Title: Hi all - newb here.

Hi everyone.  I found out about FreeSpace through a post on Reddit.

I've been in computers for a long time (first machine was a TI99/4A, using a 300 baud acoustic telephone coupler modem), but never heard of FreeSpace!  The last space sim I did was the old Wing Commander series of games.

I've downloaded FS2 from GOG, and right now I'm installing FSopen, which I discovered thanks to the Wiki.

I just discovered the default throttle control is why my HOTAS Saitek X45 is not working - can't wait to sort that out and have a throttle.

Looking forward to playing this game.  I'm really stoked about the upcoming Battlestar Galactica version.  I heard there was one (beyond the red line) but it petered out and is now Diasphora or something like that but is not done yet.

Methinks you should get familiar with the Retail first before going to the mods.

Diaspora (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?board=175.0). We've not released yet but we're working on it. In the meanwhile have a look at the eye candy and trailers (check the dev blog (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?board=182.0) for links to those)

You should also install the media VP files. They are like a mod but only update the graphics without altering canon. Then you can play the campaign. Then try some other mods.

Stuff to download:

FS Open 3.6.12 or newer
Mediavps 3.6.12
FSPort, check which version works with Mediavps 3.6.12
Silent Threat Reborn.

Then you should do the FS 1 campaign (under the mod FSPort), Silent Threat Reborn and the FS 2 campaign to go through the canon stuff.
Then come back for a list of mods. :tongue:

P.S. I'd write a welcome speech, but I don't have any good ideas right now. Maybe later.

Just follow all hints posted by the others. As Marcov say, master the retail version before trying any mods. I recommend BengalTiger's short list: FSPort, Silent Threat: Reborn (it's way better than the original Silent Threat by :v:) and, of course, FreeSpace 2. :)

If you'll want a good continuation after you finish FS2, I recommend Blue Planet.
