There's been a surge in image sigs since the forum upgrade. For the new members who've only joined recently, you need to know that these are frowned upon, and will be disallowed eventually again. For those of you who've been here while, you should know better. So can we do a little bit of self-regulation and stick to the old rules unil the admins can get around to reimplementing the old controls?
-
I believe certain admins have also threatened to do horrible things indeed to those experienced members who know the rules yet choose to flaunt them during this window of opportunity. So, use those sigs at your own risk.
-
I'll quote karajorma on that one:
Yeah, those members are on karas watchlist, for this crime. :P
It appears that some people are using a server that is blocked in China for image sigs. The result is that I can't see them.
If the sigs bother you though just report the user and anvils will drop on them from a great height.
Enjoy your sigs folks, they wont last long. :P
-
The guidelines don't say anything about sig pics. :p
Seriously, removing those pics would show some common sense.
-
I actually haven't seen any...
-
Hem... Personnaly, I think that customized (and unreadable) fonts are more disturbing :drevil:
-
Okay, I've disabled the [img] and [lvlshot] tags in signatures. It should no longer be possible to include images.
-
Unreadable fonts are worse.
-
Patience.
-
Neg, they are still visible on some users.
-
Ok, I'm done with colors. I'll use them only at the beginning of my release threads*, if there will ever be any.
*and my signature, of course.

Images in signatures? If so, provide a link.

that's the first post of yours I've been able to read in forever

For the same reason the guidelines don't say anything about reaching through the wires to slap people who say something stupid.
Until recently image sigs were turned off. Now they are allowed by the theme but not by the admins. Consider this the final warning I'm giving on the subject.
-
Just one thing I'd like to mention is that the signature images aren't allowed, because they'd sidetrack you from the postings, but large signature, in height, also sidetrack imensely. So this nice scrollbar feature for the sig would help to solve that problem as well. :)

As it happens, HLP had exactly that until the emergency upgrade - And before that was implemented, overly huge sigs were often trimmed down by force if the owners refused to shorten them. So, chances are good you'll see it back when Sandwich gets the new theme into place.
-
The scrolling sigs was removed because as you scrolled down the page to read, when the mouse was over a scrolling sig only the sig would scroll, so it made reading a pain in the balls.

Incorrect. Scrolling sigs were removed because they are part of the forum theme, and since the forums are still using SMF default you're not seeing it. You can also avoid the scrolling issue if you keep your mouse cursor to left or right side of posts.
Images on sigs have been prevented by other measures new to SMF 2.0, which do not require changes to forum theme like what was done in SMF 1.1.
-
Can you prevent the length of sigs in the future? The scrolling issue was always going on my nerves, i really don't want to have that back. If people feel to make giant sigs, they should start a website to post that crap. The number of people reading it, will stay exactly the same by that : NONE :wtf:
-
Yes, SMF 2.0 allows enforcing both character limit and number of lines to old and new sigs alike. Karajorma already proposed limiting sig lines to 3, but a lot of people have much more than that, even Goober. Characters isn't reliable in controlling sig lengths because bbc tags and urls can take up a lot of space, lines on the other hand can be difficult to find a good compromise on.
-
Well, if you can, then I suggest to limit the (displayed ?) lines, because you are right that URL's can take quite some space.
Take my sig for instance. It's fine to me and I think the length is acceptable, but I wouldn't cry If I had to remove one line. Posting some sort of advertising of your project is the best usage of the sig. The other stuff is not really necessary.
On the other hand, I do not know how it turns out technically. Are huge sigs bad for the page buildup time ? Also I think I've seen another forum, where you can simply turn a switch in your user profile and no ones sig is displayed for you.
To be honest, I really don't care about people sigs. If they are too long, it disturbs your reading flow (because I wanna read posts, not sigs), the only thing that I disliked is the scrolling problem, that was a bad solution IMO (and honestly, no one will have scrolled down the sigs on purpose just to read it, right ? :) ). Of course it's nearly impossible to make everyone happy, but it's an admins call in that :)
-
As on the other forum you saw, you can disable sigs on HLP.
-
Oh great :) Problem solved for me :)

Which I by the way do, the forums are much cleaner to read without sigs popping up everywhere.
-
Seconded, I also deactivated them now :) BTW Fury, even if unrelated to this thread here, pls take a look on the hosted support forum and add my new member. That would be appreciated :)
