After rediscovering this amazing game, I remembered how obsessed I was with it originally (I played the FS1 demo to death, I think Hornet missiles were the thing that first made me fall in love with the game). One outcome of all that, besides the Tango mini-campaign, was a sort of "strategy guide" document. Turns out I still had a copy saved somewhere. For what it's worth, I've re-posted it online. Could be useful for FS n00bs, amusing reading for veterans maybe. Among other things, it contains info about all the ships and their possible loadouts.
SPOILER WARNING! If you haven't played through the original Freespace, I suppose there are some spoilers in the document, since it talks about all the ships and weapons.

Thanks for reading.

Thanks Julian. Perhaps you should add your comments for the fighters in the wiki.

Oh wow. Old-school.

It's good, some things I don't recall though... is it really possible to hit your own missiles if you fire while on afterburner?.. I've always fired my missiles on afterburner when possible and I never got hit doing that, IIRC the only warhead I was hit with while flying (and for which I wasn't it's target) was a Helios torpedo :(
-
This mechanism must have been removed from the FreeSpace 2 code, so it's not in FreeSpace 2 or the Port.
-
If you fire without lock, you can still get hit.
It must be caused by the same thing which makes missiles much more usefull in FS2.

It's never happened to me. The only thing I can think of is if the missiles reach their maximum range and detonate while you're near them.

Tsk tsk, recommending a Medusa over an Ursa :o
-
oh yeah, being hit by a Helios in the middle of a long escort mission... that sucks pretty bad.
I shall remember that forever.

At least the Medusa can do half a turn in less than a quarter or millennium.
