Title: How Many Countries Have You Been To?
Post by: Pred the Penguin on February 09, 2011, 07:55:07 am
I'm a little curious how much people get around.
Personally I've been to 11 countries across Europe and Asia, but curiously I've only been south of the equator once.
Right now I'm in South Korea.

Uhh... lots, mostly in Europe. Lets see...

Denmark (home sweet home)
Sweden
Norway
Greenland
England
Scotland
Germany
Poland
The Czech Republic
France
Belgium
Switzerland
Italy
Greece
Spain
Portugal
Turkey
The United States
Canada

All northern hemisphere, but I'll manage to get south of the big dotted line eventually. If nothing else, I'll definitely be visiting Australia and New Zealand at some point, and I'd like to do a grand tour of south america as well some time. Never been to Asia, unless you count Turkey. Want to visit China and Japan though, and maybe a few of the other stable countries in the region like Vietnam or South Korea (NOT near the north, though. I'm allergic to artillery fire), but those are not a huge priority for me.

This, except we stayed at Niagara Falls for a few days.  I'm not much of a ramblin' man.

born in the US, been to a few Caribbean islands briefly... haven't been to Hawaii or Alaska

I don't even have a passport. :(

I'm gonna do study abroad as soon as I finish all the classes for which I have to take special sections, though.

Beyond my homeland of the USA, just Mexico. Got a really nice Chinese Checkers board there for an excellent price.

Planning on visiting more in the future, though.

hmm...

Finland
Sweden
Estonia
Germany (airplane change on Frankfurt AM en route to Firenze, Italy)
Italy
Greece (Crete to be specific)
Canada
USA (when I was almost two years old, we were on a visit to Canada and went on a tour of Niagara falls and technically spent some time on US side of the border, but I don't know if this counts).
Possibly Netherlands, on the same trip when I was very young - I don't know the details of the travel and don't know if this would count anyway.

Canada, US, Dominican Republic.  My wife is from the UK originally, so she's been across virtually all of Western Europe.

I really do envy you Europeans for your travel opportunities.  With the exception of Canada-US-Mexico, travel by North Americans costs a bloody fortune because you're inevitably headed to another continent.

Hell - sometimes I can fly to the UK cheaper than I can to the other side of Canada.

That said, we're planning on a European trip sometime in the next couple years.

Should I mention how much I have paid for my travels? Probably not  :drevil:

How come US travelling is so expensive when the airline companies have been there for the longest?

Because we have to fly a long, long way no matter where we go..

Greece (Crete to be specific)
That's where my dad was born. :)

Anyway, I've never been out of the US, hell, I've only been to about four states. My dad was supposed to take me to Greece a while back but then he lost his job and the Greek riots started happening.

I have to take a 10 hour flight just to get to California from where I live.

Thinking back, I've been to quite a few, but most of them were when I was much younger, to the extent that I barely remember them save for from family video clips. Much less mobile now.

Blighty (lived and studied here for most of me life)
South Korea (lived here for 4 years)
Singapore (family lives here, I still go back occasionally)
New Zealand
Australia
Hong Kong, SAR
Vietnam (when I was very young)
Spain (Barcelona, again when I was really young)
Malaysia (did an internship here last year)
Indonesia
France (Paris, Nice (which wasn't), numerous skiing resorts)
Switzerland (relatively recently, actually)
Los Estados Unidos (Cali. Weirdly, I actually thought I'd never set foot in this country, but it turns out I had, when I was really little)
Canada

oh, and Iceland too, for 4 days of an ill-fated school trip

Yeah; unfortunately, we don't have the option on hopping on a train and cruising through several countries.  In fact, even our own national rail service is woefully inadequate. :p

Depending on the country, travelling by rail in Europe isn't that fun either.

Japan (birthplace)
U.S.
Canada (used to be able to see it from my front porch)
Canary Islands (does this count?)
Mexico (hardly even counts, considering how little time I've spent in it).

I have been to 30 or states (in the U.S., obviously), and most of them are as far apart or further apart than most countries in Europe, so I was tempted to count them, but ultimately had to click 1-5.

We're doing lists now too. OK:

Vietnam
Singapore (briefly - airport to the raffles for a Singapore Sling then more or less straight back on the plane)
And, of course, Australia. Should be noted though, I can, and frequently do, travel over a thousand kms in any direction from where I am now and still be in the same state, let alone changing nations (well, maybe not into the ocean).

Revisit this thread in 6 months though, and it'll be a different story. Tickets booked for a couple of nights in Malaysia and about 6 weeks in the US, then popping across to Europe via Iceland. Hoping to do some work.in Canada as well before I  come home, six months or so to fund further travels.

Well, the only country I've really travelled to is the UK (England, specifically, since I have a lot of family there) multiple times (five, at the moment). Although since I live in Australia, I've been to quite a few places along the way:
Singapore (with Singapore Airlines, and I think when we went with KLM, too);
Brunei and UAE (with Royal Brunei - Dubai airport (on the way) looked great, but Abu Dhabi (on the way back) was terrible);
Japan (with JAL - we had to stay the night on the way to London, so it's the only other country I've been in where I haven't just stayed in the airport);
The Netherlands (with KLM);
Hong Kong (with Cathay Pacifc).

Depending on the country, travelling by rail in Europe isn't that fun either.
It's not that it 'isn't much fun' in the US so much as it is there's almost no passenger trains being used anymore. I, for one, see many freight trains where I live. But I have never seen a passenger train that wasn't on display in some sort of museum in real life before. You'd generally be hard pressed to find a passenger train in the US, which means you have to go to places via plane or car, both which are not always ideal for separate reasons.

Gosh, I feel sorry for you poor buggers who've been to New Zealand. :D

Anyway,

France
Spain
Portugal
Greece
Tenerife (Technically part of Spain maybe, can't remember)
Scotland (given the way they constantly complain about not being the same country as England it should count!)

Eygpt
Angola

USA

Pakistan
India (for about 5 minutes! We took a short trip to the border with Pakistan)
China
Philippines
UAE (Didn't leave the airport but considering it was 40 degrees at 3am that's probably for the best).
