Title: Playing in chase plane view?
Post by: Mars on February 23, 2011, 02:19:22 pm
Has anyone successfully pulled this off? I find that the reticle does not center properly at all, but it's sometimes nice graphically to fly in third person.

I use it to eliminate the Maxim's shudder effect. I guess you can get used to aiming if you practice.

It works ok when the target is not close to your ship, when it's in less than 200 meters you'll have to aim a tad little higher IIRC.

If I am playing casually it's not too difficult to compensate for in a dogfight. I wouldn't recommend it for any serious firefight, though.

The only time I've ever found it even remotely useful is in  the Blade  Itself,  and even then I prefer the Bridge View.

Is there any way of "winning" that mission?

It's also literally impossible in Insane, unless by chance.

What do you mean by winning? If you mean
Spoiler:
saving the Altan Orde, destroying the station and driving off the Tevs
, yes.

QuantumDelta's done it.

I think the SoL team has created a script that makes several boxes appear to show the vector your ship is firing down in chase view just like in the classic Starfox games, though I've only seen it in their trailers when their custom rail mode is in use (which is also pretty sweet).  I can't imagine chase view being very enjoyable without something like that, and possibly not without complementary adjustments to how the camera follows the ship.

I've achieved "The most favorable outcome" but only on hard. Oddly, I find that mission easier than most of the Fighter based missions in WiH, yet I see a ton of complaints about it's difficulty.

I can't get my turrets to stop firing at the Diomedes and transports, so I'll invariably destroy something before the other frigate can jump.

On insane, the first few waves of bombers seem to have an absurdly easy time getting through your point defenses, fighter escort, and the other frigate is destroyed by the Deimos corvettes by the time you can engage them. It's similar to Collateral Damage in which the Akula is often destroyed by the Cardinal and Regensberg before the Ranvir begins to fire on Insane.

I think I tried that mission once, had no freakin' clue how everything worked, and quit in short order.  I apparently require a large degree of hand-holding and tutorial-ness before taking on complex tasks. :p

My wild guess is that you just didn't read the command brief :P

I did, but there's no way I was going to retain all that stuff during the mission proper.  I need an in-game tutorial with control pop-ups, dammit! :p

I think to warrant a tutorial there would need to be a whole campaign of capital ship flying, and that would be enough to cause me to shoot myself.

ALTOUGH:
It would be rather fun to fly a Bellerophon or Chimera I think, if only so that you can hit the fire button and watch things disappear. A Sanctus mission would just be sad, and a Deimos mission would make one truly hate slash beams. What would be kind of cool would be the ability to make those Piranhas on the Deimos fire more like secondaries - hit space and fire them.

I remember a mission where the player took control of a Fenris.

I remember it came in a member's "useless stuff". I can't remember the name of who did it, though I can remember it included a four-mission campaign called "Bomber Command", which was set during Operation Thresher.

There's a giant menu right in the middle of the screen!

Hell if I know what those words mean!  I'm not some magical ship-wizard!  Now where did I put my cane and prune juice?  Blasted kids, with their rap music and flyable capital ships...

You need to set you weapons to fire on only what you're targeting...

This. Use the arrow keys to cycle through your different weapons batteries, and tell them to lock on your current target. That will prevent them from firing on anything else, like, for instance, the Diomedes and it's charges.

And I want  a capship campaign. I have no idea how hard it would be to FRED, but FS2 has proven it can do fun capship missions with enough work, and there are nowhere near enough awesome Capital Ship command games.
