Title: Thread-locking policies (split from FS1 Player Stat Reset)
Post by: Stormy Fairweather on December 09, 2010, 12:04:16 am
Huh, ok. Still not too clear on how you guys do things around here, but I have a ways to go yet before I get into tinkering with any codes, if I ever even get there. I've modded many games, but they were treasure/stat based, and data tables are something I appear to be good with.

Makes sense. I read the form rules/policies thing and saw nothing that explained why my other thread was closed. Must make modding tough though, probably harder than its worth. But then again, my opinions will always be biased censorship or moderation. (that said, this forum is a private club and privite clubs have the right to enforce there own rules)

At a quick glance, the thread wasn't really going anywhere (not because of you, because of other people) and was just weirdness. That tends to happen in General Discussion threads. And General Discussion is a place for discussion that has nothing to do with FreeSpace whatsoever. So no, that doesn't really affect modding. Of course threads are locked on other boards when necessary but it is a lot more common in GD.

Thread locks are rare outside of GenDisc. They're pretty rare in GenDisc too. You just did an unusually thorough job.

Linguistics are fun.

Don't go splitting hairs there, they're both right. You didn't do much wrong; Apart from you presenting your ideas in such a way as to invite a hostile reaction from the GD hivemind.

Oh, I know I did no wrong, but I see an common inconsistency here, namely the crime changing based on the results.

A completely off base example, a local man hit someone in the back of the head with a maglite flashlight without warning or provocation, the person he struck was tough, tough enough that he was not seriously injured. A month later another man struck someone in the back of the head without warning or provocation using only their fists, but since the person he struck was frail he suffered a fracture, even though exposed to less force.

The former man faced no criminal charges, despite admitting to law enforcement what he did, whereas the latter was sentenced to ten years in jail. But had the injuries been the other way around, so too would the sentence.

So, does the victim change the crime? I don't think so. I am of the opinion both men should have faced equal charges, well, the one with the weapon should have faced more I think.

I see a parallel between that at my post, as had my post received a different reaction, without my actions changing at all, it would not have been closed. Ultimately, I am of the opinion that things need be fair, and that there is no way to censor or mod forums fairly. (of course, in keeping with my self-contradictory nature, I have been to un moderated forums and they are terrible places I don not frequent)

Anyway, discussing forum polices is not something I was interested, The E gave me a satisfactory explanation, and I suspect it should have been left there. Private clubs, private rules, and all that jazz.

here is my thread locking policy:

if a thread offends me, i lock it.
if there is comedy in locking a thread, i will lock it.
if i can boost my ego by locking a tread, it will be locked.
if i dont like the poster, you will be more strongly scrutinized for having your threads locked.
if im in a bad mood and on the forum, rest assured i will lock something.
if i am drunk or under the influence of illegal drugs, stuff may get locked at random, also posts may be edited for my own amusement. (this seems to be one of dekker's rules too)
if iamzack posts in the thread or is the creator of said thread, its gonna make that thread a big bleeping red target for lockage.
if an angry mob demands that a thread be locked, i will join them, and it will be locked.
i reserve the right to lock threads as part of a satanic sacrifice ritual.
that is all (that i can think of right now)
