Title: Anime ship
Post by: gevatter Lars on April 29, 2002, 04:30:34 pm
OK this is my first try to make an Anime type ship. Tell me what you think.
BTW I will make a low poly version of that thing...

Tastes like excessive bandwidth consumption.

...which, I should note, tastes distinctly like overcooked human flesh.

Cool ship though...a bit to flat in places, but good.

I've never thought of Anime having it's own style of ships. There are, after all, tons of different ships in Anime that look nothing alike. Now as far as a ship that's like a ship in a specific Anime, that's different. I think ship styles are series/game specific. (Unless you make a ship with spikey hair, huge eyes, and no lips... ;)) That said, it's an interesting looking ship. The tail fins, in the front pic, look like they're both angled the same way though and that doesn't look right. Might be the render not the model though. It's definitely an original. :)

BTW, you misspelled style on the webpage.

Stile: one of the vertical members in a frame or panel into which the secondary members are fitted

Also a ladderlike construction used to climb from paddock to paddock, over tall fences.

Ups sorry for the misspell, I have mixed english and german in one word.
About the fins, yes its the render that looks weird and I know its a little bit flat, btw what do you think, what class is it... figher, bomber, cap?
I thought of it as a cruiser, one of the biggest ship class that will be in my mod, when I ever finish it.

In general, destroyers are the biggest regular ships in the normal FS2 campaign. I'd say your ship might be usable as a destroyer or corvette. It's way too detailed to be a fighter. (And if those pods all over it are turrets then definitely not a small ship.)

Big turrets and some fighter launch tubes..... It's a battlecarrier of some sort.

For the question what is bigger or not, I use my own scales.
Dreadnoughts -> DN biggest ships
Cruiser -> CR
Carrier -> CS
Destroyer -> DST
Corvette -> Cor

About the fighter tubes, that aren't fightertubes that are Capmissile lunch tubes. Only the 2 in the wings are fighterbays and the pods are turrets... Beam turrets. The ship belongs to a supirior race, beside that the ship has nothing to do with the FS story. It is part of my own little universe I am developing at the moment.

Wow thats a good one its the ship from Harlock Saga, right? I like these textures a lot, are they directly from the series or did you made them yourself?
Damm I want to be that good. Venom send me your brain so that I can extract the parts where your knowlege for modeling is and combine that parts with my own ^___^
Beside that, Venom would you be so good to tex my one or does anybody has a good tex for it?

yeah, that's the Arcadia.
I've noticed that apart from the French and Spanish ones (and Japanese, obviously :p) , there's no Harlock series available for foreign countries besides the ( quite bad, in fact ) Harlock saga one? Too bad for you :p
If I was able to make such maps, I would rule the world ;) those are scans I found on the net ( there: http://www.employees.csbsju.edu/rsorensen/modelcitizen/gallery/arcadia/ ). Only work was to cut them to the right size and edit the hue so the colours would fit. the stupid ship won't fire, tho, dunno why. As you can see on the pics, the turrets work, they aim and follow the target, but they won't shoot... bah.

Maybe the turrets are assigned weapons that aren't allowed for that ship type? FRED2 doesn't complain about that. Try giving them very basic fighter weapons (Like the subach.) and see if it works.

I would think that anime ships generally have disproportionally large wings, tails, guns, and other useless extensions hanging off the fuselage.

The technical term for this is 'Ninja Rocketships'.

Most of the time anything Anime-like in space could be done in .2 seconds with a Lathe tool.:D

Nice ship.

No, the Hecate is something one of the :V: staffers' children made with scissors, construction paper, and lots of glue. And a rock, and a booger.

:D  I like that term

On a completely unrelated note, it would be really cool if someone made a mod where all of the freespace ships were animefied

On the other hand, it would be DA SHIZNIT geo-modded. You could carve through all those fins... :wink:

(ok...mebby not, but its still a nice thought)

Anime Techincal Design = Super-Stylized, over-sized, pointless protrustions from the oddest places at the oddest angles that results in some of the coolest, drop-dead gorgeous craft in known space.

Example:  The Albion from Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory.  Why does a space craft need wings?  It doesn't need them even in the atmosphere(Minovsky vehicle flight system, it basically floats.).

I couldn't have said it better ( well, yes I could: I'd have said it w/o the typos :lol: ):
I've been doing models for about 9 years now :p ( well, 7 years of complete crap to be honest, tho, but it gave me some experience anyway).texture is the same: you just have to decide that you will map your damn ship, you'll spend a week on it, then on the second model, you'll spend only acouple of days, and after that, you'll handle it well and it will come just like it comes when you model something. I still need to improve tho, I'm nowhere near as good as Bobboau or Dark, or even Aldo when it comes to making my own maps. But in 20 days I start my CGI formation, so things will improve hehehe :D

Yup.  Practice and (preferably) the right tools.

I've only really been modelling since I joined here (about 1 year now, methinks), and actually drawing maps for about 6-7 months methinks.... so it's not really as hard as you might think to pick it up.

Having the right tools helps, though - you wouldn't believe the difference having Max and Photoshop has made to my newest models. ;7

that's  my pb: I have a really crappy paint prog...
I have photoshop too, but I don't understand at all how it works. anyway, i'll learn it at my CGI formation along with illustrator hehe, so things should improve :)

Aki: thanx :D I'm really proud of my Arcadia, it was painful to build, but really rewarding :)

Bastard. LIES! ALL LIES!

I struggled for weeks on the Nathaniel and came up with NOTHING useful. You have to have talent to be able to create and apply textures, one that I lack. Of course, I'm not half as good a modeller as you either. *heh*

Toughest thing for me (and something I haven't figured out yet) is UV Mapping.
