Title: Joystick, Track Ir & Rudder
Post by: Mikyjax on January 23, 2011, 07:10:44 am
Hello guys,
I'm new in your universe and I like it very much.

I installed everything needed to play and start the training to learn the basics of FSO... great fun in perspective...
I m 24 years old and I m from belgium.
I came from f-16 simulation (open falcon) wich bring me to the folowing question
[Presentation --- > checked ]

Is it possible to use multiple joystick... i mean I have the Hotas cougar and the saitek pro flight Rudder... is it possible to make theim work together?

I saw somewhere the trackIr was enhanced... but in the game it dosen't react... how to do so?

Thanks a lot for your help...
See you soon in the space :)
Mike

Unfortunately, unless you use some kind of profiler, multiple devices are not supported.
I'm using a set of CH controllers (Fighterstick, Pro Throttle and Pro Pedals), the only way I could enable them all was to map all of them to a single device (CH stuff comes with a nice profiler for them, but unfortunately, it doesn't work with anything but CH controllers). A fix for this has been requested on SCP forums (by numerous people), but it doesn't seem to be easy to implement and thus, not coming anytime soon.
As for TrackIR, you may need a special DLL file for it to work, though I don't know for sure, since I don't use it.

I discussed a little with people on the irc they said like you for muultiple controller... will will just map 2 button rudderleft and right.. it s not so sad...

For the track ir you re right,i found the dll and it work perfectly!
Thank you
Mike

A good profiler may be able to assign rudder pedals to an axis.
CH one allows for that, but it's dedicated software for CH controllers.
You should check available profilers and check if there's one that could do that.

download ppjoy and ppjoyjoy for mix the various axes, and then bind with his appropriate software the buttons of the hotas.
track ir works with his ddl

I thought direct input supported multiple controllers by default unless fs2 doesn't use direct input

ps: dragon said the coders have look at the problem and have not been able to fix it, well Enemy Engaged Comanche vs Hokum supports multiple controllers and its open source
perhaps looking how its done in that game would yield a solution

There are numerous games which support multiple controllers: FreeFalcon 5.0, Star Wars: Battlefront II, ArmA II, X3, LOMAC to name a few.
Unfortunately, the code for these games has literally nothing in common with FS2_Open code. They are all much newer than FS2, using diffrent methods of handling controllers and thus, can handle multiple controllers without any problems.
FS2_Open isn't one of such games, which means it's controller handling system is nearly unchanged from retail (thus outdated), which means that there's no way to allow multiple controllers without completely rewriting the system. Nobody on FSO team seems to be interested in doing that, since it would take a lot of time, effort and testing to get it working.

Free falcon 5 is a child of Falcon 4.0 released one year before freespace 2 ;)
But I agree, it would take a lot of time to do it...

I know that FF5 was developed from Falcon 4, but changes have been really extensive, or so it seems from reading the original manual.
I wouldn't be suprised if they allowed multiple joysticks, even if this feature wasn't present in Falcon 4.
Also, Falcon 4 could have featured multiple joysticks support due to the fact it's difficult to fly an F-16 without a proper HOTAS system.
It definitely wasn't the standard at that time.
