Liberator's point of view that no one has a right to a middle class life style why should anyone care if we raise the taxes on the middle class?

Bear in mind that having to pay 9% of your income over a certain threshold for year for 30 years effectively is a tax on the middle class.

i think the wording Liberator was looking for is people aren't ENTITLED to a middle class life style, and the point was the government has no business trying to hand them out at the expense of others.

Yes but given that people have paid tax for years under the proviso that this money would be used to give their children a university education it is rather taking liberties to then suddenly turn around and say "Actually, we're not doing that any more, but we're not going to cut your taxes either"

Which is where I'm going with this one.

They're students.
They're protesting.

I've seen students get physical over far less than this, which is important. There's both positive and negative sides when dealing with the phrase 'overt Police presence' at demonstrations, particularly student ones.

Kara, what you do is elect leaders who won't rob the pot to pay for some pork fat program in an attempt to ellicit votes from the people said program benefits when said program runs out of money.  If I took money from my utilities budget to pay for trip to Vegas and my lights get cut off, I don't have the benefit of raising taxes to cover the overage, neither should government.

And, yes to Bob and Klaustrophobia, that's what I meant.  A middle class lifestyle isn't a right, but you have a truckload of politicians telling people that it is.  The only right is that government get out of the way to allow me to attain said lifestyle.
