Title: Total System Crash
Post by: BigIron on January 25, 2011, 07:38:35 am
My comp crashes whenever I try to launch from the FSO app. I can play FS2 when I use the retail launcher. I have tried a total reinstall with no success. I have all the FS retail cd's.

My system: CPU  AMD 64 X2 4600+
                           Socket AM2
                           DDR2 2048 M PC2-6400
                           ATI Radeon 4350

Good grief. I've never seen a log just stop like that. Well as a start, remove any discs from the drives (don't need them), make sure your video card drivers are up to date, and make sure your FreeSpace is patched to 1.2.

Code: [Select]
Found root pack 'd:\tango1_fs2.vp' with a checksum of 0x4c25221eSince this is FSO, try running the game without the disks. Usually when the game freezes when finding some file, it is because that particular file is somehow borked. Badly.

Updated my video drivers....system still crashes (just shuts down and reboots my comp).
Where would I find the 1.2 patch?

What operating system you are using? I'm going to assume it is Windows XP.

Quote
1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. Click the Advanced tab.
3. Under Startup and Recovery, click Settings to open the Startup and Recovery dialog box.
4. Clear the Automatically restart check box, and click OK the necessary number of times.
5. Restart your computer for the settings to take effect.
Now when you go to shut down and a fatal error occurs, you'll at least see it and it won't cause an automatic reboot. You still have to sort out what's causing the problem, but that gets us to the next section quite nicely.
Follow these instructions to turn off WinXP's automatic restart when BSOD (Blue Screen of Death) occurs.

Then, the next time you try to start FSO, you should be greeted with a blue screen like this:

In the first half of the blue screen, it should tell you what file has caused the problem and actual error message. In the example above, file is SPCMDCON.SYS and error message is PAGE_FAULT_IN_NON_PAGED_AREA. Write these down from the blue screen you get and post here. Text under "Technical information" is often irrelevant, so don't bother with that part.

Things seem to be working now. Did a manual install and a system restore and so far it's all good. Thanks for the help.
