YES! **** YES THERE IS CONTRAST.

I would just like to note that everyone's signatures look hilariously awful now.

Where the hell has the reply button gone- ihadtoquote? I'm seeing the "smartphone widescreen" variant if it makes any difference.

MY BEAUTIFUL MARGINS! NOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooooo! :(
Well, at least my eyes have stopped bleeding. :P
-
Sweeet. However I think some kind of more noticeable division between posts would be welcome.
Withdrawn, didn't see that little newsbox, sorry.

Eww, the colours in quotes are still whiter than Michael Jackson.

It's back! :wakka:

Yay, no more sunglasses!
Seriously, my eyes thank you.
-
looks nice.
-
Immediately went back to the default format since everything's all bunched together, so I can't read anything because my eyes jump around between all the different words everywhere, so I can't pick out a cohesive sentnce. :P Otherwise it looks AWESOME.
-
Read between "Re:" and the long line, and it will start to look coherent.
-
Oooooooooo, pretty
-
Brown, it's like quake 1 all over again
-
Bank Gothic font ftw.
Looks good, except the boards look like ass with baby blue text on maroon backgrounds.
-
Is it just me... or is the thread list really hard to read with the greyish-blue font on red background?
-
I approve this theme.
-
OH NOUSSS!!!
didn't you just read, don't complain until the final version is here!
:beamz:
-
Is it just me... or is the thread list really hard to read with the greyish-blue font on red background?
It's possible to change it back until everything is covered. Things are looking really nice so far, but I still think I'm going to stick with smf default until post separation is added.

Quoting my own posts in this topic (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=73595.20):
So, no image sigs, no avatars, no colors... why don't we go back to a mailing list system and be done with it?
I have visual impairments and have to fully zoom the page to read, with a lot of effort, and I believe small avatars (even as small as 50x50) would improve accessibility A LOT. I usually don't even bother reading who posted what until I find a post interesting, which is not really a good procedure, but it saves me from a daily headache. Seriously, at least small avatars or small image sigs would improve accessibility for some of us.
Just my two cents.
The problem is, usually the name column doesn't even fits in the screen after zooming or using the text size feature, so I have to scroll, read, scroll, read, scroll... with an image, it would be easier and quicker to identify who's who.
While I'm at it, the ability to select between two different high contrast themes would also benefit a lot of people. The old theme was actually quite useful for me, as white text over dark background is easier for me to read. Some people need exactly the opposite, though.
Quote from: The E on December 29, 2010, 01:47:52 pm
In addition, instead of avatars, we have badges, (which got temporarily disabled, but will be back once the theme gets reinstated), which are just as useful in terms of identifying users (At least I ID people more by their badge collection than anything else).
Yes, badges are also very helpful.
I want to report that the text size feature now works fine (at least in Firefox), and my eyes are quite happy with the dark theme. And I want to thank whoever crafted this new theme for addressing my concerns. Really, thank you. :D

It's still a work in progress.
And I like it. I like that quotes are in an offset color, much like the old "alternating" post color. Code tags need some work though. Black background for the current text color, or black text would be a good idea. (I'm more for a black background on code tags)
Forum body background being a different color would also be nice, all the gray being unbroken is kind of depressing (especially when viewing post pages).
I _love_ the pop-up on hover on a post for the post options, though I imagine several users might not. Making that a per-user flexible option (if possible) would be an awesome compromise.
User options for the font size (small, medium (which could be the current size) and large) would be good. (Personally, I'd call the current one large, but I know not everybody does things the way I do, most of my font's in windows are set to 8pt because anything else is just uncomfortably large).
And I hope that we see a return of the user-info box being a different color than the post box. I could care less if we see alternating post backgrounds, to be honest as the current layout lends nicely to a "We've Upgraded" look and posts can be easily more separated by having the user-info box being the "HLP Red" color.
EDIT: In case anybody wanted an example of what I meant:

For the record, I kind of liked the slight red tinge at the top of each post that happened earlier this afternoon. Broke up the gray.
But, WIP, looking good.
-
So far it's looking better than the original.

And I _hate_ it. It reminds me of the "cute" but asinine things Google has done to its interface over the past several months. Each change has been infuriating, even more so because they have not provided the option to disable it (save for the background image). I have several GreaseMonkey scripts installed specifically to restore the original behavior.
So an option to toggle this behavior would be highly appreciated. Fortunately, HLP is a bit more accommodating than Google. :)

Heh. I use Stylish myself to reformat and take advantage of moz-rendering (rounded corners, semi-transparency, highlight and shadows).
Though, I do agree, Google could go a long way in making many of their changes more optional/user-selectable, rather than uniformly asserting them. Glad to hear we (of the HLP) are more accommodating than that. (Because I happy to love how clean everything looks having the post options as pop-ins/ups/whatevers)

Superb job with the theme, even unfinished as it is  My eyes rejoice :)
-
Mine as well. Love the maroon quote-boxes. :)
edit: Omg, if you click the "..." in the page selector in a long thread, it expands the list to show all pages. I don't know if that's new or if I just never noticed before, but it's awesome.

Let's try it!
/me creates the attached image.
Uh, HELP!
-
Ahh, an attachment! Wonderful, now I can style that code. :)
-
Glad I was of help there, despite it being accidental at best. :)
-
The one thing I've never really understood about the whole SMF layout is why there are nice big links for the previous and next thread, which you're just about never going to use, but nothing corresponding to move to the previous/next page of a thread, which would be far handier. If there's some sort of tweak that could enable that, I'd love you long time.

See this one.
In making this post, I discovered something else. Used to be when you hit "Reply" you could still scroll the list of previous posts and pick ones to quote. Can't do that now.
-
Locked, non-stickied topic bars are showing up as a pure, eye-burning white for me, like it's mixing the old and new themes. Anyone else run into this?

Confirmed (obviously, you did say fixed). Yay!

On the topic of fixing Eye-burning white, are code boxes next on the list, pretty please?
-
And as a minor addition, the profile options drop-boxes are the eye-burning white as well, but that's not really significant.
-
The orange news bar. I want to eat it.
-
Looks nice. Weird quotes though.
-
[code.] tags are kinda hard to read. It's like light grey on lighter grey.
-
Loving the new theme, loving havwing burlywood back as well. Many thanks, sambo. :D
[EDIT]Colour seems to have been disabled in sigs, BTW.
-
Try editing your sig. They were disabled for a time, but they should be re-enabled now.
-
Crap, there was something I just noticed earlier about the new layout and was going to mention in one of these threads, but now I can't remember it. wryyyyyy
-
Wait what the ----------
It's super-good overall but there's something strange in that imo.... i think it's the page bottom (you don't see anything?) and the big news banner top (it kills the whole theme.... just a feeling...).
-
It's super-good overall but there's something strange in that imo.... i think it's the page bottom (you don't see anything?)
You mean the grey thing in the bottom? Yes, I've certainly noticed it's so damned awesome that it looks like it's going to jump off the screen, kick me on the face, grab a beer from my fridge, get laid with my mother, and then get back on the screen. And it's so damned awesome I'm not really sure I would mind it.
-
Goober mentioned something about post anchors not working correctly. I ... think I see what he means.
-
O hay, now I remember what I was going to mention the other day. How do people feel about the little link images next to links? I feel like I'd rather see them ditched myself if that's possible, but maybe I'm in the minority.
-
I like them. It makes links stand out.
-
As long as they don't block off bits of text (like how they do in Highlights), I'm not too concerned.
By the way, thread anchors do appear to be broken. It might be good to fix them ASAP, since they are used all over the place.
-
How do people feel about the little link images next to links? I feel like I'd rather see them ditched myself if that's possible, but maybe I'm in the minority.
I can agree. I never see blue/underlined text used for anything other than links anyway, so IMO the images seem unnecessary.
-
+1 for the removal of the "THIS IS A LINK GODDAMMIT" image.
-
I think I'll start posting in blue underlined text.
-
I think I'll start posting in blue underlined text.
Go ahead, it's not like the links on HLP are blue anyway.

Thank you for the adjustment, this is most profitable.
Next we need to find a little jpeg of the link image to insert in all our posts!

I strongly dislike you people.

i hate them and i hate you

So I learned in school why that color is so hard to read. Doesn't change the fact that my eyes hurt now. :(

Don't make me put you in the Firewalled Users group. :p
-
I only see the Meeting Hall in the list of Group Memberships. Is that a hidden group?
-
Well, I once threatened to suggest everyone to pick their own color to post with. Perhaps then we'd get some actual rules concerning use of colors in these forums. Yes, I strongly dislike how colors are used by Black Wolf, Mobius and Bengal Tiger. But it seems nothing will be done about that until use of colors becomes more widespread. Since there are no rules regarding use of colors, admins can't punish you for it. If those three can use colors, so can the rest of us.
I pick red. It sticks out in dark background which I love since I'm so important.
-
...seriously, man?
-
I'll take green.
Or purple.
Which do you guys think?
-
i call this one!
-
Naturally.
-
I pick this colour. You'll find that I only use it when I'm dead serious about whatever I'm writing. I do not use it that often because HLP is not a place that I expect myself to take seriously 99.99% of the time, like Dettol.
The Internet may be serious business for other people, but not for me. I will not let it be for me.
Unlike the three members that you've mentioned, Fury, who each have special colour tags for their own use, no one else has. I could use #9966CC all over the forums, but even though I memorise the hex code, I'm too lazy to use it. The same will apply for most other members.
With all due respect, Fury, you need to back off. If the issue was ignored right from the beginning, nobody will give a hoot. However, by pressing the issue, you will draw more and more attention to it, which is not always the brightest idea in the world.

Whilst I can appreciate where you're coming from Fury (there are things apart from colours that some posters use that personally annoy the hell out of me), I think you're taking this the wrong way. I know for BW and Mobius at least that their use of colour has been for so long that I know for me at least, it would be weird if they suddenly ceased their use of it. But I know for sure that the three of them don't use colours just to irritate other forum members.
While you said earlier that you find it irritating, I do believe that the posters who use colour have said in response that they're not going to stop (correct me if I'm wrong, I've just been reading this on and off), and as such, I think that of all the things that could add to the drama on HLP as of late, colour is a topic that seems to me at least as a really trivial thing to get people annoyed over.
If those three can use colors, so can the rest of us.
A sentence like that makes me think that you view their use of colours as a deliberate attempt to draw some kind of exclusive attention to themselves, but I'm quite sure that that's not the intent that they have with it at all. They're all nice people and I'm sure none of them want to tick you off every time that they log on and post.
And to some extent, I agree with Androgeos also, although I wouldn't have worded it like that. Colour is just like all the other tags on this forum, and they can be abused by anyone, but by promoting that kind of abuse to further your cause isn't the best way I can see to go about it.
-
MINE, THIS ONE IS MINE!
-
Colour is just like all the other tags on this forum, and they can be abused by anyone, but by promoting that kind of abuse to further your cause isn't the best way I can see to go about it.
What abuse? There's no rules concerning use of colors, hence there's no abuse either. I could add italics or bold to my posts, but it'd just slow me down even more than adding red does. If I want to color my posts red, I can, it's my choice. You just have to live with it.
Seriously though, it's goddamn annoying and an eyesore but since the point is not getting home the conventional means...
-
That's true, but we already know of your opinion and as Andro indirectly said, will just make us a little more annoyed, rather than getting publicity for the issue of persistent colour usage of longtime forum members. Or at least, that's the way I can see it happening.
Okay, I don't want to get too involved in this, but all I want to say is that I don't see this ending well, from my point of view. I'm not going to try and be a one man army and tell you stop with all of my might, but I am going to recommend that you try sorting this out personally through PMs with the three members, rather than this. I still think we can have a HLP without rules on colour. And as someone who comes here on a regular basis, I really don't want for there to be a grand colour fistfight on the forum.
And if you've already tried that, then I guess the ball's in the admin crowd's court only, then.
-
O rly?
Mine.
This one too
All seriousness. So we have a few select users that have decided to express a personality to their user space by differentiating themselves by post colors. But ohs noes, it's not regulated to lock step and somebody is out of joint about it.
Whatever. I expected better than this out of somebody like you Fury. The attitude strikes me as bitter and petty and makes no sense to me.
-
I feel like I should post something here, but I'm not sure what it should be yet. So forgive me if this comes out a bit stream-of-consciousnessish.
I have been doing this for years, and 99% of the people on the forum have never complained. It's not disruptive, it's not hard to read, it's just different. Now, compare that to what you're doing - deliberately choosing a colour that's hard to read for the specific purpose of making your post hard to read, hoping that by being difficult, you'll get a rule changed. That's the equivalent, in an admittedly less dramatic fashion, to trying to get cricket bats banned by going around bashing people over the head with one.
But you know what? I say go for it. I can hardly sit here and tell other people not to post in a specific colour, because that would be first order hypocrisy. For that matter, if everyone chose a colour, as long as those colours weren't hard to read, how would that make anyone's viewing experience worse at HLP? And snce it'd be no worse, why should there be a rule against it? Of course, the operative part of that sentence is "weren't hard to read", which I suspect is not your aim, but what the hell, it's not unreadable. the /me tags already make posts bright red, and bold besides. But the most mportant difference I reckon isn't the colour, it's the underlying motivation. Mine is... well, I don't even remember. I like it, and now it's just habit. I still like it. My motivations are essentially positive. Yours are openly negative. But there is one key element I think...
If those three can use colors, so can the rest of us.
You're damned right. Go nuts. :D
[EDIT]
...getting publicity for the issue of pretentious colour usage of longtime forum members.
:(
-
As I've said before, I don't have a problem with it as long as I can read it, if I can't read it, I don't, and the poster defeats their own purpose. I don't have any problem with those who post in colour on here, because I don't have any trouble reading their posts.
-
Dibs on pink!

EDIT]
...getting publicity for the issue of pretentious colour usage of longtime forum members.
:(
Oh, sorrrrrrry.
I may have pulled an all nighter in addition to all my other sleeping difficulties. :P Calling it pretentious would've ran counter to the rest of my argument; I was thinking pretentious use of colour after reading Fury's post and appreciating what his viewpoint was and that must've passed somewhere between my head and keyboard whilst typing and ended up in there. I've got no beef with you, mate. fix'd.
-
Honestly, I don't see what the issue is. HLP's color theme is back, and the three aforementioned users post with the same color we have gotten used to. There's nothing illegible about them anymore.
(However, I endorse Fury's use of hard-to-read red as a rhetoric device, even though I don't agree with his view.)
-

So where are my Battuta tags? :(

You guys both suck.
And you're covered in chicken excrement. Your point? :p

I changed my mind. I want this one. Anyways, I'm super special too, why don't I have iamzack zags. :< I DEMAND TAGS.

That'd be funny enough that I'd have no problem with it. :P

i can haz dis culler.
-
If you're gonna do it, do it right, man.
-
Dear lord, that's literally invisible.
Not just hard to read, but honestly the exact same color as the backgroudn.
-
Didn't find a word for the proper color, so I kinda just put black and said "screw it"
-
It looks just a tad off to me, but that is nominally the exact color of the background. It must be ClearType doing weird stuff.
-
Probably.
The gradient's interlaced, now that I'm looking at it so very closely. There's nothing wrong with that, though.
-
Post text colours aside, I would like to suggest black background and medium green text for code tags. Reason being that green monospace font reminds me of the greenscreen displays of the olden days and thus it is awesome. There are other, more scientific reasons too; green is the colour that human eyes are most sensitive to, and people with glasses of strong prescription will not suffer from the text separating into red, green and blue pixel components due to colour aberration on the lenses (this happens to of all the time with white objects on dark background). It would also be immediately identifiable as code section.
-

That is a fine idea!
Though just about anything is an improvement over grey text over a lighter grey background. :)

Rainbow text.... I HAVE CHANGE MY MIND AGAIN I WANT RAINBOW TEXT INSTEAD OF PINK WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Are you using blackhole's rainbow script?
Alas, no, I was trying to locate it on my hard drive, but seem to have lost it. I used this instead:

Actually, the rainbow text is easy to read until it turns dark blue - at least, on some monitors. Good ones and you can read it all very easily. It would make us all seem a little crazy if everyone started using it everywhere...
-
I'm going to quote colour users in rainbow, then no-one will take me seriously. :P

I think this thread has pretty much run its course, expect an Admin decision on posting in colours soon. Until then, my own personal opinion is that if you choose a single, readable colour and stick to it, that will be tolerated, if, however, you post in rainbow text, this will not be. IAmZack was told to not do it, and chose to ignore that, coupled with the fact that the rainbow text breaks the obscenity filter, her posts are now moderated.
I should point out at this stage: Benevolent Dictatorship, always has been, always will be.
