Title: Anyone wanna fix up a model?
Post by: CommanderDJ on February 03, 2011, 04:38:23 am
Hey guys,
I'm just wondering whether someone would be interested in fixing up this model (http://freespacemods.net/download.php?view.373) (I have obtained permission from TrashMan for the model to be fixed up). It works fine in release builds and in-game (haven't used it in combat yet), but debug builds give a number of errors, such as bounding box and moment of inertia errors. For the purposes I'm using it for these don't really matter to me that much, but I'm worried that they might affect the fighter if I try and use it in combat and such. I know nothing about modelling so I can't do this myself and I don't know how simple or difficult a job it is, but if anyone's interested, then post here or PM me.
Thanks!

On it.

EDIT: WHO in the WHAT did the HELL to these models? Srsly. These things may load up in PCS2, but they are not usable in game.

I fixed the tables so that A and B could both be loaded. (I also removed "$PBank Capacity:" as it is completely unnecessary, and corrected the "Subach HL-7R" to "Subach HL-7") I then added MOIs and corrected Mass and tried to purge the BSP cache and recalculate smoothing (smoothing that is utterly non-existent or completely ass backwards). I then added mip-maps to the textures and seriously corrected the sad excuse of a -shine map there was, though the normal map will probably need to be redone from scratch. And why the hell the main texture couldn't be applied to the lower LODs is beyond me because PersAdvaC.dds should not be needed AT ALL.

The pof's load, but *****es about the 'glass', 'tercoc' and 'pilot' and all of the glowpoints being unload-able and then I get the model with an utterly gaping hole where the cockpit is supposed to be. Which isn't surprising because it's not the LAST item on the hierarchy list in PCS2 to properly render transparency on, but how the hell this screws up the glow points is a new one on me.

In short, this model, while a nice looking one in PCS2 (if you ignore the "cockpit" area) is in serious need of a complete and total re-conversion. Preferably from the original source files used to make whatever the POF came from. I have no idea what Era these models would have EVER worked in, but it still would have been unacceptable in THAT era for the condition this is in.

Here is a quick-fix package. I cheated and Exported the original models to DAE and then Imported the DAE's back to POF.

Fixes the cockpit issues, but smoothing is still ass-tastic. The package also has fixed TBM's and corrected -Shine, plus all DDS files now have mip-maps.

You should probably tell FSMods, I think I have the old DL in a ship folder called fs2, for my own archives...

I wonder how many people have the old version and not realize it was full of...Difficulties.

 ;)

Immense thanks to Zacam for this. He spent hours and hours on it and only the IRC logs can show the rage that ensued. And it works in game, so I'm happy.

Wait..you got that version from FS mods? You didn't try the version from the FoW model pack?...

Oooooo...hrm...given that that version works for me without any problems...maybe Zacams work was not really necessary. Ouch...
