Title: Does no-one maek missions anymore?
Post by: Petrarch of the VBB on May 08, 2002, 01:29:04 pm
It occured to me the other day, does anyone actually use FRED and make missions any more, or is everyone a MODder? I know people use FRED to make missions for the major project mods, but doesn't anyone make stanalone missions anymore?

Yeah, people make missions, but mostly for campaigns. Campaigns don't come out all that often, so you don't see it all the time, like you do mods.

Well, if you think of it, it's kinda pointless, it's kinda like a one-night stand:D (sorry, was the first thing that came to mind :D) rather than  a full-time relationship (campaign).
It brings pleasure, but only for a moment.

I have a few single missions in various states of (dis)repair on my HD. May even release them someday.

And yes, I'm making a ton of missions for BWO...so I still use FRED2. It's open right now infact.

Funny you mentioned that, Petrarch.....
I've been in the process of making multi-missions for FS1. (Ever heard of the Cold Storm and the FS1 Playground? Thank you..... ;7)

Hmm.... dunno why missions have dried up.  I guess that more people are interested in releasing mods on their own than missions.

Other then missions to test stuff (like the Raynor) the last missions I've really worked on were for the Robotech MOD but aren't actually part of it. I had worked on some regular FS2 missions, but that was a long time ago and I never got around to finishing them. (Got into D3 mission building. ;) )

I am in FRED2 right now actually; I spend a few hours each day on my campaign missions. I think it should be finished by early June or so.

The few missions being made might be because HLP's focus is mainly towards renders. The support for FS missions is a bit lacking (No offense, of course :o)

If I could just get PXO to validate my missions......

:doubt: :mad2:

Does anyone know how to do that?

Basically you are just in the wrong forum, Petrarch.  HLP is modding oriented, so naturally there are lots of mods here.  YOu might want to check out FreespaceWatch and/or FredZone for more mission-oriented stuff.

I never found myself able to bring enough context into a single mission.  IT was just too flat.

I have three missions (no person sounds, but otherwise o.k.).

In one you fly Pegasus fighters in the nebula while the Sathanas fights with your defense line(right after the knossos destruction), and you find.... guess

The second, that doesn't work for some strange reason, is a mission in which you (S.O.C.)have to secure the second portal for 10 minutes and pick up s.o.c. Alpha - who went in it for 15 minutes. It's kinda fun to see yourself flying in that mara right by you.

The third is an escort of an science vessel to a installation. And the Shivans want both the instalation and the s.v. destroyed... badly. TONS of fighters, cruisers, corvettes and destroyers join the fight! FUN.

You`re on the wrong board for that one. You need Fredzone. They handle multiplayer.

Once I am finished with my campaign, I will probably work some single missions; I have a few ideas for those. ;)

I have 2 more campaigns to do after BWO... :jaw: - but I may release the missions from one of them as single missions in a chain...

I don`t blame you for missing Fredzone. Most people do. Pity, cause it's a good site :)

Well it's true that HLPs main focus is modding and renders, not missions. However VW has a huge stock-pile of mission files. Most of our missions are in campaigns (and I might be way off the mark here but I think that's getting more and more the case). It's easier and more effective to tell a story over 5 missions than 1.
