Title: FSF tries texturing, needs feedback
Post by: FreeSpaceFreak on December 25, 2010, 08:13:24 am
Well, what the title says. You know the feeling that, when you're working on something, you get immersed and can't really judge your work objectively anymore?
I have the idea that it's missing something, but can't quite tell what or where.
(Yeah, only the upper surface is done so far.)

looks good so far. Needs more dirt, scratches and weathering. And maybe an AO.

Needs more actual diffuse detail before it can be called more than 'plate-y' or 'plan'

Don't get me wrong, it's not bad so far. It's just dull.

So, the thread is finally up! Yaaay!  :p

Nice suggestion, Angelus. It would add more detail for sure. However, aging effects like that aren't necessary for this fighter.  It is a post-Capella fighter, so seeing as its rather new, it won't be needing it.

Needs some glowing parts. Like the ones on the Herc II. IMO at least.

As well as various panels, stripes, etc.

What's the res on that texture?

I think random glowing bits are ugly and kinda pointless (on Terran ships). I'd leave that to glow points.

12000567 X 3567800023 but it looks cool

Seen the Herc II? It has a glowpoint on the glowing bits. And if done well, they can look good. Plus, it would look rather boring without them. More so: most, if not all, terran fighters/bombers have such bits.

Glowing bits placed selectively can look good, but when overdone stupidly like on the Pegasus or Ares, I dunno. Even canon ships can be ugly, you know.

Apollo, Athena, Myrmidon, Artimes each don't have these glowy bits, and a lack of random arbitrary glowy crap doesn't make it boring, a lack of detail does. Not only that, the random glowy bits are extremely unrealistic.

Glowing bits placed selectively can look good, but when overdone stupidly like on the Pegasus or Ares, I dunno. Even canon ships can be ugly, you know.
Funny how the Pegasus is a stealth ship and has close to the most glows of any fighter.

Agreed there. And if the texture part for them is done well.

Even canon ships can be ugly, you know.

Excuse me? ALL canon ships are ugly, that's the incomparable beauty of FS.  :mad2:

You're pretty right... That's the best way to shout : Hey Shivans, I'm here, catch me if you can  ;) ♪♪♫♫Nanananere♪♫♫

EDIT : Oh, and BTW FSF : Niiiiice work, especially for the cockpit

4096^2, so yes, it won't be looking like this in-game for the coming few years :D

Oh, and BTW FSF : Niiiiice work, especially for the cockpit
Heh, I ripped the cockpit from the Loki, I think it's Vasudan Admiral who made it :P

The ship's already got glowpoints, I'll add some glowy bits around those. And okay, further detailing, less platey, I see what you mean.

I'm curious as to what the ship model is, the texture looks good but I'm wondering what it is that's getting these textures.

Oh the Thor. I was never too keen on the shape, but the plated appearance is fitting for it.

I like the direction this thing is going.  I agree with some people here that currently it has a lot of plates.  But plates aren't bad. Roughly rectangular plates are bad.  Plates drawn to accentuate the base model design and smaller, complex details are good.  So try adding some irregular geometric shapes.  Trapezoids and rhombi are good, it's just they're better when they're long and narrow.  Also, remember that you'll have the heightmap to play with.

So far I approve of the direction this is taking.  I think you've done a pretty fine job.  I especially like the rescue arrow.

Yup -- It's the Thor, Zane. At least that was its original name -- For some reason, it had to be renamed. So now, it's known as the GTF Durandal.

You might as well consider a "dirtier" version.

I'd say there need to be more logical connections. The missle launcher for example, looks as if someone had just cut a hull into the armor. You could add a border around the hole. The cocpit looks glued on. Make a connection between the glass and the hull.

The plates look like they came right out of the factory. Smooth, no scratches  no dents, no dirt. You could add some kind of wavy structure, that comes from constant heating and cooling in space. Like paper that got wet. I see, that you added some abrasion of the paint, but that's just at the borders of the plates. The whole surface needs some kind of structure. Unless you dont' want it that way, of course. But i think, that even after just a few sorties some structure would appear there.

... de bump. I'm beginning to think that the more fluent lines of the mesh just don't combine well with the industrial texture look I'm going for...

Yikes, I almost forgot about this one.  :ick:

I intend to have this released publically -- Was meant to do it a week or two ago in fact, but got caught up in other projects.
All the necessary tabling, testing and all that has been done. Just need to make some final tweaks and she's ready to go.

Alright -- it's been uploaded to FreeSpaceMods. Just awaiting the approval process to be conducted. I'll create a new thread for the Durandal when she is ready for grabs.

Anyone who wishes to make an FSWiki page on the Durandal when it is available has my blessing.

GenericShield.ani? :ick:

It takes about 60 seconds to do a decent one in Paint Shop Pro. :p

OK, quick review:

Visually, it's pretty decent, reasonably freespacey, but unique at the same time. Fits well in its intended timeframe though (several years post capella, I believe?). Also,m the sort of "two storey" design - I remember being initially sceptical of it when I first saw the untextured mesh, but once textured it really works quite well, so kudos there. Personally, I would dump the blue glowpoints, makes it seem like it's being lit up like a christmas tree. :p To fly it's unremarkable - not in a bad sense, more like it doesn't seem to excel at anything, more of an all around beast - decent boost off the afterburner is nice though.

I wasn't a fan of the weapons placement, I must admit - if it'd been me, I'd have put the primaries where the secondaries are, and the secondaries where the primaries are, but obviously that's not really an option with the modelled missiles there. To compensate, I think I'd have changed the missile system a bit, convert the current 80:80 setup to a 60:100 setup, or even a 50:110 setup, to give the player one massive bank for Tempests (as a primary dogfighting weapon), a smaller bank for, say, harpoons, and then freed the primaries up to have Maxims in them. It would make it great for going up against capital ships, whilst retaining some dogfight capacity - kinda the way Artemises were used in WiH. Actually, this feels a lot like an atermis - touch more manoeuvrable maybe, and nicer afterburner, but otherwise very similar.

Thanks for the feedback and shield icon, Black Wolf. Both of those are much appreciated. Indeed, it could use a few adjustments so to speak.  :)

If no-one objects, I'll make a quick update to the Durandal, incorporating the suggested secondary capacities and shield icon. From there, the new thread can be made once its approved.

Edit: Hmmm, ok -- Gives me access denied when I try to upload the updated Durandal archive. Anyone know what's the deal?
