I never feel comfortable when I'm playing with Auto-Match simply because if I need to get to a target fast, and I run out of AB, I need to turn off Match to go full speed. Personally I think if I'm holding AB pressed, even after the AB has depleted and has begun recharding, that it should be pretty much guaranteed that I want to go as fast as possible. Could this be a setting added, or perhaps even just made default?

I don't know what you're talking about, whenever I continue holding TAB after the afterburner is depleted even with Match Speed on my ship attempts going at whatever top speed it can push out.
-
I always push the button again right after the AB is depleted (you still get the depleted sound - but the AB recharges while your ship's getting faster) - then your ship accelerates to max speed :)
-
This is indeed the standard behaviour. If you push AB, but you don't have any AB energy left, you'll be taken to max speed.

I think what is being asked for is a feature (set in Ai_profiles and/or ships table maybe???) where by using the afterburner energy allows you to accelerate beyond maximum speed and acceleration continues while you have afterburner energy up to the afterburner speed (like normal). then while the afterburner is held but there is no energy left what ever afterburner speed you achieved is held until the afterburner key is released at which point your craft decelerates back to the throttle speed. personally I would support this feature.
@carn1x
I believe a and z temporarily overrides match speed (or manually set throttle for that matter) without killing match speed (could be wrong though), otherwise do what everyone else does and manually meter out the use of afterburner to achieve a higher average speed.

I just hold down A while afterburning, so that when the engine energy cuts out, the fighter doesn't try to drop down to the match speed value. The keys are like right beside each other too, so that's a bonus.
-
Just keep holding TAB as I said earlier. I tested it to make sure it would happen right before posting.
-
Eh. Depends on your style of afterburning. If you hold down tab while you regenerate energy, briefly letting go of the key to hit it again might drop your velocity unnecessarily far if you're not holding A at the same time.
