Title: FreeSpace 2 Open Advertisement
Post by: birdmanrulez on December 05, 2010, 07:37:35 pm
So I found the original freespace about 7 years ago on an old computer and fell in love with it. You can imagine my surprise a few years later when I found a Freespace 2 and my GREATER surprise when i found that a community came together and maxed the textures on every ship and then some. The amount of stuff going into this is enough to blow any gamer's head off. Then I realized, why can't we promote Freespace 2 Open Source?

I'm volunteering a few weekends to spend a couple hours making a nice advertisement for this awesome game. Thanks to my new graphics card, I can run FreeSpace 2 in full texture with 2048 X 1152 res without any lag, perfect for hypercam vid captures.

I really want to credit all the people in this, so if they could step forward and reply to this thread, or if someone could point them out to me, that'd be great. ANY IDEAS that anybody can contribute for an idea of the advertisement would be great.

Another request I have is if anyone with a good graphics card, and textures maxed, could record some awesome clips they think would look good in an ad. I can only come up with so much creativity, so please express your best FS2 moments in these clips. Best format would be highest quality mp4 Microsoft 1 codec, unless you are using hypercam, then the avi is fine.

I have Pinnacle 14, one of the best movie makers out there, so i can do some nice special effects, if anyone would like to suggest something cool, that'd be great as well.

On a side note, if any groups of people who make mods could respond to the post with the mod name and a name of their group, so i can capture some nice footage from that mod and credit them, that'd be great.

Hmmm.

Mock TV ad or some kind of elongated exposition/ad video?

Umm.

Crediting all people might be a bit cumbersome. Crediting "Past and present members of the Source Code Project and FreeSpace Upgrade teams" might be the better option.

I think FS is underrated too, I know how you feel...

I was thinking of making a user friendly "How to install and play FSO" video... maybe add some tips on how .VPs work etc, but It's just a thought so far. I know that was the hardest thing for me to break into FSO.

Where would the advertisement go? On Youtube? There's a lot of FS vids there.

I guess I could say entire fs2 community, but it'd be nice to put some names up there, maybe the main people who started this(not limited to one name per page of course)

As for the ad type, I don't know what elongated exposition is, but it would be about 2-3 minutes long maybe, have many fs2 scenes and some voice acting from them, text banners, and some other things.

Btw, thanks to the new java installer, all you need to do is specify the fs2 retail directory, update the launcher with the mods, and you are done with installation. And yes, it will go on youtube as well as my company website and a few other websites. I can ask for it to go on some gaming site too.(gamefaqs, machina, etc.)

Make sure to include some eyecandy, such as beamz.

Oh, and I reckon "DIVE! DIVE! DIVE!" would be a nice clip to include - highlights the tension and how gripping the game is. :D

oh trust me, the first clip i recorded (NightBlade campaign/mission) involved a karuna(me) firing some nice gauss cannons and a deimos in return carving me up =.= of course im going to cut up the video footage, considering i let myself be diced by those two corvettes.

And yes, that was one of the BEST parts of the campaign, on my first try i hit my afterburners while moving TOWARDS the juggernaut, you can guess where that led to...

Seems like you just want to create a trailer using in-game footage. There are a few vids that have usable footage.

Like this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Hp5FCqRORk&feature=player_embedded).

Okay, excuse me for being skeptical here, but what is "your company website"? And is your ability to get it on gaming sites greater than that of the average person?

Don't just limit to FS2 mods.  If it's about FS2_Open then the TC's should be included as well.  I don't think I have the ability to capture for TBP but I'm sure someone does.  Might be able to get a short Diaspora clip we didn't use but need to check with Kara first.

I am creating a trailer, yes, and it will be with in-game footage and hopefully some cutscenes from some of the larger campaigns. That video you gave me is one of a few that is available in 1080p, which means i can download a full res vid straight from youtube, which is what im looking for. There aren't many videos that go full res from what I've looked up. Besides, a lot of these are gameplays, mostly of actual campaigns, but rarely do people show epic scenes and playing like this. Another feature i would like for the vids to have is for a lot of them to NOT have the HUD on, like the vid you linked (shift-O ingame). Thanks for the link, I'm probably going to use that video as well.

My "company" is really something i started in 6th grade, called DreamBird Productions. Really, its a multi-use website thats been needing a good redesigning, i'll make sure to finish it before posting the vid there. Here is a LINK (http://dreambird.yolasite.com/) to it, it may or may not be available right now, I'm putting it back online just for anyone who wants to see it. And as for the gaming websites, I find that asking nicely combined with the fact that it will be a good vid that i will show them will work well. Its worked well before, and I don't see what will stop it now.

Don't just limit to FS2 mods.  If it's about FS2_Open then the TC's should be included as well.  I don't think I have the ability to capture for TBP but I'm sure someone does.  Might be able to get a short Diaspora clip we didn't use but need to check with Kara first.

Forgive me for forgetting the acronym TC, Ive seen it somewhere before but I forgot its meaning. I'm assuming it means other campaigns and missions and mods.  I welcome a variety of them, but in the end only so much can go into a video, unless of course you would suggest I make separate ads for each of the campaigns and mods in addition to this, which is a pretty good idea come to think of it... As for capturing video, Hypercam2, though glitchy sometimes, is a good video screencapture software. However a good graphics card is a must for recording while capturing good-quality video. speaking of good quality video, does anyone know of something better than hypercam2?

TC stands for Total Convertion, meaning taking ONLY the engine and creating content to use in a stand alone release.

The release itself will not require for any player to have FS installed, as it will provide the game engine bundled with the assets created for said TC.

or so...  :nervous:

Are you telling me half of my friends DIDN'T have to buy/pirate fs2 to play those TC mods? thats just mind-boggling :eek2:

To my knowledge, so far only The Babylon Project is a true standalone release. Diaspora will be. (The Beyond the Red Line demo was also standalone.)

This sounds awesome. Good lucK! What's NightBlade?

If you have friends that can't afford $6 bucks to play FS2 that's even more mind boggling.

yeah, still getting FS2 is not that hard... only 6$ and most important as GB said there are only a few TC's released.

Total conversion =/= stand alone
To take Wings of Dawn for example...

Maybe you will be interested to see this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2A34DGpyUqY).
Apart from the awful quality, this video reflect the smell of a good trailer.

I wish to you best luck, I made a video of my best moment with friends, and it take me 40 hrs for 5 mins (In order to perfectly fit the music, with the pics & vids inside. And because I'm sadistically perfectionnist. Yup.).

I'm ESPECIALLY proud of this video. And you know why ? Not because it's the best on the planet, but it's because every person who were watching it were laughing at it (and that was the goal).

In fact, the perfect video trailer for FreeSpace will be a watchable-by-everyone video. When I talk to some people about FreeSpace (or videogames in general...), some are TOTALLY not interested. But if they SEE FreeSpace in action, in a nice HD movie  :eek2: !!! I think they'll resist NO MORE to the attractive power of this game.

I think any trailer needs to be shorter than that, with a bit less text. Punchier.

Yes, and with a good excellent music. Music must never be underestimated. Best mood in mods (in fact, I look to WIH or Wings of Dawn especially) come for a great part from the music.

You see now, that youtube video is pretty awesome. However, I want it more of a Reach type trailer, and more of an emphasis on improvements. In addition, I like the Idea of a short ad that reflects a different personality for the different mods/campaigns like BP, which is so far one of the few i've played (school likes to interrupt a lot), so if anyone wants a nice ad for their mod, get me a link to it (email me at [email protected] its not connected to me personally, so I'm not worried about distributing it) and I'll see what I can do. As I said before, ALL ideas are welcome, especially music tracks. I have a very limited library of music, but thanks to youtube, that's not really a limit. As for making the ad more punchier, thats my goal. After all, what's the fun in making an ad about an awesome action-packed game if you can't scare the wits out of your viewers. Here is my ideas and different plans for mods so far:

Ad 1: Show fs2 Open Source by itself, without comparing it to anything else, just to show it in its element
Ad 2: Show a generational comparison, from fs -> fs2 -> fs2 open, as more of a commercial element

Campaign ads:
Ad 3: Blueplanet: AoA - show some cutscenes in the actual campaign, followed by some cockpit and camera views(i'll need help with that one) and finally a nice booming ending to cap it off.
Ad 4: Blueplanet: War in Heaven 1 (&2 if it comes out soon) - Show some very short sequences from AoA, followed by the main plot (terran vs terran, UEF vs TVA)

These will probably be ranging from 1 minute to 3 minutes, depending on how good the gameplay i receive, make, and use is.

EMAIL ME WITH IDEAS PLEASE (see above for address) or post them up here if they are that good

Feel free to make/request(files for) usage of any of my footage, assuming the mod guys want it done.

You seriously want to make ads for various mods? Hats off man, that's some dedication.

In that case, check out Flames of War. It might catch your fancy.

There's 2 Flames of War campaigns (or chapters)..the link should work, but if not, you should find it on freespacemods.

And yes, that was one of the BEST parts of the campaign, on my first try i hit my afterburners while moving TOWARDS the juggernaut, you can guess where that led to...
My first reaction was to stare at it for a second (felt like an eternity) going "What the F%#& is THAT!", then I realised it was coming at me, so I dived as suggested but before I knew it I was splattered on its front windscreen...... no happy  :hopping:
I'd love to help, I've got Adobe premier and have done a screen course, so could help anyway needed.

Thanks much, I have had no screening classes, everything I've done I've learned by myself. I do not have any experience with Adobe Premier, but I do have Pinnacle Ultimate Studio 14, which offers some pretty nice stuff, as compared to the vegas equivalent. I'm using that to do my editing, along with Hypercam 2, although I may switch to fraps, I hear it gives better quality.

Yep I have fraps, once you buy the full version its very good at recording ingame
