Okay, I made these by taking some screenshots in FRED and then adding effects in GIMP. Then I put them through the Oilify filter so it blends nicely.
First, more of a proof that it works:

Next one I spent more time on, but I'm not satisfied with ... well... most of it really.

Maybe you can try cleaning up the messier parts in the second one before applying filters.
The first one looks pretty cool.

wow, cool stuff

Heh, I can't. GIMP crashed after I saved the flattened version and I lost all my layers. I may still just redo it though.
And thanks for the praise both of you.

Made this with a Minecraft screen and the smudge tool, what do you think, was it worth doing?

Still doesn't remove the ugly blocky look, but now the blocks look fluffy and fuzzy. lol.

Yeah, in some places I tried to smooth it out the blocks, and in some places I let my strokes get a bit messy, but most of this could be fixed if I had taken more time on it.

It's...cute? Kinda.
Looks like cubes covered in multicolor moss.

You could try to vary the size of your brush, and add different colours to it

Hm... Could you point out where that would be effective? (note: not being snarky here, I genuinely want to know)
-
i presume bobbtmann is thinking that varying the brush sizes would help to break up the vertical lines of the block columns.

:bump:
Well, I found a filter I like better, but I'm having trouble getting the feel I want for this one, titled Courage. Suggestions welcome.

Use one of the HTL Sathanases.
-
I think it looks quite good as it is, maybe you could try adding some background nebula... just try not to make it so noisy as that would ruin the entire shot.
-
Update. Minor change to the engine flare, also larger image. I considered adding some background nebulae, but decided I liked it black.

EDIT:
Moved pic here to new post.

Moved this to a new post so people will notice it...
Thoughts?

I like them a lot, do you have hi-rez versions as well?
Also, would you like to put them over the array resurrection thread, if that's ok with you.. I feel these will fit there quite well : http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=61068.0

Well, I am considering trying to make a comic or two like this. Likely just following the game storyline with a bit more characterization. Problem being, I have no idea how I would do interior scenes, as I can't really model or draw. Should I just avoid them entirely?
-
Maybe you could just draw one or two scenarios and use those as a general background for interior scenes.
