I just spent half an hour writing up a review of the first stages (side/ship selection/character creation/flight-combat-docking turorial) of my BSGO Beta account I got 4 days ago but the HL Forum had a brain fart and I lost all of it....
so here, have a couple of screenshots...

Um, doesn't the NDA still apply? It's still a *closed* beta, correct?
-
Not to my knowledge, I wasn't requested to sign nor have I seen an NDA of any kind, not prior to/during/since sign up. I will investigate regardless. The reason I created this thread was to show the diaspora team and guests about BSGO and any similarities to Diaspora... there are none and I believe the latter will be the better game which was explained in my failed attempt to create this thread to begin with.
I'll rewrite the thread if anybody is actually interested...
-
The open beta begins on 8th.
-
You did something similar to signing an NDA when you accepted the terms of service. Easy to forget that one but legally binding click :)
-
It's being covered on major gaming sites.
-
So? Being covered as in a few lines of very general information and the announcement for open beta on feb 8, yes. In-depth reviews? No. Just saying, those participating in closed beta would probably be smart to wait until beta goes open - so another week - before publishing any in-depth reviews.
-
Well I just read a pretty in-depth review (on Kotaku I think, maybe on RPS).
-
so on the 8th we will be able to play the beta? i am looking forward to checking this one out, it looks awesome!
i hope i won't have to do a verification check every post i do.. it will annoy the **** out of me if so.
-
The verification posts stop pretty soon (somebody should add a note about that), but bear in mind this forum is for Diaspora, not Battlestar Galactica Online.
-
oh, i didn't realize that this post was about that game(it bites) and thought it was for this one. im in that beta already.. i would love to test for you all on this one because i think its an awesome concept for a bsg game and what i have seen so far is sweet. i've been in many betas and i'm in several right now. if you all are letting some in your closed beta i would like to be considered as a tester. i am one of the devs for Miner Wars atm (just a community manager) and i have received awards for my beta testing.. i even have my name in the credits for shattered horizon along with about 20 others for outstanding beta participation.
anyway, great work you all on this one and i look forward to playing in the future!
-
You're a real bush hog, ain't you, Mr. Josey Wales?
-
I like bragging about my non existent exploits too! Weee~!
-
Hey, I don't think he's making it up. Don't be hostile!
(Also is being a bush hog a good thing or a bad thing?)
-
I dunno, Clint shot the rube who said it and spat chew on his face soon after though.
-
I tried it, it's a bad game, and with BigPoint it'll become a money game.
Never play at BigPoint games.
-
i can back up what i say FraktuRe.. :p
nice one on remembering the movie StarSlayer! it's one of my favorites!
as for th bsg game i though that the graphics were ok, just. but the controls are for kiddies and not serious gamers. no flight physics or anything. it reminds me of an old arcade game for the most part. it will be good for the 12 and under crowd i think but its not a game i will be playing.

here is my sig for Miner Wars and the link to check it out.. its a great game and one i recommend. it is far from finished but i have a good time blasting the destructable environment and fragging the bot enemies.. soon the code for multi and co-op should be done and it will get even better. after the single/co-op version is done work will start on the MMO version of the game. anyhow, i think it's one worth checking out.

i also have posted the sig i used for SH when i was testing it. i make up my own as well as make them up for others.. so if anyone would like one let me know.

I think we've had a few Miner Wars threads here and good things have been said.
-
From the videos that ive seen of it the game doesnt appear to be an action space combat game. It looks more like a point and click style game like eve online. Is that true? Also the only good thing from the game that I can see in those screen shots is the ability to tour the galactica. But they should just make a BSG FPS.
-
It is a more combat and PvP version of EVE. Similar skill acquisition concept though. As to the touring, it is three rooms, so don't get your hopes up.
<as stated before I am in the closed beta as well>
Some one did do a FPS mod fro BSG. I forgot on what engine though. Found it doing random video searches one night.
-
That was a mod that was going to be for Crysis. It was going to be done by the same people that did the homeworld 2 bsg mod but so far it seems the Crysis one has been canceled.
By the way. I signed up for Beta access yesterday. How long does it take them to clear you?
-
there was also one for the source engine, but it was never released.
-
CIC looks different.

The open beta begins on the 8th so a couple of days and you're in... a couple of days after that and you'll probably be bored of it.
-
The open beta is now, erm, open.
-
Ive been playing it today. And the truth is its not all that great. The graphics are good but the gameplay is pretty bad. If they fixed the control scheme it might actual be an ok game. They should follow the controls of the Star Trek Online space mechanics. Now thats an easy game to get into. The other thing that im bugged at is the fact you can only have one character. Once you pick Cylon or Human you have to stick with that character. You cant change it.I picked Cylon but I also wanted to try the Colonial side. Its a shame they wont let you cancel or switch.
-
Maybe they'll give the option to switch sides once it gets out of beta. As for the controls, I found the keyboard flight controls to be pretty useless. Using the mouse works a lot better, somewhat similar to Freelancer. Considering it's a browser game, this may be one of the areas you just have to forgive.
-
for a browser game, Its pretty good.
the flying is OK, I got the hang of it quickly, but had to rebind throttle to q&e for convenience.
rolling cylon on Scorpia
-
Thanks for the tip newman. Dragging the mouse works better. But I prefer to play games with wasd fps controls.
-
Before I try it does it support joystick? Can't see trying a space sim that doesn't.

Nope. And don't think of it as a sim, it's really not. Think simplified Freelancer in terms of flight.
-
I think the setting is a fairly contrived but ties in pretty well with the cycle of time (each side is refurbishing ancient human/machine ships they come across) but so far it's not feeling terribly engaging or even all that BSG-y. As has been mentioned, the manual flight controls are tricky at best.
I'll keep plugging away and see if my thoughts change though.
-
It handles nothing like BSG, the game needs a glide button. But its okay for a free browser-based game, runs alright, looks alright.
man, I really wish there were a new space-BSG game where you could fly one way and shoot the other way.....

Just a bit more patience, and there will be one ;)

I dont know about the bigger ships but as far as I know (been playing for a while) you can buy an RCS Glide thruster for your viper/raptor -- raider/Hraider
I think the game is pretty good for a browser game. I mean it is still in BETA but it only has a few bugs that I have found. The combat is a little on the boring side unless you get into heavy PVP action which is amazingly stunning to see and incredibly hard for this poor old laptop to render. All in all i like it. (Colonial/Libran)
-
I have not messed with it since my last post in here about it. If I am remembering correctly there is a "slide" feature you can purchase and equip on your ship. It is fairly expensive when you first start but chump change later.
-
It's interesting, not my cup of tea for the fighting necessarily. More like a Facebook app.
Visually interesting use of interface though. I find some of the on screen items a bit distracting.
Point and click is a bit buggy for a dogfight for sure but amused me for a bit regardless.
I went in as a Cylon. I may play from time to time, doubt I'll squad up as I'm not 'that' intrigued by it though.
-
While it does have some major drawbacks graphics and flight wise it's a very fun game. I'm sitting here making myself get some work done for Diaspora so I can go play. I've become a major addict playing for 10 hours a day. Might be getting my line ship today. I should have enough credits for a Fenir by the end of the night (haven't bought any just get them by killing and doing dailys) but not enough fuel for the Hel. Might hold off until I do and go straight to an advanced line.
