Title: Some questions about gameplay and more
Post by: Mikyjax on January 26, 2011, 09:04:49 am
Hi guys,
I started the game freespace open with the first game port and I have a few questions.

1. Track ir doesn't work in that mod is it normal? it works in others.

2. Are we always noticed that we have any missile launched at us?

3. Is it a good solution to put afterburner when engaged by an heat seeking missile as said in the training. It sounds hard to believe

4. What differents seeking mode are availlable for missile? Heat? radar? anything else?

5. About joystick control, I noticed that in freespace 2 the moves axes for the souris are rotation and pitch... and I understand why... because the bank is pratically useless... so what do you do with a joystick? roll or rotation?

thanks
Mike

1. no idea

2. Yes

3. Yeah, it is, the extra maneuvering punch is worth more than any fluffed 'heat emissions'

4. Heat, aspect and dumbfire

5. Most people use their joystick to control pitch and yaw axes, in contrast to atmospheric flight sims where yawing doesn't turn the velocity of the aircraft very effectively. I wouldn't call bank useless; in conjunction with turning along the other axes it does make you rather hard to hit with primaries, and it's useful if you enjoy being able to orient yourself with other ships without having to rotate crazily along the other axes.

Missiles which require you to acquire aspect lock, think the Hornet and the Harpoon.

Oki thanks a lot, and the counter mesure can defeat both of theim?

I will post in the fsport forum my question about track IR

Yes it can, however you can also evade them using afterburners, the same way the TSM said you could evade heat seeking missiles. Might take a bit of practice, but it pays off when things get hot. :)

If you use the contermeasures right, they can defeat all types of missiles.

Well, it's not as simple as "press 'C' and win the game", but yeah; countermeasures can help in surviving both aspect-seeking and heat-seeking missiles.

If you do the loop thing right you can basically defeat every missile, countermeasures and afterburner be damned (short of H4X misslies with like 0 turn time I guess). :P

But yes, dumping CMs and erratically firing afterburners screws up missile tracking.

you should read "How to Live and Die in the Virtual Sky" by Dan "Crash" Crenshaw
some of it isn't relevant because you don't have to deal with gravity in fs2 but a lot of it is and reading it will make you a better dogfighter

I heartily recommend this, especially if you play any combat flight sims at all.
