Hullo all,
I've been a fan of FreeSpace for absolute years, buying it when it was released. I might even go as far as to say it's my favourite game of all time. Nothing can beat it for sheer goosebumps and emotions. While I do not claim to be an expert, I think I'm pretty good at it. Pretty much everything about it and it's sequel are perfect and it's awesome that people out there are making mods for it. Long may this continue.
Anyway, I have a question about the "Out of the Darkness, Into The Night" when the Terrans first experience battle with the Shivans. Please don't laugh too much at me(!) but I've tried destroying the SD Manticore with Fury missiles as suggested but I carnt do it. Am I utterly useless or just a bit crap? It's a bit tricky isn't it? I really want to do it to show Terran command what I'm capable of, but it's so damned tricky! Does the story change if you manage to do it? Do you get a medal if you do so? Please fill me in! Cheers!

There are Shaitan bombers and Scorpion fighters in that mission.. If you destroy one (or more), you'll get a "well done, pilot" comment and a warm handshake. The rest of the game isn't affected by your performance in the mission.

Thanks, man. That's a shame that's all you get.. it's no mean feat taking down one of those slippery SOBs without targetting if you ask me. Especially given the whole of Terran fleet know jack about them.

Well, if you're using the FSPort, there's that whole "Target my Targets Target" trick... :nervous:

*strokes chin*

I have no citation and only a faint "I think" feeling, but didn't the SCP cripple that feature at some point?

Just tried that mission now, Target Target's Target doesn't work any more. Almost certain it did in FS1 and FS2 though.
-
Huh. Okay, well, scratch that idea then.
I always found the Shaitan bombers easier to kill than the Scorpions, though. More health, but not as nimble.

No, if you destroy a fighter AND in the next mission keep the Galatea's hull above 50 you get the Distinguished Flying Cross.
You have to destroy the fighter in the mission before though, Admiral Shima commends you for doing both that and saving the Galatea when she awards you the medal

Oh, right.

You can also use the disrupter with the ML-16 because the disrupter is more effective against shields.
-
Maybe I was really lucky, but I emptied full banks of MXs into one of them, and it died.
I was quite surprised that enough missiles hit it actually, so it was probably a one time thing.
-
You probably got it with its
pants shields down, cause MX-50 do zilch against shields.

Update and confirmation: Have managed to kill an SD Scorpion with the Fury missiles in the "Out of the Dark, Into The Night" (yes, I got the name wrong in the thread title, sue me) and then, by keeping the Galatea's shields above 50 in "Paving the Way" got a Distinguished Cross medal.

I reported it as a bug...
(Sorry!)
