Title: [Solved?] FSO installer help please
Post by: Berek on February 16, 2011, 06:51:00 am
Hi

First of all I'd like to thank everyone who anything to do with this. I've only just bought FS2 from GOG and installed FSO, but the amount of work put in looks immense.

First time user here, so I'm sorry if my questions are something I should have figured out myself.
I did some searches in the forum, but didnt' find an answer to at least one of my two installer issues.

First issue when the install started downloading was the following popup in the java installer:

"A config file could not be downloaded.

As it tells me to do, I continue the install, and try run the installer the next day to update but the same thing happens.
If I go to the freespace2/installer/ folder I see a file called fsport.txt , but it's empty.
The message does not appear in the installer notes.
Not knowing much about the mods (yesterday was the 1st time I found fsopen)....is fsport one of the mods, and should i maybe also be seeing a folder with the same name???.....sorry I'm such a nub at this.

Second issue is the install cam up with the following message for the OS executables:

Post-Installation Notes for FreeSpace Open 3.6.12 Windows Executables
You'll need OpenAL to play the game.
You can get OpenAL here:
http://connect.creativelabs.com/openal/Downloads/Forms/AllItems.aspx

Now is this an automated 1st install message perhaps, as it didn't appear on a later update install log.
Just before installing fsopen, I did download and install oalinst.exe from the linked site....was this the correct file to install, and was it ok to run it from desktop?

Only other issues were two mods that didn't download (Shivan and Twilight), but a search of this forum got me the answer for that.
Also got some tiny freezes/pauses during the training mission, but will first play a bit more to try to determine exactly when that happens before asking about that.

Thanks in advance.

Heh, I just noticed if I click on the now valid link that I actually get to see the text file.
So I could possible save it and put it in the installer folder, which would bring me to the 2nd part of the question...is it part of a bigger download?

By the way, even though I can click on the fsport.txt as a link, the installer still has the same error.

FSPort is a mod, yes. It ports the FS1 ships, missions and such into FS2/FSO. In short, FSPort allows you to play the original FS1 campaign with FSO and all the goodies FSO provides. You can find it here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,70941.0.html), along with instructions for manual installation. Follow the FS2_Open part of the installation instructions.

I'm not fully aware of the inner workings of the Installer, but at least at some point it should promote OpenAL. It is a 3D audio API which FSO needs for producing sound. You now have it installed and do not have to worry about it anymore.

Also got some tiny freezes/pauses during the training mission, but will first play a bit more to try to determine exactly when that happens before asking about that.
Doesn't sound exactly normal. Might be related to your hardware capabilities. Do let us know if it continues and becomes a nuisance.

thanks for the quick reply :)

I just got off a 5 year WoW stint and realised they kinda stopped space combat sims.
I miss my Elite/Wing Commander days but now really look forward to trying the Babylon 5 mod soon.

Thanks everyone for putting this valuable information in here. I too just finished playing Wing Commander Prophecy (never could get around to it until recently). The Wing Commander site was great for getting help with OpenGL support. Direct3D just sucks when you've got an updated version of DirectX that isn't backwards compatible to the older versions (I'm running Win 7 64). All the old games in original format seem so grainy.

Anyways, my quest was to play my other games that I had (Tachyon, FreeSpace, and a bundled portion of FreeSpace 2:Colossus). I loaded the initial versions, but once again found that is was unplayable in its current condition. Then I found this site.

I went ahead and purchased the full version of FreeSpace 2 from GOG, installed OpenAL, then attempted to utilize the installer. After selecting The Works and clicking next, I received the same error stating that the config file could not be downloaded, but continued the installation anyways. The next screen gave me a blank screen (the one that states 'You can modify your installation here, or continue without modification.'). I simply clicked next and installation proceeded.
It appears that everything installed fine except some mirrors could not be contacted and the same files were not downloaded.

Since I had a hard copy of Freespace, I wanted to play it first. The instructions state to change the Mod to fsport-mediavps, however, no such directory exists. After going back and looking over some of the screen shots, it appears that you have to have fsport already installed. Is this correct? It appears that the installer did not 'install' this requirement.

I started downloading fsport 3.1.1 (didn't actually install yet), but it appears that 3.2 is now available.
I will now download 3.2 in order to see if this resolves this problem.

Once again, thanks for your help!

Until one of the experts replies I'll compare it to what I installed.

Did you install the orginal game to the default location on the c drive, or redirect to another drive letter or folder?.....if so, did you also redirect the installer to the same folder?
Maybe do a search for MediaVPs_3612 to see where it is.

As far as I can see fsport didn't install for me either, but I can still play the enhanced Freespace 2 campaign.

On a side note I wish GOG would sell Wing Commander 3/4/Prophecy, all nicely setup for Vista/7...these were the games that vindicated relocating my Amigas to the attic.
