Are there any Classic Battletech players out there who would like to do a bi-monthly game using the Java-based MegaMek client? I know there are some players in the community but not sure exactly who they are. It would be great to get a regular time up, twice a month or something so that others can come and go as they please. Thoughts?

PRESENT! :D
-
I'd like to try and give this a shot.
-
What days and times work for y'all?
-
Nothing until sometime after New Years, probably when the Spring semseter starts up around the 15th of Janurary.
Then, I'd be able to go late Monday nights, Wednesday evenings, and most of the weekend.
-
Scotty's times are fine for me. Too bad the last time I played BT was about 15 years ago when I was five or six so I have very little idea how to play. :ick: From what I've heard unlike Vassal40k the client does a lot of the work for everyone (ranges, movements, calculations) so if that's true I should be able to pick things up relatively quickly.
-
Yeah, MegaMek is pretty good as a client. It'll show you MP cost for a specific move, and you can think about it before committing, it spits out ranges, To-Hits for all targets, whether you have LOS for targets, resolves hits and damage automatically, and just about everything else that has to do with the dice.
Question: Which version would we be using?
-
Well, if it does pretty much everything, I should be good, I hope. If/when we get playing, you're probably going to have to treat me as a first-timer though, since it might as well be my first time, but chances are I'll pick things up quickly.
-
SpardaSon21: I haven't played in years either. You might want to check out some of the books. The four main books that deal with core rules are Total Warfare (the main rulebook used in tournaments), TechManual (all the rules for constructing everything), Tactical Operations (expanded rules for advanced weather, operations, etc.), and Strategic Operations (covering space operations complex planetary operations).
We'll probably just be using Total Warfare.
Scotty: I'm using the latest dev version 0.35.20.

Know anywhere I can get a .pdf version? I don't know any places where I can get a hardcopy edition, and I'm not to keen on buying one of those for something I likely won't be playing much. I don't exactly want to go out shopping any time soon, either.
-
Well, to be perfectly honest, if you're willing to get a session going before we actually start whatever kind of campaign we decide on, you could pick up the important stuff in no time at all. Book not strictly necessary, since most stuff gets done for you anyway (and we both know what we're doing).
-
Sure, sounds good. A few light games before anything too serious should help me get my feet under me.
-
My schedule is pretty open until 04 January. I'm going skiing for 2 days next week but other than that I'm wide open. A practice round or two would be good.
-
Ooooh, shiny. Sign me up as well. :D

I'm booked solid starting tomorrow and going until 02 Jan. Maybe we could get a game going the 3rd to show him the ropes?
-
That's the first Monday in Janurary, right? That sounds good.

There is the Introductory Rulebook (http://www.classicbattletech.com/downloads/CBT_Introductory_Rulebook.pdf) available for free from CBT.com (http://www.classicbattletech.com/index.php?action=downloads), if you want a refresher(not to be confused with the Quick Start rules).
To my understanding, it's the same book that you'd find in the Introductory Box Set. 'Mech combat "Level 1" rules and tech(where Total Warfare includes everything that's "tournament legal" including aerospace fighters, vehicles and more advanced weapons).
-
That actually raises an important question:
Is this just going to be a series of one-off battles, or are we looking to start an actual campaign with persistent characters and enemies?
-
How about we do some one-off battles to start, then decide if we want to do a campaign?
-
I'm in.
-
If you guys don't mind educating new players, I'd love to play. The extent of my battletech knowledge comes from Mechwarrior and Mechcommander. My next semester starts up on the 5th, and I'll be free most times up until then and friday thru sunday after.
-
What thesizzler says, except I've played it on two occasions when I was a teenager so my understanding of it is not entirely based on computer games... only almost :p If you don't want to be saddled with people who'll need hand-holding though, that's ok and I fully understand.
-
Considering they're going to need to hold my hand the first few games, I don't think that concerns them too much. :p
-
It's basically a game of luck with some tactical claptrap and statistics on it. But it can be fun.
-
I may or may not show up. I'm sort of burnt out on the existing BT continuity.

Oh, its nothing complicated, you point your 100-ton assault mech bristling with god knows how many weapons of death at something, you shoot and you win.
;)
I'd be up for some games as well.
-
I'd be happy to give it a swing. I'm always on IRC anyway, and a turn based game is just nice for passing time before bed or whatever.
-
Hai gais, I'm back and able to do this intro session whenever. We've got, what, five or six people for that?
-
I'm fine for doing it sometime tonight or this evening. Now is actually fine provided we get a couple people. I'm currently in HLP IRC actually. We're using MegaMek 0.35.20?
-
****, sorry I've been so out of touch with this. It's been crazy the last week with the holidays. I'm flying back down to college tomorrow and school starts Tuesday so I'm gonna be swamped until the weekend. However, how does an morning session on Saturday sound? I'm Mountain Standard Time (-7 GMT). I'm thinking sometime around 9AM but if other people's schedules/time zones don't work out we can choose another time.
-
If your looking for more Classic Battletech players you might check out Mektek (http://www.mektek.net/ (http://(http://www.mektek.net/)), Mechwarrior Living Legends (http://www.mechlivinglegends.net/ (http://www.mechlivinglegends.net/)), and The Net Battle Tech System (http://www.netbattletech.com/ (http://www.netbattletech.com/)).
I'm not into Classic Battletech myself but you might find more players at the sites I've listed.

Oh wow that's comparatively early for me. I blame vacation. I can try to make a 10 AM calltime, but that's going to play merry hell with my accustomed weekend sleep schedule. :P

I won't be able to make a 9AM MST game. That would be 8AM over here on the West Coast, and there's no way I could make that. 10AM your time is pushing it too. 11 or 12 would be better.
-
I can do anytime really. How bout noon MST?
-
Sounds good.
-
The game is hopefully in about an hour, so is there any way for us to get together and set this up?
-
Anyone with a good connection want to volunteer to host? All you need to connect is an IP and port number (and the correct version of MM. Are we using .20 or .21?). For simplicity's sake, we can use the default port, so we just need the host's IP to connect.
-
I can't host as I have a NAT router, so either you or dANGER boy will have to do it, or any of the other people who said they wanted to play.
-
I can try, since this connection is.... kinda decent, I guess. If it doesn't work, dANGER boy will have to try.
Host address: 74.243.19.35
Port: 2346
I'll be there as Dragoon. Pick a callsign and join when you can.
-
Is it not working?
Nobody's showed up yet. :doubt:
-
Sorry, I've been distracted. What version are you using?
-
Sorry, have been also. Using .20 since that's been out slightly longer.
-
Okay. I'm using 0.35.20 as well, so I'll try to connect real soon.
EDIT: I'm trying to connect and MegaMek says it can't. Are you currently hosting, Scotty? Meet me in the HLP IRC channel if/when you are.
