Title: Orions in ST: Reborn
Post by: Logrus on March 03, 2011, 07:19:20 am
For me the Orion-class destroyers in Silent Threat Reborn are shown in a form of old low-poly models. This is seen in both field and techroom. However in techroom the "generic" Orion is an up-to-date model, while all the "named" ones are low-poly.
So, is this normal, or is it some kind of bug?

It's because ST:R is retail compatible. In order to get nameplates onto their ships, they've made custom pof files, rather than using texture replacement (which is an FSO feature), and since they need to make those custom pofs work in retail, they've used the retail (i.e. low poly) Orion. The tech room model doesn't have a nameplate, however, so the game displays the one from the mediaVPs.

Close. More accurately, we want to use table based texture replace but it isn't working yet.

Isn't there by any chance a patch available?

If there was a patch, it would surely be available.

Oh well...
Thanks for clarifications!

I suppose that one way to get around this would be to extract the missions and use the regular Orion model for each instance and use in-mission texture replacement... or are there changes that I'm not aware of between the variants?

TBH, I'm not sure why we don't do that... It gets complicated because retail compatibility requires separate models though...

If I'm understanding this correctly, it should just require the missions with the altered models be placed in the missions folder.  If you're using retail, you just don't install the altered missions.

OR one could replace the named Orion .pof entires wiht the generic one.

Hell of a lot easier to edit 3-4 entires (one line change) in one table than a dozen missions,

We want to distribute a single mod that's both FSO-enhanced and retail-compatible.  That wouldn't be achieved with a mission swap.  And retail compatibility demands duplicate Orions.

The easiest way to get this fixed is for someone to step up to the plate and finish coding the ships.tbl texture replacement.  It's been "nearly done" for ages now.  I'd do it, but I keep getting more tasks piled on my to-do list as fast as I finish them.

perhaps I should offer a reward for whoever finishes that code...

That's a good idea. :D

Won't be monetary... the only other thing I can offer is either use of my skills or early access to my projects...

Might seem like a bit of a bump, but I did make some HTL nameplated versions, for my own gratification and until the table based replacements work.

I'll attach them to this post. Unpack the archive into your FSPort-MediaVPs data folder.

There are already nameplates in the FSPort-MediaVPs we just released.
