I am contemplating making a FreeSpace 2 Card Game. I recently just got back into FreeSpace 2, and am making a FreeSpace 2 Version of the table top game Heroscape.
I'd be interested in knowing what your ideas are for such a card game? I will be posting my new ideas and progress here (or is there a better place on the forum?)
Idea #1
Ships and Weaponry in the deck randomly. Ships would have symbols that allow weapons with the same symbol to be played.
(Ship layout like Cold War Naval Battles)
Idea #2
Ships in play, and weaponry in the deck randomly. " " same as above.
(Similar to Marvel: Overpower)

You might want to check out http://fscg.hard-light.net/

Seen it. It looks very good, but I was thinking more of a strictly fighting game.

Pity FreeSpace doesn't really lend itself to doing something like;
Pilots
Ships
Systems
It'd give you a lot of leeway for a card game, I suppose you could probably do weapons instead of pilots but it feels a bit meh.
If you wanted to do it top trumps styli you'd only need to use ships.

You could do pilots, they'd just be faceless with ranks and/or skill for names.

snipes, zinny and xero could be "hero" pilots with heightened stats. you could also mix in squadrons for variety, for example a lieutenant in the 90th would be better than a lieutenant in the 107th

Perhaps at piloting different craft and using different weapons, but not just in general. :P

What I was thinking...
We could play point battles. Lets just pick a random number, 300. Maybe Squads are worth 40 - 70 points, Capital Ships worth 80-240 points.
Ships would start in play in two rows. Range would be limited to short or long. Short can fire into the next row, and Long can fire in the next two rows
ROW 1 PLAYER 1
ROW 2 PLAYER 1
ROW 3 PLAYER 2 If my short range ship was here, I could hit ROW 2.
ROW 4 PLAYER 2 If my long range ship was here, I could hit ROW 1.
If my long range ship was in row 3 I could hit both of the opponites rows.
Each Squad (Fighters...) and Capital Ship would come with a certain number of specific attack cards, these would be combined with a standard deck to create the players full deck. These attack cards when used by their host ship would do more damage (or maybe higher chance of hitting?) but could be used by any ship with the same Type and Tier as the attack cards.
What I was thinking was...
Attack or Weapon Types
Ballistic I / II
Missle I / II like dumbfires and homing.
Energy (beam/laser?) I / II
In addition to weapons, Ships will have defencive cards too. Fighters will have countermeasures of course and all ships will have evasive manuevers, ...etc.
What you think?

Well, somebody -did- make printable collectors cards for FreeSpace.
Expanding on that into a more fully fledged game (or alternative) wouldn't hurt any.
-
I think having ships with base hull/shield/speed/energy stats would be good, and then weapons (primary/secondary) having attack vs hull/shield and energy drain. If your weapons go over the energy available, you get a negative modifier. the weapons would be attached to the fighter wings.

this is getting awfully close to battletech :nervous:

This reminds me of that FreeSpace conversion of B5 Wars. I've found some data sheets for several ships and some other related articles on this site (check the links which include the word 'Freespace'): http://planetside.firenebula.com/greatmachine/ (http://planetside.firenebula.com/greatmachine/).
I know it's not related to your particular game system but I thought that it might be of interest to any B5 Wars gamers (if any) that read this thread.

I have not played B5 wars, but that sounds interesting. I'll take a look.

Here's a link to the creator's website: http://knossos.firenebula.com/ (http://knossos.firenebula.com/) (I should have been more specific earlier and said that B5 Wars is dice-based and involves miniatures).

I was actually thinking about creating freespace conversion for Race for the Galaxy. I even got the modification to the system and templates drawn, but i am in last year of school and have no time to work on it :-/
