So I decided to go through WiH on insane once, just to see how I did. Predictably I died quite a lot, and then I progressed to the second part of the campaign, got the Kentauroi. . . and died even more.
It seems the Kentauroi is nearly the size of the Myrmidon. . . it is faster than the Uhlan, but it has virtually the same maneuverability (sans the reverse thrust) and only has one more gun. It's definitely more of an interceptor I suppose. So I switched back to the Uhlan whenever it was available, and loaded it out with the Rapier and Darts, and started to more or less dominate every other fighter. It takes more time to engage now, however.
Anyone else have an affinity for the Uhlan over the Kent, at all? Particularly in the survivability department?
-
You just don't know how to fly the Kent. :mad2:
-
Although the kent has it's advantages in a straight dogfight most of the time I'd prefer a Uhlan, especially if it's low number-high-skill opponents :P
-
The Kent is LESS maneuverable. It is considerably faster, but it has slower acceleration unless you're on afterburn. It does have reverse thrust, maybe that makes up for it.

Maybe this is stemming from the fact that I tend to play on Medium, but the Kent always felt like a faster Uhlan to me. I never noticed myself being hit more, and they seemed to have comparable maneuverability. I made a lot of use of the reverse thrust too. In fact, I got really attached to it, and while I love the Uriel and the whole concept behind it, when the time came to switch I found I missed the Kent quite a bit. I really should try to run Delenda Est with one later.
-
The Kent is faster.
-
Uhlan is space superiority, Kentauroi is interceptor. End of topic.
-
I meant that the Kent didn't appear to have any disadvantages associated with it's increase in speed, Mars. As in it felt exactly like a faster Uhlan to me.
-
Slower turning and Myrmidon sized target profile would be the disadvantages.
Play my gaunlet and you'll notice how hard it is to kill the Uhlans sometimes
-
Yep. I stand corrected. The Kent is hell of lot easier to peg than the Uhlan, even with the added speed. Thats what I get for only playing campaigns, and never going online.
-
Sure, but the Kent's reverse thrust is a big edge online (to the point where it got nerfed pretty hard.)

Wait, you're saying the Uhlan has more survivability than the Kent?
-
The difference in hull and shield is not large. The Uhlan has 10 more hitpoints and 25 fewer shields. One of the smallest differences in overall hitpoints I'm aware of in any mod.

Now that size difference is much more significant. For comparison, the Uhlan is about the size of the Pegasus, and the Kentauroi is about the size of the Myrmidon. This has a huge impact when avoiding missiles, while in front of someone's primaries, and perhaps most of all while in range of flak or pulse fire
Also, I simply must learn how to use this reverse thrust correctly. . . any good videos demonstrating its use?
-
I tend to use it when I'm being tailed. Thanks to the Kent's Maneuverability you're only showing your side to the attacker for a second or so. Then you can bring your Rapiers to bear and bring down pretty much anything short of a Nyx in seconds. Beyond that, I also use it for bomb interception when I'm screwing around, and as a quick "get the hell out of the blast zone" measure. But I am by no means some sort of ace pilot so I'm sure there are far better uses for it.
-
But the thing is, the Uhlan is more maneuverable than the Kent and much smaller, so it has much less of a problem with that.
-
The Kent can reverse AB, can't it?
Doesn't that mean it can do snap turns?
-
Eh, aside from the surprise factor, I think that it'd be ultimately harmful to the pilot. It slows you down, keeps you in the enemy's sights longer if they're farther away than 200 meters or so, and the maneuverability isn't changed in reverse, so you're turning at the same rate. The only difference in that respect is that you're on a tighter trajectory as opposed to the loop you'd go on with regular ABs.
Not saying the reverse AB isn't useful, just that snap turns are a little... eh. I suppose if you're one of those stupid turn-fights, you could reverse AB and break it, but I'm not sure if that's what you meant.
-
Simply resorting to the table files doesn't tell you as much as you'd think. MoI and a few other factors also factor into the maneuverability equation, and even if they had the exact same turn rates in the tables, the Kent's turns will still be wider because it's faster. The same thing happens when you compare the Manticore and the Astaroth.
