Title: Ship Design
Post by: Drogoth on January 06, 2011, 10:39:10 am
Well since the original thread was just hijacked by little children,

returning to the original topic, what's everyones opinions on ships, favorite designs, etc.

Personally, my favorite is the Orion for its ability to project power, in  Terran fashion of course.

Also, I've always wondered, am I just weird, or do other people find the Sathanas to be stupid looking? Don't get me wrong, the ship was bad ass, but i never liked the huge claws. Ditto for the Ravana. Parts stuck out to far, and in the case of Ravana looked kind of chaotic

Fenris/Lev is still my fave design in the game

Personally I love the claws and weird hull forms on the shivs they give them that sense they they were built by a completely alien mindset which follows a different logic to ours

Orion is also cool cause is a big old lump that wont budge unless it wants to and will bite your head off it you try to move it

Not sure, I love many of V's designs.
Does it have to be a cap ship? or can I choose a fighter as well?

Shoot, idc. Any ship.

For example I thought the Valk looked excellent, I hated the Herc II.

Loved the Aten for design, but the aten was a total piece militarily.

I definitely agree, it made them feel a little too bug-like.

As for what I like? I'm not sure on my favorite, but I do have favorites for each class for each race (except for classes with one ship, like the corvette class, etc)
Apollo, Horus, Dragon
Medusa, Amun (not really sure about Shivans)
Scarab.
Azrael.
Chronos, Ma'at (if only because of the concept art being super ****ing awesome), and Mephisto .
Fenris, Aten, Cain
Deimos
Orion, Typhon, and Lucifer
Both juggernauts just ****ing suck
GTI Arcadia.

3 of each:

+Mara
+Seraphin
+Azrael

+Aeolus
+Mjolnir
+Medusa

+Sobek
+Typhon
+Hatshesput

The Typhon in top three? It's just a... a... a thing. Not boxy, not round, not sucky, not powerful, not nothing xD

In terms of firepower, my favourites are Vacuum cleaner, Baseball bat and Ravana, in tearms of beauty again Hattie, Hades and again Ravie.

Droid's upgrade doesn't ;)

It doesn't make that much sense though. You gotta come up with some explanation as to how they managed to fit massive beam emitters on the engines :P (they really do help its turret coverage though).
Title: Re: Ship Design
Post by: asyikarea51 on January 06, 2011, 01:02:57 pm
Droid's Hecate = aim for the forward beams and get roasted by Flak, and watch the side beams "conveniently copypasted at the sides" :p :nervous: fry its own fancy wing attachments XD

Really not a lot of sense at all on placement, but hey, better an asset than no asset...

Not so sure on capitals for faves...

Apollo (but the missile ports suck), Loki, Hercules I, Zeus, Ursa, Medusa (I mistook it for a fighter initially), Orion (if only because of Derelict IIRC)
Seth

Favorite:
Fighter: GTF Valkyrie  - It's 24th century WWII style!
Bomber: GTB Medusa - Some reason
Cruiser: GTC Aeolus   - Because of its role in the FS2 demo, I always saved the Adament
Corvette: GTC Deimos - Terran bricks of death, REBORN
Destroyer: GTD Orion - The original Terran brick of death

Vasudan ships always looked disturbingly fragile to me, and Shivan ships look ugly (in an intentional, artistic way)

The wing attachments problem can be fixed if i get it right, by
Code: [Select]
$force beam turrets to use normal fov: Yes in -aip and setting proper FOV in -shp.

If we were to include mods into this, then my fav is probably the Saturn from PI, even though Vexor is not far behind.

FS1 Terran fighters and bombers in general always looked more functional and realistic then FS2 strikcraft, the Herc specifically is my favorite.  It looks the business.

that and the Ursa have the sledgehammer look to go with their roles don't they

The best bomber in my opinion is the Sekkie (but it's kinda ugly). I fell in love with +2 cannons compared to the boanerges when you run out of bombs.

Sekhmet flies like a fat Herc, and can actually dogfight somewhat.

The Boanerges gets all of my hatred. ALL OF IT. Worst deathtrap of a bomber, ever. Of all time.

Uh, guys. Ship design isn't based off of the way it flies, shoots, or dies. It's based off of its appearance. :P

I actually love the design of the Hecate. I don't now why everyone likes the Orion so much to be honest; I guess I just never really got the 'block of rock' thing that everyone likes to say here. It never looked particularily powerful to me. Meanwhile on the Hecate, everything is inflated in a way; sorta like that Typhoon/Hurricane thingamagig that got released recently. The engines, the turrets, everything is almost cartoonishly bulging with power. If only it wasn't tabled to be ****E.

I like many FS1 designs. The Apollo, Valkyrie, Athena, Herc 1, Fenris, Aten, Anubis, Seth, Dragon, Scorpion, Lilith and Lucifer come to mind. Especially the Apollo and Scorpion. The Scorpion just looks so frighteningly alien.

Of FS2 designs, I hate the Herc 2. Despise it. I also hate the Pegasus, although that's probably more a symptom of playing Transcend than anything else, but I do like the Perseus. And Moloch.

The Hecate honestly looks like a made-from-scrap randomly assorted ship, it doesn't look intimidating at all, it just looks like a fat, blown-up-like-a-balloon target to shoot, it even has bull eyes on the front!

Why does it look like a scrapyard heap? Because it looks like it's made out of sections which don't even go along with each other it's got elephant ears, fins, a skull, and some random lego blocks for engines, it's ugly, at least IMO.

I never really liked the Orion for a while either, but it grew on me over time, don't know why, maybe the HTL model.
Anyway, fav ship is definitely the Lucifer.

Too much but IMO :p

At first look Shivan ships might be scary. But they're really more of abominable insects and pointy critters if you observe carefully.

I think my favorite ship would be the Orion, and then Ravana.

Orion for its fortress-like shape and Ravana for its rather scary appearance (but it does look just like another franken-critter).

Favorite Capital Ship:  GTD Orion and PVD Hatsepshut

Favorite Bomber: GVB Sekhmet

Well for me I don't like it much. Looks like a salvaged Nahema or something :( (Come to think of it, isn't it strange that the HoL already had something that looks like the Nahema when the SB Nahema was encountered only in 2367?)
And even the Nahema I don't really like to see. It looks like a bloated monster. Following your format,

Favorite Capship: GTD Orion ONLY (it's a classic space skyscraper), and SD Ravana as a second
Favorite Corvette: I somehow prefer the GTCv Deimos over the Sobek. Moloch falls in the last of the three, but I don't think the Moloch looks bad either.
Fav. Cruiser: GTC Aeolus. The other two Terran cruisers look too bloated (well, maybe they're okay as gunships)
Fav. Non-Combat ship: GVFr Satis, if it weren't flying upside-down :(
Fav. Fighter: SF Astaroth (it looks like a fierce bat, and is the most fearsome-looking Shivan strikecraft. It's easy to kill, but looks can scare you off the logic :) )
Fav. Bomber: GVB Bakha - its smooth shape looks makes it look like it's designed for elite pilots to fly on the most dangerous missions, as excellently portrayed in Bearbaiting. Though I'd rather fly an Ursa in that mission.

Hmm, aesthetically, I like :

Bombers :       Nahema/Sekhmet, Seraphim, Zeus, Bakha

Cruisers :        Aeolus, Mentu, Aten, MVP Lilith

Corvettes :     Moloch

Destroyers :   Ravana, Demon, Hatshepsut

OMG ships :    Hades, Sathanas

Others :          Hygeia, Nephthys, Mjolnir, Isis, Ma'at

The Dragon is a fighter that truly deserves the attention of a skilled modeler. What was done to the Ulysses should happen to the most terrifying fighter of the great war.

Hm...

I do like the Hecate aestheticly..It's just a poor design functionally. With better textures and a table-fix job some of hte issues cna be solves.

But yes, Orion is better, since it has both.

I actually really like the cain/lilith design. Something about it just makes it seem more alien/insect-like. The three arms are pretty much the main feature of it, and other than that it's so simple and meek. But then it starts shooting at you...

Hmm, so many opinions. I'll keep to FS1&2 ships simply cause Ive only played 8 Mods.
I generally find it hard to choose 1 single ship for each class though :(.

Overall, based on design and performance. (and personal preference. duh)

Fighter: (probably) GTF Ulysses
Bomber: GTB Medusa
Cruiser: GTC Aeolus - its flak has been growing on me lately.
Corvette: GTCv Deimos
Destroyer: GTD Orion - I never quite liked the 'brick' like appearence, but it did grow on me a bit. The appearance of an Orion, did bring me alot of pride (being in the GTA and GTVA and all :D)

(Obvious that Im a Terran kinda guy?)

Going to regret naming the Ulysses later, Im no good at choosing a favorite fighter.

As for odd looking ships, I think that the Cannon-ships. However odd (not naming..., GTD Hecate). They looked apart of the GTA/GTVA development line, Im still not quite used to the GTD Raynor yet (probably cause Ive only played one mod with it). The colour seemed a bit light, and most GT ships are build more upwards, it was more flat...

Vasudan ships, I find slightly more interesting with their designs. They seem really odd, but a little graceful sometimes. (sometimes)

Shivan vessels, perfect enemy. I did enjoy the the colour scheme that was used, the blacks and reds. And the designs for a first time player proved distracting, unknown and hostile. Though I thought the beams were a bit to evil red, they do hurt...

Anyway, (please) ignore my opinions cause im a noob :D.

The Faustus is certainly the best looking non-combat ship.  It's also quite capable of defending itself if it's upgraded from the default blob blasters, there are 4 aft and 2 forward and very well placed for excellent coverage.  I also believe it's a tiny bit more durable than the Fenris.

No, the Faustus only has 3000 HP while the Fenris has 10000 (8000 in FS1).
