Title: Best mods redux (split from RELEASE: Tango)
Post by: LoneWolf5050 on December 31, 2010, 01:34:22 am
While slowly replaying FS1, I have also dug up some old Freespace files and the Tango mission files and poked around.  Some people commented on the storyline...just FYI, there are several different endings possible, well not completely different endings, but there's many parts of the debriefing that are condition dependent.  I think there's a possible medal too.

I have a feeling I will need to make another mission or two once I'm doing playing through FS1, Operation Templar, Silent Threat: Reborn (looking forward to that one!), and FS2.  So it might be a while.  But anyway...the Campaign List in the wiki shows some monumental work!  Campaigns of 20, 30, 40+ missions.  Does anyone release single missions these days?  And what campaigns are the best examples of the state of the art in the community?  I've read some references to Blue Planet, and also total conversions like BTRL of course.  What is the gold-standard, native Freespace content that I should check out?

Thanks!

Blue Planet (2) and Vassago's Dirge are pretty much the most "modern" campaigns that currently exist. I heard Wings of Dawn is pretty good too.
ST:R is more traditional-FS, but equally enjoyable.

Grab Blue Planet, the character driven storylines aren't everyone's cup of tea, but it's a very well put together pair of campaigns, especially the second one. Vassago's dirge, Windmills and Transcend are some more unconventional (but very good) campaigns. For more standard freespace fare, grab Silent Threat : Reborn and the Procyon Insurgency. There are plenty of other good ones, but those'll get you started.

play transcend, blue planet 1+2, wings of dawn, vassago's dirge, silent threat reborn

derelict when it gets fixed

pi can be a good time, but it's bastard hard and the story is a copypaste of fs2's

The story was still well-presented though. Very atmospheric in some parts.

Ancient-Shivan War! High quality mod with unique storyline, atmosphere, awesome music and pretty new stuff :). This mod tells story about war of the Ancients and Shivans, 8000 years ago.

Overdone imho. I can't like the protagonists, and keep sheering up for the enemy, which isn't a nice thing to do when you must destroy them...

ASW's storyline and fredding didn't draw me in at first. I've yet to play it. I definitely have to get round to it sometime.

For the atmosphere alone, I'd recommend ASW. Okay, its storyline is rather simple, but remember: this is only the first act, the primer.

And it's not a difficult campaign, either.

I would steer clear from ASW for now. I got three missions and quit because it was so dull.

You don't like many things.

LoneWolf5050 can try ASW and see if he likes it.

Yeah that's fair. I withdraw my point, it was out of order.

You get tons of campaigns to choose from. Check the wiki for the links. There's a short description of each campaign and links to download and forums about it.

That way you can poke around a bit before you actually try anything. Asking which one is the best is kinda useless. Everyone got their own favorites (or vested interest in telling you X is the best)

You've got several "big" names, with a whole team of people working on a campaign and you got 1-man projects (and a few projects that are somewhere in between). Pick your poison.

I didn't really mind the character stuff, it was the religious drivel that I found off-putting -- The whole "Ubuntu" stuff. It's way too prominent, given the fact it it only influences a few missions, like the missions where you escort some "elders".

It almost balanced out since Blue Planet 2 had a mission where I could actually fly a capital ship!  :D

Note my use of the word "almost" because I's still hatin', yo!

It would have taken one minute of reading in the techroom to see that Ubuntu is a secular ideology built on scientific research and regulated capitalism. The religious affiliation of individual Ubuntu citizens or the Elders themselves is very much up to them.

But I guess reading is hard when you're a true believer.

Didn't read techroom, sorry. Also, no need for the "true believer" crap. I just didn't find it very appealing.

Ignore it. And blow. ****. UP.

You can skip all the dialogue and fiction viewer texts if you want to and still have a great time getting Slammer multi-kills on Artemis wings in WiH.

There's also links to every campaign on the wiki and then some in the "Released Campaigns Thread" stickied at the top of the board. ;7

/shameless plug.

Everyone mentions BP, Transcend, ASW, and VD...

What about Crossing the Styx?  I rather enjoyed it.  And you can't really go wrong with Derelict.

I have heard that both Crossing the Styx and Uncharted Territory are excellent but for some reason they just haven't taken off. I dunno  :blah:

CtS has a bit of Transcend syndrome in the second half though. (uneventful noderunning)

Maybe this is just me, but I really enjoyed the Relentless campaign. Currently, it does have a showstopper bug in the end mission
Spoiler:
when you've lost your jump drive and have arrived at earth
though.

I would strongly anti-endorse this campaign. You can win it by pressing Alt-J on every single mission since it has no failure conditions in its campaign file.

Add the need to eliminate dozens of hostiles to the equation, too. What CtS needs is a remake, with different fighting style.

Well then stop trying to kill yourself? This didn't impact my experience the first time, and it didn't impact it the second time. It's so sad to see people nitpicking for the sake of nitpicking.

There are a lot of things wrong with Relentless which are definitely not nitpicks. While individual experiences will vary, anyone who declares it pretty dicey has good reason to do so.

I think Nuclear1 was being facetious, and he meant to imply that Relentless's critical bug was that it was so bad, it had a tendency to induce suicides.

Sorry Nuclear1, I had no choice but to explain the joke. :nervous:
