Hey all,
I downloaded Wings 3D and began messing with it and well, one thing lead to another and BAM! I got something worth showing for once! :D
I figured the best I can do is start making Missiles and well this is the first one. I LOVE the Treb....it's....just UGLY for what it does and this is my version of a replacement. I'd like to call it the Broadsword just because I wanna. :P
This thing is in PIECES and I did this on my fist day working Wings 3D. I'll need to center the fins which are eyeballed. Then I need to join the parts if I'm supposed too. Once done I need to make the pointed tip ONE point. It's 16 points together and working on it to be ONE point. (any WINGS 3d guys out there can give me some pointers I'd be happy!)
I also want to curve the warhead and somehow I'll figure that one out too. :D
Comments and all that crap is welcome

Select the lone vertex at the utmost front part of the mesh. Right click. Left click on Bevel. Better results.

Is than an ingame model or a tech model? It seems kinda toohigh poly for ingame, but too low for tech.

Cool. I didn't know anyone else here used Wings 3D, seeing how it's never mentioned and all.
Then again, I've only poked my head into the forums every now and then, and for a short time at that, so I really have no idea.

This is an exercise in working with Wings 3D for one. I doubted this would even make it into the game as it is(currently) and I still have lots to learn on this. UV Mapping? Seems there is something in there that lets you do it, but I have no idea how the process goes.
Yeah I'm sure the poly count would be high as it stands, but you gotta start somewhere :)
Cant remember, but does the Blue Planet team use this? I seem to recall this idea to use Wings 3D came from one of their threads.
I actually prefer Maya...but currently do not have a copy yet.

Use Edge Mode (hotkey E) to select a continuous edge longitudinally along the model; do not make the edge loop closed. Right click and select "Hard". Hit the hotkey B and left click on the mesh to select the whole mesh. Enter Face Mode (hotkey F) and right click on all selected faces and right click on UV Mapping. A new window will pop up showing the entire model. Right click on the new window (anywhere) and select "Unfold". The UV map editor should pop up, and the missile should be unfolded like a cloth. Adjust the UV coordinates if necessary. When done, right click on the UV space w/ nothing selected and select "Create Texture". Then close out of the UVmap editor and under the Outliner box (use the menu to find it) find the UV map bitmap and right click on the name. Click on "Make External..." (not "Export...") and save it as a file. Use your favorite graphics editor to edit the UV map.

Looks nice, will be interested in seeing this finished as well as future (more refined) versions.

If it's too big to be an ingame fighter missile, you can scale it up and call it an artillery rocket or something. I'd use it.

Hi Guys,
This will be an in game missile and also be available for ship defense too as a long range anti-fighter anti-bomber missile. Combat range has been increased to 4200 meters (I think) for the time being as I want to test this range for it's effectiveness in game play. Explosive power also has increased but not by much. Also another Missile to replace the Harpoon is on the way too. This one called the Rapier Missile will be twice as agile and also faster. Range has slightly increased to 2000 meters, again will test for it's effectiveness in game play. Stay tuned! :)

Or you could even put those front winglets on the head of the missile. That way it can look like a two-tact missile, maybe a next-gen trebuchet which with additional trust can reach even greater lenghts.

OK...got another one to show. This is the Rapier mentioned earlier.

And also further work done on the Broadsword.

Yes both appear to be alike, but the Broadsword is a much bigger missile.
