The Flyby sound on primaries thread made me remember that we totally need this too. Impact sound only works when a shot hits the hull. If it hits the shield it will always play the default shield impact sound effect.
Which produces less than impressive results at times (For example, firing a DRG-1LI missile which then explodes in a mighty 'bzzt' :blah: )
So I'd like to request $ImpactSnd: for shields

Rather, it should be something like $ShieldImpactSnd: , set per weapon (if that was what you were talking about, then sorry, but at least for me, it isn't 100% clear).
That would indeed be usefull.

Also, I found a strange reversal of the situation, beams with "no pierce shields" set will always make their impact sound, even when hitting the shield.
I think it should be fixed too.

Same as with Flyby sounds, posting this in Hosted Projects Collaboration could get you more attention.
