It looks terrible...
I searched to the best of my ability (I don't really know what that background is called, background is kinda vague) but I didn't find anything.
Also, my mouse seems to be sluggish in the menu/game. It's very noticeable whenever I'm moving the mouse slowly because the cursor barely moves at all. I can't really explain it but perhaps someone who had this problem knows what I'm talking about?

Yeah that background sucks. I made one that's better you can get here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=72227.20). In fsport_mediavps create a folder named data, in that create a folder named effects and drop the file in there.
Don't know about the mouse. Have you tried increasing the sensitivity in the options screen?

I don't mean to offend you but I don't really like your version much either. Is there a way to completely get rid of it? It looks ridiculous, although yours does look a tad bit better.
Regarding the mouse problem, I did a search and found that it was a problem with the Logitech SetPoint drivers that came with my Logitech G500. I uninstalled it and the mouse works perfectly fine.

Jeez, to each their own I guess. Well, you could make one that is just 255 green (be sure to use the same color index) and that would be a transparent file and wouldn't show anything. I wouldn't advise it though because it would totally take the fun out of that mission.

It's an ASTEROID FIELD. What's the sense in having a highly dense asteroid field when there's no asteroids beyond the field? It's supposed to be IMMERSIVE. It's suppose to be an IMPROVEMENT. It's supposed to look like the field is bigger than the 10 cubic kilometers or whatever. The effect itself has even been upgraded! WHAT IS YOUR PROBLEM YOU GUYS.
-
Well...it does look really, really awful (at least in that shot above; I don't know if that's the improved version). I understand the intent, but while it's supposed to be immersive and an improvement, it doesn't work; it destroys immersion and doesn't improve.
I think if you want to tackle that issue you should use a skybox. Consider the asteroid field skybox from BtRL, which was excellent - try something like that.
I know it must be frustrating, but you simply can't ascribe any kind of agenda or malice to these complaints; they are straight reactions to the asset taken in context. It should probably be pulled or totally reworked.

I didn't really wanna keep on after you linked me the improved version, but I do agree, it's an eyesore for me, and draws my attention away from the actual mission, 'roid fields as a skybox are seriously hard to do right, the BtRL one is better still than the improved version of this one, but I'm /still/ not even a fan of that one, mostly, I think because in a situation where a 'real' 'roid field is used, these background ones are lifeless and low resolution, where as the models are high res and 'alive'(moving).
I think you'd be very hard pressed to find one that actually works, especially with a planet behind it, it makes it very......static?
Try not to take these comments as a criticism of yourselves, I applaud you for trying this, because it is ridiculously hard it hasn't worked though, at least not for me, not these attempts.. (sorry).

I full on agree. I think that retail background hits everybody in the face when they first start playing because it is so woefully out of place among all the beautiful surroundings. It was the subject of my first post (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=71129.0) that wasn't a support issue. My humble attempt was merely to provide an alternative until someone more talented addressed it or I figured out a better solution.
From the Skybox Wiki: (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/Skybox)
It is possible to create animated textures that will display flickering stars or random comets.
I read this and thought it might be possible to make a background that had some wobble and rotation to the asteroids. Unfortunately the wiki doesn't elaborate. You would have to be very conservative with it so there wouldn't be a performance hit but given the distance from the player they wouldn't have to move that much to break the static.

That isn't a retail background :P

I posted on this subject earlier. The background looked so ugly that I thought I was doing something wrong when I came across it in the port. :D
