Wow, think of the advantages in recon missions.

Shivan commander: There have been many rumors about the appearance of another sentient species. These are rumors, nothing more. There will be no more talk about phantom ships.

It's a really cool idea though. Ah, the possibilities! Think about what "Into the Lion's Den" would be like if you could be cloaked...;7

...half as fun?

Really, it'd suck to shoot at stuff if it didn't generally shoot back. I mean, if all you want is to kill defenseless things, go hunting, so long as you don't step on one of my land mines it's just the same with added realism.

Well then imagine if the enemy was cloaked and all you had to target was the engine glows...

You would have an invincible target I think. As far as I know you can't hit invisible textures. (Unless you ram it.)

The best use for that really would probably not to make it a stealth vessel in the sense of the Pegasus and Ptah, leave out the 'stealth' tag in the ships table and click the stealth tag in the FRED for the ship.  That was you won't be able to see the ship or actively target it, but the you will still be able to see a sensor 'ghost'.  It would be a way to explain the thrust glows anyway, that rader can't track the ship but can pic up the engine trail and just can't decide what it is.

I bet just one space superiority ship would be able to take on a pretty decent fleet with that cloaking device.

Wonder why the Shivan's didn't have any....

reminds me of that TIE ship from the Rebel Assault 2: The Phantom something.... Now just give it ludicrously overpowered weapons and you'll have a perfectly unrealistic ship!

Well, you COULD just give the thing a completely black skin, I've done it for a light stealth bomber, with a "stealth" tag the thing's damn near impossible to get, even when it's sitting perfectly still and pouring gunfire into the nearest cruiser...

Hey - that's how we do photon torpedoes! Invisible testured, small  box, with engine glows all around it! Set it to be a missile POF, and there you have it. :)

:nervous: *gets the feeling that he thought of this only a few years after everyone else* :nervous:
