I have acquired a job programming at my university's Space Physics Research Laboratory. Freespace was mentioned at the interview. I hypothesize that if you mention Freespace modding experience during a job interview, then you are incredibly likely to get the job.
need additional evidence
-
I mentioned that I was contributing to A Star Wars mod for freespace 2. I got the job, but they had nver heard of FS2. I don't know if that counts.
-
I also got my prior (not this) job while mentioning FS2 in the interview..
-
moar evidence:
jobttuta obtained job with help of blueplanettuta
-
I put "mod development for PC games" on my CV and my website has a link to the PI site. The jobs I'm applying to are not in software development (although they will involve some of that), but many employers like to see involvement in things like this.
-
i get paid for being symptomatic of schizophrenia and i tell the therapist about my internet friends on the freespace forum
does that count?
-
:p
-
5(000) years ago, Jobber5000 obtained job with help of SCP5000.
So far, all data points support thesizzler's hypothesis.
-
HYPOTHEOSIS
Is this like hypothesis and apotheosis
'cause that's totally the name of a WiH chapter
-
Pretty sure I mentioned dabbling in the SCP at some point in the interview process. Obviously the hypotheosis is correct.
If nothing else, it's my new favorite word.
-
I recall mentioning PCS2 in one of my Google interviews.
-
Worked for me at Epic
-
I mentioned I was involved in FS2 modding when I interviewed at my current job, I was talking about hobbies than as part of my pitch though.
-
What would happen if two people mentioned FreeSpace when applying for a single job?
-
They would create a second job so they could hire them both.
-
when applying for a job stacking shelves told employer I would be very good at filling up the free space
hypothesis proved.......
-
Man, I haven't actually done anything to contribute to this community. I won't be able to test the hypotheosis. :(
-
I showed off my high-poly Dis to the architecture firm I applied to and got the job. More supporting evidence.
My employment agency just called Goober5000 to give me a reference... let's see what happens.
-
Davros senses exciting new blackmail opportunities for Gooby :D
-

I know the feeling, but at the same time, this wouldn't relate to my field of employment.
That said, I do want to start contributing more.
-
I didn't mention FreeSpace in the interview I had two Monday's ago. Dang!
-

i don't contribute and i still get money

but there is no strict interview for the presidency
-
Well there's your problem!
We need to implement a Presidential interview!
-
I have the feeling that the only FreeSpace known to politicians is what is between their ears. Heck with the interview how about a competency test.
-
I didn't mention FS at the interview.
...but it's possible it's the reason I'm the only male employee left at this branch. Even the night crew and the janitor are all female now.
-

Hey, if you tell politicians that you've been working on stuff related to freespace, they'll consider you a patriot I bet. You know, freespace in freedom-land!

unless they though your were giving away space for free in which case you would be a traitor to capitalism, which as we all know is the highest crime in the west!
-
Think saying FreeSpace will help me get a job as a page at the library? I need a summer job :P
-
i applied at Jimmy John's yesterday
if they call me i will be sure to shout freespace into the phone as soon as i pick up
-
I have acquired a job programming at my university's Space Physics Research Laboratory. Freespace was mentioned at the interview. I hypothesize that if you mention Freespace during a job interview, then you are guaranteed to get the job.
need additional evidence
yeah absolutely don't mention that in every job interview.
sure perhaps if you contributed to a MOD, and you're applying for a programming or development job, then go ahead.
If you're applying as Director of IT, don't mention that you play freespace...
-
I wouldn't say anything if you just play it, but if you have been heavily involved in some mod project, putting that on your resume can only help you. Employers won't hire you on just that basis but they generally like to see signs of creativity like this, and in a marginal decision where they have a couple of equally qualified people, they will go for the more interesting person.
I was recently asked about my "mod development" for a research scientist job (in DSP/control algorithms) and a quant analyst (finance) role. Neither of the people knew much about games but seemed very interested in learning more about what I did.
-
I have revised the hypothesis for more accuracy, we still need more evidence.
-
RESULT.
Had an interview today. Mentioned FreeSpace. They want me back next week to meet the folks I would be working with.
No official offer yet, but it's pretty positive.
-
woot
-
I will be giving a resume to two people on Sunday, it will contain note of my mod leadership.
Rejoice... for there shall be more raw data.
-
Hypothesis confirmed! FreeSpace-referenced interview has led to job offer!
-
Grats!
I leech material from this community. Probably wouldn't want to bring that up at any interview :P
-
I leech dignity from this community. I bring it up at every interview.
