Title: Total Lunar Eclipse 2010
Post by: watsisname on December 20, 2010, 03:01:16 am
There's going to be a total lunar eclipse tonight, so if you have clear skies and live in the right area then I recommend taking a look.  Not quite as exciting as a total solar eclipse, but still well worth seeing IMO.  Hopefully those of you who were clouded out for the last one (in 2008), will have more luck on this go around.  The timing will favor viewers in North America and Hawaii.  Those farther west in Australia and Japan can catch the later stages after sunset and those in the western parts of Europe can catch the earlier stages before sunrise if you care to be up that early. :P

For an animation of the eclipse and viewing times for your timezone, you can check here (http://shadowandsubstance.com/), and there is additional information here (http://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/LEplot/LEplot2001/LE2010Dec21T.pdf).

I will try to take some photos if I'm not clouded out myself (forecast is still a little sketchy here).  And for those of you in Europe and Asia who can't see this one, you at least have an even better eclipse to look forward to on June 15th of next year, where the moon will pass almost perfectly through the center of Earth's shadow.

I'll probably drag my girlfriend to the top of a mountain to catch this tonight. Should be nice.

sounds like you're gonna be suffering a

hem

Every now and then
I get a little bit lonely
and you're never coming around
(Turnaround)
Every now and then
I get a little bit tired
of listening to the sound of my tears
(Turnaround)
Every now and then
I get a little bit nervous
that the best of all the years have gone by
(Turnaround)
Every now and then
I get a little bit terrified
and then I see the look in your eyes
(Turnaround bright eyes)
Every now and then I fall apart
(Turnaround bright eyes)
Every now and then I fall apart
(Turnaround)
Every now and then I get a little
bit restless and i dream of something wild
(Turnaround)
Every now and then I get a little bit
helpless and im lying like a child in your arms
(Turnaround)
Every now and then I get a little bit angry
and I know I have to get out and cry
(turnaround)
Every now and then I get a little bit terrified
but then I see the look in your eyes
(Turn around bright eyes)
Every now and then I fall apart
(Turn around bright eyes)
Every now and then I fall apart

And I need you now tonight
And I need you more than ever
And if you'll only hold me tight
We'll be holding on forever
And we'll only be making it right
Cause we'll never be wrong together
We can take it to the end of the line
Your love is like a shadow on me all of the time
I don't know what to do and I'm always in the dark
We're living in a powder keg and giving off sparks
I really need you tonight
Forever's gonna start tonight
Forever's gonna start tonight

Once upon a time I was falling in love
But now I'm only falling apart
There's nothing I can do
it's a
TOOOTAL ECLIPSE OF THE HEEEAAAAAAAAAART

There is no dark side of the moon really.
Matter of fact it's all dark.

A local weatherman here in Colorado didn't know the difference between lunar and solar eclipses. He said he was going to google it later.

That's the problem with northern winters -- ****ing clouds. :/  My skies are clear right now but the forecast says increasing clouds as the eclipse progresses.  Will wait and see what happens -- only about three hours to go now.

PS supposedly there will be a webcast of the eclipse here (http://www.ccssc.org/webcast.html), but I dunno where that is being hosted from.  Hopefully it's not clouded out there as well. :|a

It's nice and clear here, and the Moon is just about directly overhead.  We still have about an hour or so until we'll start seeing visible signs.  I don't know if I feel like hauling my reflecting telescope downstairs, but I'll at least take a look-see through binoculars.

i think the only reason it was even clear here was because it was too ****ing cold outside for any of the usual precipitation we normally get year round. if it were above freezing we would have been buried in rain clouds. were still to far north for it to go as dark as eclipses ive seen before. best one id say ive seen would be the one i saw in phoenix some years back. that moon was blood red. this is probibly the 3rd total lunar eclipse ive seen, i think next time il just stay inside where its warm.

I never really think of lunar eclipses having the same dimming effect as their solar counterparts, but it was amazing how dark it got outside last night as soon as totality hit.  I was even able to see a bit of the band of the Milky Way through my binoculars, which was pretty cool.  Unfortunately, our several-year-old digital camera wasn't nearly up to the task of taking a decent picture. :(

Yah, my pictures are no good due to cloud interference and my lack of a tripod.  :ick:  Still looked pretty to the eyes though.  Went on a drive through the countryside during totality and enjoyed the dull copper-lit scenery.
