Title: Vote For The Good Guys (And Axem)
Post by: General Battuta on November 17, 2010, 10:20:30 am
Gentlemen, you know your duty. Victory is beyond us. But let it not be said that the men, woman, and iamzack of Hard Light Productions did not have the testicular fortitude to scream into the storm.

The Tripartite New Alliance of Recent Mods needs your click in 2010's Mod of the Year awards. You have all the votes you need. Use them.

Vote for Wings of Dawn (http://www.moddb.com/mods/wings-of-dawn)

War in Heaven (http://www.moddb.com/mods/blue-planet-war-in-heaven)

and Vassago's Dirge. (http://www.moddb.com/mods/vassagos-dirge)

We all hang out together on IRC, sharing our skillz. Now it's your turn to pool some resources. 3-NARM is counting on you.

FRAK. Feel free to vote for Diaspora (http://www.moddb.com/games/diaspora) as Indie of the Year as well.

You're not limited to one vote per category (mod and indie), just FYI.

I already voted for WIH and just finished voting for the other mods listed.  Could we get this highlighted per chance?  I know its not a mod release but I would love to see one of these mods make the top 100.

Not likely to happen with our numbers, and I dunno, I'm reluctant to highlight something with these three specifically. For example although it hasn't released anything I think Inferno is also up in contention; same with Earth Defense. I personally will only be voting for things that have released this year, and, uh, Diaspora.

If I could I would vote a hundred times over for those mods.
Maybe they're not the best out of all mods on ModDB, but they're definitely better than most and FS deserves more attention.

Name 5 non-freespace mods that are better than VD.

We could add Inferno and ED as well. I know they both have ModDB pages even if they're not released yet.

Shouldn't we suggest people to vote released mods, only?

I just want to say that I greatly appreciate the style of this speech and the attitude evinced. Votes have been cast. Though we have no hope of winning, we will not go quietly into the night, but face defeat with our heads held high.

Spoiler:
I also like that iamzack is a category unto itself O_o

No non-Diaspora FreeSpace mod will win. Of the non-Diaspora FreeSpace mods on ModDB, Diaspora, Blue Planet and Inferno have the biggest presences. Only one of those is released.

If I'm not mistaken, in 2007 under indie games - http://www.moddb.com/events/2007-mod-of-the-year-awards/top100 (http://www.moddb.com/events/2007-mod-of-the-year-awards/top100)

I'm probably gonna get a lot of flak for this :p but looking at all the mods that have been in all the categories for previous ModDB MOTYs and the quality of those mods... has been to a pretty high standard and that many Freespace2 mods just don't have that level of quality :(. Having said that, what I can say is that certain aspects of all those Freespace2 mods I've seen and played do have some qualities that are at the top of their game :D. I'd just love to see a mod that pools those great qualities together that could one day crap on 1st person shooter mods  ....no seriously

I would back Vassago's Dirge or, heck, War in Heaven against any of those mods, though. I think the recent batch of FreeSpace campaign releases does more, as a single player story experience, than most commercial or mod products these days.

I remember a discussion on ModDB where people claimed they now tend to prefer 100% original mods/indies over those based on popular universes. They may be exceptions, though.

All three of the recent big releases are very story-focused and have a lot of experimental gameplay as well. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

No mods are mods of games or even Indie games.  Indie games are what we call total conversions around here.
Title: Re: Vote For The Good Guys (And Axem)
Post by: Mobius on November 27, 2010, 04:44:50 am
Depends. All standalone TCs are considered indie games on ModDB, and TCs that require a given game to run are called... mods.

Except for Diaspora, we simply don't attract enough of a fanbase to outvote the Source and UE3 stuff.
Title: Re: Vote For The Good Guys (And Axem)

Yep, the problem is that we don't have a big enough fan base. Remember FS2 didn't sell that well, that's why we didn't get FS3.

Well from leaving the scoreboard up and glancing at it occasionally by my count it seem that something called miner wars is beating us in the futuristic sim category.  We need to get the vote out.  Remember if you voted before the 1st you need to go vote again for the finals.

I've already put in my vote for Diaspora in the top 100.  I was really hoping WIH Part 1 would make it in but alas it didn't.  I knew the odds weren't great but I still held out a small sliver of hope.  There is always next year I guess.

Blue Planet alone is demonstration enough quality isn't the issue. Good luck beating that.. it deserves to be up there. The problem, I suspect, is the relative obscurity of the fs universe and modern player's lack of familiarity to it.
Dunno, maybe if BP went completely standalone it might circumvent that issue a bit. It's certainly brilliant enough to stand on it's own and attract new blood..
Yea. Once all the episodes are out, maybe try for standalone, pimp with a few CGI cutscenes.. hey, one can dream, right? :D

This may be the second or third time I post this, but heh...

A while ago, a guy posted a comment about FreeSpace mods on ModDB. He claimed they're far better than any other sci-fi mod there, yet still the FS community doesn't do enough to promote its work on that site. That results in other games attracting all the attention.

Guess what, I wholeheartedly agree with that statement. We could literally fill that site with released and WIP mods and look like a living community, but don't. Any non-HLPer looking at the list of FS2 mods on ModDB would think the community is nearly dead. Look at a) the number of mods, b) the release dates and c) the released-to-unreleased ratio:

http://www.moddb.com/games/freespace-2/mods

What kind of impression do they give to visitors? I'm 150% sure we can do a lot better than that.

And what are we, as a community, supposed to do about that? It's not like we can force campaign creators to post updates, create moddb profiles, or other stuff.
Title: Re: Vote For The Good Guys (And Axem)
Post by: Mobius on December 05, 2010, 01:48:12 pm
We should still give it a try. Take a look at Vassago's Dirge - it's not a super-uber mods with hundreds of new ships, but its awesome FREDding ensured it a comfortable position there.

The E: Can't we promote ModDB pimping? Ask community veterans to post their campaigns there, and do similar things?
Title: Re: Vote For The Good Guys (And Axem)

Are you arguing about mod quality or ModDB page quality?
Title: Re: Vote For The Good Guys (And Axem)
Post by: The E on December 05, 2010, 01:51:56 pm
If you wish to create a moddb page for the FSCRP, go ahead. If you wish to ask people to create moddb pages for their stuff, go ahead.
Title: Re: Vote For The Good Guys (And Axem)
Post by: Mobius on December 05, 2010, 02:03:12 pm
There's an FSCRP page there, but it's not linked to the main FS2 profile.

About asking other people to create mod profiles - I have been doing that for a while, but I can't do it alone.

Well, good luck finding someone else who cares about this issue enough to help you. Personally, I find this sort of thing highly annoying.
