I propose the idea of creating three fleets of derilect ships. vessels that have fallen in the height of war, but survived destruction. The tombs of ghosts, warriors defeated.
What I propose is the addition of battle scars, holes, carvings into the hulls of such ships as the Deimos, the Demon, the Sobek, and any other capital ship of which it would be viable. Such ships could open up new potentials for mods, their plots and fredders, and bring about new, dramatic campaigns and missions.
seared scars along the hull, vast pits carved deep into them, charred holes punched clear through... These are the scars of defeat that I plan to inflict, not just to Terrans and Vasudans, but even to the mighty Shivans.
What is your take on the oppertunity of a dead, ghostly fleet? And what protection and services their cold husks might serve?

Most subsystems would be intact, as well as random turrets. (no sense having all the turrets functional) A couple variations could be made (suggested by Scotty) to aid in the creation of different scenarios. Operational ships could return from battle with scars along their hull, or sit adrift, forgotten in the darkness, cold and dead.
The aftermaths of vast battles, the cold expanse of graveyards, of lost hopes and dreams, and the haunting places of the demons that still lurk within...

Help would be greatly appreciated in this venture as it would be a benefit to the community and the stories our users tell.

They actually would be pretty useful, I say go for it.
-
I'd suggest to have all the turrets left operational on the pof so the fredder can choose which ones he want to keep or not. More power to the fredder is always better.

This sounds like a really cool idea. The potential applications of such a project are pretty much limitless.
The bad news, obviously, is the need for a competent modeller. If you personally are not familiar with a 3d modelling program, you'll need to convince one of the model folks around here to work with you. I can't imagine good modellers staying idle for very long...
-
Yeah. I'm working on getting models to work from concept to Pof. after that, I shoudl be fine. So far, I'm only having problems getting specific materials to enter. (which results in nothing entering)
But once I smooth out the process for myself, I will be able to better produce the derelict fleet. ANd even then, I welcome any help. :)
A lot of ships, and a lot of work to make the freighters, cruisers, destroyers and everything beyond and between take quite the beating. :D And perhaps even do the same for ships returning to battle. ANd it won't be just the paintjob! >:D

I made a derelict Orion a while ago...And someone else made another low-poly verssion before that.
Aside from that, I'm not aware of any derelict models.
-
This would be awesomesauce. Full support!
-
Definitely, this would be really useful. Half finished ships would be almost as useful as well, if anyone's feeling bored. A half-constructed Orion or Fenris would come in mighty handy to some of us. :D

Is it possible to set debris speed to zero and give them custom hitpoints?
If so, I'd like to request really big, shipwreck debris for all .pof's, which would leave instant derelicts during missions.
Would it be possible to give debris their own debris/debris fields? So that the shipwrecks would further fall apart into small fragments when destroyed...?
-
Awesome idea, extremly useful for Shadow Genesis.
Currently I'm makeing shipwrecks be the special ship settings [no glowmaps, no glowpoints] and sometimes, by the textures [Orion had special "derelicted" textures - Legion, Arcadia and Ganymede too - in Vassago's Dirge], but remodelling meshes into a something like Trashman's Legion would be a better idea [but harder].
-
It's a good idea indeed.

Asteroids, after getting destroyed, become asteroid debris. These have their own smaller debris after they're blown up, so it might be possible to borrow that code and allow to destroy a ship and have a shipwreck (a debris that is the original ship cut in half, cratered, punctured, burned out, etc) after it explodes. After further pounding into the shipwreck it would fall apart completely into the regular debris we have now.
Putting a shipwreck into a mission would involve using self-destruct and inserting the player some time after the mission starts.
-
Can you imagine a Furball with the Shivans INSIDE all that debris! maybe some how if you run smack into one, the debris that is (or the AI) they blow up or you end your mission as a Oppsy-Daisy! Now that will keep you on your toes! :)
-
It would be a good way to loose the Shivans. Before the AI will be able to take the fight inside blown up ships it'll need a few lessons about collision avoidance.
Multiplayer should benefit from this though...

Go for it. Ask the creators of excisting models if you can perhaps use their models to make the derelicts match the ingame models. :)
