Chinese TV Channel uses footage from Top Gun in state report on Air Combat Manouvres
-
Yeah, I heard about this one a few days ago. :D
Funny thing is that the real footage (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9XB_de_bQrA) didn't actually need to be sexed up.

Actually, it could have used some editing, given how bleeding obvious it is, when the Chinese aircraft are replaced with an American F-14. Then again, if they're going to steal the footage from an American movie, instead of doctoring their own or splicing together stuff from actual military exercises, I suppose I should expect that kind thing to be missed.

"the real footage" still has the clips in it. Several times.
-
I saw....one. At about 1:10, the fighter exploding. That's the only thing I could find from Top Gun. I must be missing something...? I certainly didn't see any Tomcats in there.
-
I might be mistaken, but I thought I saw at least one shot of them flying in formation, and they weren't chinese planes at all.
-
At which part?
-
The missile being fired, right before the plane explodes is part of the same Top Gun clip as the explosion. It's not as easily differentiated in profile as it would have been from above, below, or end-on, but it is a Tomcat doing the firing, not anything that China flies.
-
At 1:10? That's definitely not a Tomcat...F-14 doesn't have a black nose.
Besides, they never used that camera angle when they were shooting a missile launch from one of the F-14s in the movie. It was usually shown from below, rear, and off the port side.
-
Well it's nice to know that the Chinese are doing better than they were in the 80s, with something like 35% of their pilots qualified to fly 'all-weather'. :P
-

The F-14 has a nose whatever color you chose to paint it.
-
@1:10? Not a Tomcat, there are about a dozen things wrong with it to be a F-14, but the easiest one to point out is that it only has one vertical stabilizer that is the wrong shape for an F-14. It's one of those domestic delta wing canard jobs of their's the J-10.
-
/me takes a look.
I agree, no way can that be an F-14. Nose and tail give it away immediately as the J-10. I'm surprised more people didn't mistake it for an F-16.
-
Looking at it again, I'll concede the point. I'd have sworn it had a double-tail, when I watched it this morning, but that's definately not the case. Oops.

I know. That was the entire news report in question.
But there is real footage in there which is pretty cool. No need for Top Gun. :)

I agree, the real footage itself is pretty kickass.
